Kuskop to build more Tamu Desa premises in Sabah, Sarawak

Published on: Monday, June 02, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 02, 2025 Text Size: KOTA BELUD: The Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Ministry (Kuskop) will build more Tamu Desa (rural market) premises in Sabah and Sarawak this year under a RM20 million allocation to empower rural traders and boost infrastructure. Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick ( pic ) said the allocation includes an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the Madani Rakyat programme in Tawau last month. He said the government successfully built or upgraded 98 Tamu Desa premises across the two states last year and hopes to match or exceed that number this year with the new funding. Ewon noted that 14 of the completed Tamu Desa facilities were in Kota Belud and highlighted their impact on small-scale traders, especially women, by providing comfortable trading spaces that double as venues for community activities. As of May this year, requests to build or upgrade such premises in Sabah alone total RM40 million, and Ewon said the initiative will continue into the 13th Malaysia Plan as part of the government's commitment to rural development and inclusive growth. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Youth and Sports Ministry revives Rakan Muda initiative to empower Malaysia's youth with modern activities, tech focus

JOHOR BAHRU, May 25 — The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) is set to revitalise the Rakan Muda initiative, first introduced in 1994, with the aim of nurturing a new generation of youth equipped with the knowledge and skills aligned with their individual passions and interests. Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) Management Services Division undersecretary Richard Barahim said that plans to actively revive the Rakan Muda programme across its 10 existing focus areas were initiated in 2023, but the ministry is now intensifying efforts to implement them fully this year. 'The idea had already been conceived, but there was no suitable platform for its execution, until we identified the Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR), which proved to be a fitting avenue, especially with the increased involvement of youths,' he said. 'The implementation of PMR, organised by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) through the Performance Acceleration Coordination Unit (PACU), is considered comprehensive. In addition to attracting youth participation, it also brings together various ministries and government agencies,' he told reporters at the Johor PMR 2025 at Toppen Shopping Centre here today. He added that KBS also plans to modernise the Rakan Muda by incorporating activities that align with current trends and technological advancements to ensure it remains relevant to today's youth. 'At KBS, we want to assure the public, especially youths, that Rakan Muda is still active and very much alive. We are committed to keeping it relevant by introducing activities that reflect current interests and technological developments. 'The Rakan Muda programme encompasses a variety of focus areas, including self-reliance, environmental appreciation, entrepreneurial spirit, fitness, arts and culture, innovation, volunteerism, rural development, and community engagement,' he said. This edition of the PMR, led by the KBS, offers a diverse lineup of activities aimed at empowering youth and graduates, including career opportunity showcases, talent discovery programmes, and eSports competitions. Notably, this edition of the PMR coincides with the state-level National Youth Day celebration today, further amplifying the voices and potential of youth. — Bernama

Riding the semiconductor surge

Making it official: Anwar signing a commemorative plaque during the launch of a Madani Rakyat youth event in Johor Baru. — Bernama PM: Youth must be at forefront as tech giants ramp up investments JOHOR BARU: Youth must fully seize opportunities arising from the rapid growth of the semiconductor industry, which is now attracting the attention of major global corporations, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said Malaysia has emerged as a key semiconductor hub in the region, not only in the lower segments of the supply chain but also as a preferred destination for top-tier foreign investors. He pointed to the latest success in drawing investments from three corporate giants – Infineon in Kedah, Nvidia in Johor and MaiStorage in Cyberjaya. 'These are not lower- or back-end jobs being done here. This will help propel the country to be great in this region. 'Our young people must take full advantage of this momentum to benefit from these developments and help elevate Malaysia as a leading nation in the region,' he said when launching a Madani Rakyat youth event yesterday. Anwar said the nation's youths, particularly those involved in engineering, information technology, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), must capitalise on the positive momentum in the semiconductor industry. He revealed that Malaysia is among only five countries capable of producing chips developed by MaiStorage, a significant achievement shared with advanced economies such as the United States, China and Taiwan. 'This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of our young talent. Students pursuing engineering and TVET must continue working hard to enhance the nation's capabilities,' he said. The Prime Minister said the country would continue to prosper only when it remains stable, adding that disunity could weaken the country and progress could be undermined if divisions are allowed to fester. He urged the youth to stand united and reject any form of hatred and leaders who only want to enrich themselves. 'What is the meaning of development if we have traits like violence, greed and hatred for each other?' he asked. Anwar also said that nation-building efforts should not be limited to physical development alone, but must also focus on nurturing individuals who embody strong humanitarian values. He said the concept of Malaysia Madani calls upon the people, especially youths, to grasp the true meaning of human development, which encompasses noble traits such as compassion, moderation and mutual understanding among different races and religions. 'We want to develop individuals who possess certain elements, characteristics, values and capabilities. Youths must set a good example of how this nation can be united,' he added.

