Police in metro-east looking for alleged thieves posing as Ameren employees

Law enforcement authorities in Madison County are warning residents to stay alert for a pair of alleged thieves disguising themselves as Ameren employees. According to a release from the sheriff's department, there have been a string of robberies involving their scheme. 'A female suspect makes contact with the victim and identifies herself as an Ameren employee needing to survey the backyard for limbs in need of trimming,' stated a release posted on social media. 'While the victim is distracted, a male suspect enters the home and steals valuables.' A separate release from the Madison County Sheriff's Department said both the suspects are white and that the female suspect speaks with a foreign accent while the male suspect is tall, thin, and has dark hair. They are driving either a gray, late model Jeep Compass or a white pickup truck with ladders and storage containers, the department said. Actual Ameren employees will be in uniform, have appropriate credentials, and will be driving a clearly identifiable utility vehicle, the release stated. They also won't be aggressive or impatient with customers. If there are doubts, Ameren can be reached by calling (800) 755-5000 to double check that Ameren employees are supposed to be working in the area. A spokesperson for Ameren was not immediately available. 'Please be vigilant and do not allow unknown people on your property or in your house,' the sheriff's release stated. St. Clair County hasn't received any reports of similar crimes, according to Major Darren Fults with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department.

Message of hate mowed into lot in Illinois village

ALHAMBRA, Ill. – Authorities in a Metro East community are investigating reports of a swastika appearing on a grassy lot. Residents in Alhambra, Illinois, a tiny village of under 700 people in Madison County, said in off-camera discussions that they don't want that kind of message or rhetoric coming of their town. A spokesperson for the Madison County Sheriff's Department said investigators had no information to give out at this time. FOX 2's DroneFOX was deployed over the area where residents said the hate symbol was mowed into the grass. The remnants of the symbol are faintly visible. 'We don't want to see this kind of hate in our town,' one Alhambra resident said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. New Castle couple charged with auto theft, forgery and perjury

ANDERSON — A New Castle couple have been charged with several felony counts for the alleged theft of a vehicle from a relative. Christopher Ryan Baker, 34, and Barbara Baker, age not available, were charged, following an investigation by the Madison County Sheriff's Department, on felony charges of fraud, auto theft, forgery and perjury and a misdemeanor charge of exploitation of a dependent adult. According to a probable cause affidavit, Scott and Todd Shaw reported the theft of a vehicle and lawn tractors Jan. 9. Court documents show the Shaws were granted guardianship of a relative residing at the Countryside Manor nursing home. Barbara Baker obtained a death certificate for the recently deceased David Baker, claiming to be a blood relative, according to the probable cause affidavit. But the Shaws told police that Baker was not a blood relative. Barbara Baker transferred the title to the Chevy Tahoe into her name last December, court records show. The listed price of the vehicle was $0. When police interviewed the woman at the nursing home, she said Barbara Baker didn't have permission to take the title to the Tahoe. On Feb. 7, officers found the Tahoe in New Castle, according to the charging probable cause. Christopher Baker presented a document that showed the woman signed over the Tahoe and two lawn tractors to him, the court document states. The signature on the document didn't match that of the woman at the nursing home, according to the affidavit.

Frankfort man charged in hit-and-run death of Elwood teen

ELWOOD — A Frankfort man has been charged in the Saturday night hit-and-run that killed an Elwood teen. Michael A. Carnes, 77, faces a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, a Level 4 felony. Darken Jeske, 16, was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood. Jeske was running at the time of the incident — just before midnight — at Ninth and Main streets, according to a Madison County Sheriff's Department media release. A 2017 Ram 1500 pickup driven Carnes struck Jeske but did not stop at the scene of the crash, police said. The Frankfort man was followed by a witness and later apprehended by police in Windfall, the sheriff's office reported. "Mr. Carnes spoke with investigators this morning and has been cooperative since the time of the crash," a Tuesday press release from the sheriff's department related. "It has been determined Mr. Carnes was aware he struck something on the night of the crash prior to leaving the scene." Jeske was a freshman at Tipton High School, where he was a member of the wrestling team. A post on the Elwood schools Facebook page noted that Jeske had attended Elwood schools. Jeremiah Nunemacher, head wrestling coach at Tipton High School, said he was heartbroken by the news of Jeske's death. 'He was always eager to learn,' Nunemacher said. 'He was always helpful, wanting to be in, always wanting to help out the other kids.

Two charged with sexual misconduct with minors

ANDERSON — Two area men have been arrested on charges involving sexual conduct with minors. The Madison County Sheriff's Department arrested James S. Duvall, 84, Noblesville, Monday on felony charges of child molesting and child solicitation. If convicted, Duvall faces a possible prison sentence of two to 12 years. According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Detective Brad Oster, Duvall was fondling a young girl in 2024. During a Kids Talk forensic interview the girl said Duvall would caress her buttocks and at least once tried to pull down her pants. She said another time, Duvall took her finger and placed in his mouth and sucked on it. Duvall also would reportedly press her breasts against his chest. He also attempted to have sexual relations with her. During an interview, Duvall denied the allegations. Deputies arrested Robert L. Short, 30, 4700 block of No Name Road on Monday on charges of providing obscene material to minors, obscene performance violations and neglect of a dependent. According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Detective Caitlin Morency, a young girl said during a Kids Talk forensic interview that Short would enter her bedroom and masturbate and that she saw pornographic images on his cellphone. She said Short could be seen performing a sex act in a bathroom and a bedroom where he would be naked at the time. The girl said she had a lock placed on her bedroom door and would prop it shut at night. Short declined to be interviewed by police without an attorney being present.
