Shraddha Kapoor reportedly in talks with Dinesh Vijan and Laxman Uttekar for new project
Following her recent visit to the Maddock office in Mumbai on May 26, Shraddha Kapoor is reportedly in advanced discussions with producer Dinesh Vijan for a potential reunion after the success of 'Stree 2'. Industry sources indicate that the actress met with Vijan, and their meeting also included director Laxman Uttekar, known for Chhaava. According to sources close to Pinkvilla, Shraddha Kapoor has expressed strong interest in a script discussed during the meeting and has "principally agreed" to come onboard. If the project materializes, it would mark Laxman Uttekar's next directorial venture after Chhaava, with Shraddha Kapoor potentially taking on the lead role. The film is reportedly based on a Marathi novel, and Shraddha is set to portray a Maharashtrian character on screen. Details beyond this are being kept under wraps, though there's a possibility of an A-list male lead joining the cast. While the talks are currently in nascent stages, the likelihood of this film moving forward is considered high, given Shraddha Kapoor's positive relationship with the production house. Dinesh Vijan, currently experiencing a highly successful run with two films in the ₹500 crore club, is focused on creating diverse and trend-breaking content. The subject pitched to Shraddha by Vijan and Uttekar is said to be deeply rooted in Maharashtrian culture, aligning with their vision for unique storytelling. In addition to this potential project with Shraddha Kapoor, Laxman Uttekar and Dinesh Vijan are also developing a three-hero project, which they aim to take to floors in 2026 or 2027 with three top-tier actors from Indian cinema. Maddock Films is also actively expanding its horror-comedy universe, with the next installment, Thama, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, scheduled for a Diwali 2025 release. For Shraddha Kapoor, this potential directorial venture with Laxman Uttekar could be her next big-screen project after Stree 2, particularly after her recent talks with Tumbbad director Anil Rahi Barve did not materialize. Before Bhediya 2, Varun Dhawan And Dinesh Vijan May Join Forces For Standalone Mytho-Horror
Last Updated: Varun Dhawan and Dinesh Vijan are reportedly collaborating on a new mytho-horror film with comedic elements before they begin work on Bhediya 2. Varun Dhawan and producer Dinesh Vijan are reportedly all set to reunite for an exciting new film—and it's not Bhediya 2. While the actor and producer have shared a successful track record with projects like Badlapur and Bhediya, their latest collaboration might be something completely fresh and unexpected. According to industry insiders, close to the entertainment portal PinkVilla, Varun is in advanced talks with Vijan's Maddock Films for a standalone mytho-horror comedy—a genre-blending entertainer laced with supernatural elements, rooted mythology, and generous doses of humour. 'Varun and Dinesh are definitely reuniting for Bhediya 2, but that film has seen a shift in its shooting schedule. In the meantime, they're seriously exploring another unique concept—a mytho-horror film with comedic undertones," reveals a source close to the development. Interestingly, the duo is also eyeing two more scripts, but this particular horror-comedy is currently leading the pack. 'This project won't be part of Maddock's existing horror comedy universe. It's not connected to Stree, Roohi, or Bhediya. It's an entirely new, standalone story," the source clarifies, adding that while discussions are ongoing, an official announcement might come by July. Casting for the female lead is still underway. Varun Dhawan, meanwhile, is juggling a packed schedule. He's currently shooting for Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by his father David Dhawan, followed by pending portions of Border 2, where he stars alongside Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty. He is also part of Anees Bazmee's No Entry 2, adding another comedy to his growing lineup. As a bonus treat for fans, Varun will make a special appearance as Bhediya in Maddock's upcoming horror-comedy Thama, which is slated for a Diwali 2025 release. Whether it's mythological scares or monster mayhem, Varun and Vijan's partnership continues to promise genre-bending fun with a commercial punch. First Published: May 24, 2025, 21:53 IST

Rajkummar Rao's Bhool Chuk Maaf may hit theatres amid OTT row—what it means for small-budget movies
Comedy drama Bhool Chuk Maaf starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi may finally hit the theatres this week ahead of debuting on video streaming or over-the-top (OTT) platforms. But the public spat between the low-budget movie's production house and India's largest multiplex chain may have dealt a blow to Indian small-scale films, fear industry experts. Maddock Films, which co-produced the movie along with Amazon MGM Studios, decided to pull it off from theatres a day before its scheduled release earlier this month. The production house said it would launch the movie on Amazon Prime Video instead because of 'heightened security drills across the nation" as India began retaliatory attacks on Pakistan under 'Operation Sindoor'. While this resulted in a legal spat with PVR Inox, industry experts fear Maddock's flipflop could deal a setback for similar small-budget movies, a category that has been struggling to draw audiences to the theatres. The standoff between Maddock and PVR Inox also coincides with an ongoing debate over the window between theatrical and OTT release of films. 