Anwar: Teamwork key to Sabah's progress

TAWAU: Requests for development allocations can be discussed amicably and harmoniously between the federal and state governments, rather than through hostility, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said it is normal for states to request allocations for development purposes. 'This is normal but not through hostility or condemnation. We negotiate and find good solutions, choose elected representatives who can voice our interests, not divide us. 'This is my message. If we love our country and love our state, we must strengthen our unity,' he said when closing the state-level Madani Rakyat programme yesterday, Bernama reported. The Prime Minister gave an assurance that efforts will not be spared to realise Sabah's potential to become a developed state. He said this could be achieved through close cooperation between the federal and state governments, particularly in championing the people's welfare. Anwar also rebuked leaders who had held high-ranking positions, including in Parliament, but often spoke of developing Sabah through confrontation with the peninsula or the Federal Government. 'The peninsula will not progress, Sarawak will not progress, Sabah will not progress if we do not unite and work together to uplift this nation. We must truly understand this. 'Look at other countries, every day there is news of division between races, between regions, between religions. Why? Because leaders incite division,' he said. The Prime Minister said those currently in power must do their utmost to safeguard the people's welfare and resolve their problems, rather than follow in the footsteps of leaders who only know how to condemn others after losing power. He said the people, especially in Sabah, were affected by many issues, including water and electricity supply, healthcare, roads and education facilities for their children. 'Which is why facilities such as schools, clinics and key projects like the Pan Borneo Highway must be completed for the benefit of the people and not be allowed to face unnecessary delays,' said Anwar. The Prime Minister said the government had implemented 144 development projects in Sabah to date, involving a total allocation of RM14bil. The projects include the upgrading of Tawau Hospital and Lahad Datu Prison, the construction of the Sepanggar Bay container port and the Sabah Heart Institute in Kota Kinabalu. 'We are doing what's best for the people, addressing issues such as electricity and energy costs, education for children, toilet upgrades, science labs and attending to the needs of police and armed forces personnel,' he said. 'We will continue to do our best to develop Sabah, from enhancing connectivity to AI, digital initiatives, and eradicating poverty.'

[UPDATED] Anwar: Power must serve the people, not politics

KOTA KINABALU: Those in positions of power must do everything within their means to improve the lives of the people and enhance public infrastructure, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "When in power, many leaders focus on their parliamentary seats, ministries, and positions in government, but fail to prioritise the needs of the people. It's only when they lose power that they start talking about defending Malays, about Islam being under threat, and about the neglect of the states. But when they had the power, what did they actually do?" "So I challenge my fellow leaders – while we are in power, let us do the best we can for the people," he said during the closing ceremony of the three-day Madani Rakyat programme at Dataran Majlis Perbandaran Tawau here, today. Anwar urged leaders and government officials to prioritise the everyday concerns of the people: electricity, water, schools (including school toilets, science labs, classrooms, and canteens), the welfare of the police and military who ensure safety, housing, basic needs, the repair of roads, and the maintenance of clinics and hospitals. He said that the daily news was often filled with racial division, territorial disputes, and religious conflict – much of it incited by political leaders. He added, "There are leaders in high-ranking positions, some responsible for parliamentary constituencies, who focus only on how to move Sabah forward by fighting against the Peninsula or the Federal Government. But neither the Peninsula, nor Sarawak, nor Sabah can progress if we do not unite and come together to uplift this country as one." "If we truly love our country and our respective states, we must work towards strengthening unity. Let us be grateful that we continue to live in peace despite our political differences." Anwar also pointed out that beyond the political quarrels, the nation faced challenges on the global stage, such as the tariffs imposed by the US. "The investment we recorded in 2024 was the highest in Malaysia's history. But now, we are facing tariffs from President Donald J. Trump. "We export a significant amount to the United States – 60 per cent of our semiconductors produced here are exported there. Our furniture exports alone amount to US$2 billion dollars a year. We need to build our strength. But how can we do that if we remain entangled in petty squabbles, with insults here and slander there?"
