Oman celebrates International Workers Day
Muscat: The General Federation of Oman Workers (GFOW) on Sunday marked the International Workers Day, which falls on 1 May every year. The celebration, held in Muscat, was aimed to highlight the importance of the labour union movement in the Sultanate of Oman and its role in improving working conditions in private sector establishments. The ceremony, held under the auspices of Dr. Mahad Said Ba'Owain, Minister of Labour, was attended by senior government officials, representatives of some private sector establishments, civil society institutions and labour syndicates in the Sultanate of Oman. A 'Labour Syndicates Data Management Programme' was launched on the sidelines of the ceremony. The programme seeks to facilitate labour syndicate procedures, improve communication among labour syndicates, provide a unified database for all and achieve transparency in labour union action. A programme on 'Privileges of GFOW Affiliate Members' was also launched in cooperation with the local firm Thawani Technologies. The ceremony saw the felicitation of various labour syndicates, government departments, private establishments and civil society institutions that won the 'Labour Syndicate Action Award 2025'. The gesture was made in appreciation for the award winners' role in supporting labour action and developing it in a manner that achieves balance in the labour market and securing economic and social stability. The award aims to encourage all target groups to keep up efforts to develop labour movement action in the Sultanate of Oman.

International event in Muscat explores solutions to mitigate impacts of climate change
Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman on Monday hosted the activities of the Oman Climate Week, under the slogan 'Living in a Sustainable World'. The event explores solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change and its applications in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and unify global efforts to ensure the achievement of climate change mitigation goals. The event was opened at Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) under the patronage of Dr. Mahad Said Ba'Owain, Minister of Labour. The week's activities seek to achieve 6 main objectives, namely enhancing climate action, facilitating regional and international cooperation, promoting local, regional and international business, supporting the adoption and expansion of solutions, demonstrating the Sultanate of Oman's commitment and encouraging community participation. Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority said in a speech that as many as 250 speakers are attending the week's activities. They will present research papers at the two accompanying scientific conferences, presented by researchers from more than 60 countries around the world, in addition to more than 20 dialogue sessions with the participation of more than 100 speakers, as well as 15 workshops and training programs with the participation of more than 22 trainers. The event included the launch of three commemorative silver coins celebrating Omani wildlife, issued by the Central Bank of Oman. Each coin bears a coloured image of an element of Omani wildlife that is threatened with extinction. On the sidelines of Oman Climate Week, a global exhibition was held featuring the latest innovations in climate and environmental technology. The week includes a high-level strategic conference bringing together global experts, policy and decision makers, and leaders to address climate challenges and explore solutions, such as mitigating the effects of climate change, adapting to climate change, climate finance, carbon markets, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, climate technologies, loss and damage, and social inclusion. The week's activities include an interactive platform for advanced research and technological progress, presented by scientists, students and community leaders. As many as 250 speakers from more than 60 countries are taking part in the event. Moreover, more than 2,000 registered participants from the Sultanate of Oman, various sisterly and friendly countries, and international and regional organisations are participating in the week's activities.