'A situation like this is extremely detrimental to the theatrical business and sends a signal that the product is easily available on another medium and that the two platforms are interchangeable," said Rahul Puri, managing director at production house Mukta Arts and theatre chain Mukta A2 Cinemas. Puri also said that theatrical and OTT releases 'need to be seen as distinct in order to maximise revenue for cinemas. Even though (Bhool Chuk Maaf) isn't a film with a huge star cast, strong content will do well in theatres. More importantly, we need to ensure better consistency of people coming to cinemas". Also read | Back to basics: PVR Inox to tap into underserved regions of India with low-cost cinemas for growth Why small-budget films matter The trend of small-budget films being released directly on OTT platforms began during the covid years, when a clutch of titles such as Gulabo Sitabo and Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl streamed directly online. Theatres have been struggling with low footfalls, particularly for non-star, small-budget films since. Ashutosh Agarwal, owner of Star World Cinemas in Uttar Pradesh, said a film that doesn't boast of a high-profile cast or isn't part of an established franchise like Maddock's 2024 blockbuster Stree 2 may not usually manage great advance bookings at theatres. However, if filmmakers begin 'deciding whether to release a film in theatres based on advances, 50% of the movies may not arrive in cinemas", Agarwal said. The film industry is controlled by a close-knit group of distributors and exhibitors and operates on trust, and has seen enough instances of films doing well with positive word-of-mouth in the second or third week of release, he added. Sunny Deol-starrer Jaat and Akshay Kumar's Kesari Chapter 2 sailed through despite poor advance bookings, he said. Also read | Why star-powered movies have OTT handprints all over them Post the covid years, audiences have been flocking to theatres mostly for large spectacles such as Pathaan, RRR, and Kalki 2898 AD. Trade experts, however, said the content pipeline must keep flowing for theatres to survive and grow their business, especially since there can only be a few big-budget films in a year. While low-scale or modestly budgeted breakout hits have been few and far between, some like Stree 2 and Gadar 2 have managed to make a mark. 'Small films have been working at the box office, such as 12th Fail or The Kashmir Files," independent exhibitor Vishek Chauhan said. 'They have all offered an emotion or experience not seen before."

The Real Bhool Chuk is PVR Inox Taking on Maddock Films - A Studio That Champions Cinema
This is not just about law and order; this is about a huge cultural blasphemy. 'Bhool Chuk Maaf' hits theatres on May 23, which is when the decision was to be taken. Where most studios are going digital, Maddock Films remains standing for theatrical release. So what PVR Inox is attempting to do legally against Maddock Films for Bhool Chuk Maaf is much more than a mere matter of business. By not regarding Maddock as one of the few associates intent on keeping cinema alive on the big screen, the motion by PVR Inox may rub off on other studios, to the detriment of viewers who hate the idea of experience films in a theatre. Taking Maddock Films into court for its recent release *Bhool Chuk Maaf* was not an accusatory move, especially since the company has always stood for theatrical releases. The production house has, in fact, prieced the ₹2,500 crore mark in the past two years with films like Stree 2, Chhaava, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, and Munjya. Even post-pandemic, Maddock Films went out on a limb for theatres by releasing Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, a small-town film that surprisingly did well at the box office. The right attitude for a powerhouse of production cinema-favouring theatrical cinema for so long! The hold-up, then, is the symbolism of a defiant, the hard choice to embrace real-life priorities over profits. The nation from on high has greater issues, come down to a choice of being conscious, being responsible, and being grounded that happens to be in this moment. PVR had contended that Maddock Films violated the traditional *8-week window rule* which stipulated that a film must be allowed an exclusive theatrical run of at least 8 weeks before it is released on an OTT platform. While such norms may have made sense back then, when everything was so focused on the theatres and digital access was limited. Today, the very behavior of audiences has changed. It is clearer now that, especially during these uncertain times around the India-Pakistan conflict, many viewers want to stay safe and enjoy their choice at home. What one wishes to term an attempt to safeguard one's own interests at the cost of production houses attempting to make nimble and audience-centric decisions than adapting to the changing landscape. Theatres have always adjusted windowing timelines as per their convenience-and so the insistence of PVR Inox to stick to an outdated windowing model feels almost as if it were betraying its own interests. Especially with a studio like this, who has been a consistent contributor to the box office, this holds rigid norms more of an optical ego battle rather than genuine concern for industry standards. The decision therefore was clearly between anarchy and collaboration. PVR Inox chose to stick to archaic practices, making it the holdback for future progress within the industry.
