Ithra to showcase its art collection at Riyadh Art Week

Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) is participating in the inaugural edition of Riyadh Art Week, organized by the Visual Arts Commission. The event, which kicked off on Sunday, will run until April 13 in the Jax District and Al-Mousa Center, in addition to other locations across Riyadh. During Riyadh Art Week, Ithra Center is presenting a selection of 15 important artworks from its museum collection, titled "Landscapes and Memory," as part of the event's invited collections exhibition, "Collections in Dialogue," in the JAX area. The exhibition highlights a rich and diverse range of artistic practices and cultural expressions, featuring works by local and international artists, sculptures, paintings, and installations, offering a captivating glimpse into Ithra's precious art collection. The exhibition also includes works by distinguished artists, including 'Knowledge Excavations' by Saudi artist and filmmaker Mohammed Al Faraj (2022), 'Oil Candy' by Maha Malluh (Saudi Arabia -- 2019), and three works by American artist Gregory Mahoney: 'Sea Land' (1991), 'Five Gallons / Five Oceans' (1995), and 'The End of the World' (1993). Also on display are: Screens (2005) by South Korean artist Do Ho Soo, three photographs by Saudi photographer Moath Al-Awfi, The Scene (2019), I Am the One (2019), and The Family (2019), in addition to Figure in Communication by Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto (2019), Who Am I? by Lebanese calligrapher Jumana Medlej (2015), and Sultan bin Fahd 1440 (2016) by Saudi Artist Sultan bin Fahd. Tornado by Palestinian sculptor Abdulrahman Qatanani (2020), The Place Is Mine, Series 3 by Palestinian artist Hazem Harb (2019), and Burning by Egyptian painter and sculptor Moataz Nasr (2019) are part of the exhibition. The exhibition offers a glimpse into Ithra's diverse collection, highlighting its diversity and celebrating the vibrancy of contemporary art. 'Ithra's participation in Riyadh Arts Week is an opportunity to celebrate creative expression and embrace diverse artistic and cultural perspectives,' said Farah Abu Shalih, Director of Ithra Museum. 'Ithra is also an opportunity to share a glimpse into Ithra Museum and its rich art collection.'

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) announced in a press release Monday its participation as an Exhibition Partner at the inaugural edition of Art Week Riyadh. This initiative of the Ministry of Culture's Visual Arts Commission is being held from April 6 –13, 2025, across key cultural sites in Riyadh, including JAX District and Al Mousa Center, the Saudi Press Agency said. The event celebrates the nation's dynamic art scene, bringing together leading local and international galleries, cultural institutions, artists, patrons, collectors, and arts enthusiasts, under the theme "At The Edge". The release stated that during Art Week Riyadh, Ithra is presenting a curated selection of 15 significant works from its museum collection, titled "Landscape and Memory," as part of the event's invited collections exhibition, under the title of "Collections in Dialogue'. Spanning from the early 1900s to 2022, the display showcases a rich variety of artistic practices and cultural expressions. Featuring both regional and international artists, it includes sculptures, paintings, and installations, providing a captivating overview of Ithra's prized art collection. Moreover, the exhibition explores the interplay between material memory, transformation, and the landscapes that shape identity, questioning how history is preserved, reinterpreted, and reimagined through art. The exhibition portrays memory not only as a mark on the world but as a dynamic force that links us to the past while opening new possibilities for the future. Featured artists and their works include the Saudi Arabian artist and film director Mohammed Alfaraj's Fossils of Knowledge (2022), Maha Malluh's Oil Candies (KSA - 2019), and three works by American artist Gregory Mahoney: Sea Land (1991), Five Gallons/Five Oceans (1995), and End of the World (1993). Also on display are South Korean artist Do Ho Suh's Screens (2005); three photographs by Saudi photographer Moath Aloufi, The Scene (2019), I Am the One (2019), and The Family (2019); as well as Italian master Michelangelo Pistoletto's Persone in Comunicazione (2019); Lebanese calligraphy artist Joumana Medlej's Who Am I? (2015); and Saudi eclectic artist Sultan bin Fahad's Sultan Bin Fahad 1440 AH (2016). Additionally, Palestinian sculptor Abdul Rahman Katanani's Tornado (2020); Palestinian artist Hazem Harb's The Place is Mine, Series #3 (2019); and Egyptian painter and sculptor Moataz Nasr's Burning (2019) are also part of the exhibition. The release emphasized that the exhibition provides a glimpse into Ithra's diverse collection, highlighting its variety and celebrating the vibrancy of contemporary art. Head of Museum at Ithra Farah Abushullaih said, "Ithra's participation in Art Week Riyadh is an opportunity to celebrate creative expression and embrace diverse artistic and cultural perspectives. Art Week Riyadh takes place in JAX District. It's time to paint the town. Art Week Riyadh runs from 6 to 13 April, and takes place in JAX District and across the capital. For 2025, the theme is At The Edge, and it brings together more than 45 different sources, from collections to galleries. So, if you're craving culture, here's what you need to know. Art Week Riyadh is open to the public, and brings together exhibitions and public talks. Visitors can explore contemporary arts and culture, and hear from the creative community. The flagship exhibition, At The Edge, covers three themes: Everyday Life, Landscapes, and Motifs. A range of talks and workshops will also be available, and they will look at the themes in more detail. At the Al Mousa Center, more than 15 galleries have come together with exhibitions. The participating galleries include Abstract Art Gallery, Ahlam Gallery, China Saudi Cultural Art Association, ERRM Art Gallery, Frame Art Gallery, Tequin Art Gallery and more. JAX District will host three exhibitions, which explore the Kingdom's changing identity and the importance of preserving visual culture. The artists featured include Do Ho Suh, Maha Malluh, Mohammad Alfaraj, Hazem Harb, Gregory Mahoney, Sultan bin Fahad and more. Art Jameel showcases experimental film and video art. This presentation brings together pieces from local as well as regional artists. The artists include Ahaad Alamoudi, Hiwa K, Bouchra Khalili, Basim Magdy, Ahmed Mater and more.
