Collector's order for school holiday on Shravan Mondays in MP's Ujjain sparks political debate

NEW DELHI: A controversy has emerged in Madhya Pradesh regarding the Ujjain district administration's decision to declare school holidays on Mondays during the month of Shravan , coinciding with the traditional Mahakal Sawari. The Ujjain Collector has mandated closures for all educational institutions within the Ujjain Municipal Corporation boundaries from July 14 to August 11 on Mondays. The schools will alternatively function on the preceding Sundays to maintain academic schedules. "In view of Lord Mahakaleshwar Sawari during Shravan, all the government and non-government schools within the limits of Ujjain Municipal Corporation area will remain closed on July 14, July 21, July 28, August 4, and August 11, every Monday. In lieu of this, the schools will operate as per their scheduled time on July 13, July 20, July 27, August 3, and August 10 on every Sunday, respectively," the order stated. This administrative decision has sparked disagreements between the BJP and Congress parties. Congress representative Arif Masood questioned the necessity of the order, suggesting it was merely to gain favour with the Chief Minister, given that the procession has been traditionally observed without requiring school closures. Masood expressed concerns about potential similar demands from other religious groups, emphasising the need to adhere to constitutional principles rather than making decisions to please political leadership. BJP legislator Rameshwar Sharma defended the decision, suggesting it would enable families to participate in the religious proceedings. He criticised the Congress party's stance, questioning their national allegiance and defending the Collector's authority to declare holidays based on public requirements. The Mahakal Sawari, occurring every Monday during the Sawan month, represents a significant tradition where Baba Mahakal is believed to tour the city. Devotees often wait for extended periods to witness this procession, considering it a blessed opportunity.
