Cabinet okays Rs 862 crore to set up 80MW power generation unit at Koyna
Kolhapur: The state cabinet on Tuesday granted revised administrative approval to allocate Rs 862 crore for the Koyna dam foot power house. The facility will include two units, each with a 40MW power generation capacity, situated on the dam's left bank.
The dam holds a total water capacity of 105TMC. Of this, 67.5TMC supports power generation from the hydro-power complex located on the western side at Pophali in Ratnagiri district. For irrigation, 30TMC is released from the dam gates to sustain lift irrigation schemes in eastern regions. Although there is a foot power house, releasing the additional discharge required for irrigation is not feasible. Therefore, in 2004, two units with a capacity of 40MW each were proposed.
In 2023, the Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation and Mahanirmiti Company Limited (Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited, also known as MahaGenco) reached an agreement to develop the power house. The project's total cost is Rs 1,337 crore, with govt approving Rs 862 crore. The remaining funds will be recovered from the lift irrigation schemes. Lift irrigation projects, such as Tembhu and Takari-Mhaisal, will receive 20TMC of water from the proposed foot house, generating 278 million units of power.
