Pune civic body issues evacuation notice to residents of Padmavatinagar Society building
PUNE : The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Tuesday night ordered residents of Padmavatinagar Society's 'C wing' in Dhankawdi to evacuate the premises following a partial compound wall collapse amid heavy rain. The residents, however, refused and demanded evidence of structural instability of the 28-flat building. "You are hereby informed that upon receiving this notice, you should vacate the premises in your possession and cooperate with us to prevent any loss of life or property. If you fail to do so, we will be compelled to exercise our rights under Section 268 (7) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, and if necessary, with the assistance of the police, to vacate the premises you are occupying," the PMC notice read. Resident Deepak Parekh, a structural engineer, said samples were collected from the site after the wall collapse on Tuesday. "These samples will be used to check the structural stability of the building. Telling the residents to vacate the premises before the structural stability test is not justified," he said. The partial wall collapse also led to a blame game between society members, as former officebearers of the society blamed the new body "for ignoring the concerns." "The civic administration must act against the illegal constructions near the compound walls to avert mishaps," Sanjay Patel, another resident of the society, said. A six-year-old girl and her two brothers (aged 12 and 13) survived miraculously after loose boulders and debris from the lower portion of the compound wall caved in amid heavy rain on Tuesday and crashed through the tin sheet wall to fall on the bed where they were sleeping. At least 15 families of roadside vegetable vendors have been residing in tin shed dwellings close to the wall. These dwellers approached PMC last year to get the society to strengthen the wall. The survivors said the housing society was to be blamed for the mishap. "If the timely action to strengthen the compound wall was taken, this mishap could have been avoided. The authorities should fix the responsibility. We should get compensation," Harshad Khandare, one of the survivors, said. According to PMC officials, a delegation of the society members visited the civic headquarters on Wednesday, where they were asked to take corrective steps. "The works for safeguarding the compound walls will be carried out by the housing society. Steps should be taken to avert such mishaps in the vicinity," Prithviraj B P, PMC additional commissioner, said.

Structural audit of damaged compound wall by CoEP in Pune's Dhankawadi soon
1 2 3 Pune: The College of Engineering Pune (CoEP) technological university will soon conduct a structural audit of the compound wall and other damaged sections of Dhankawadi's Padmavatinagar housing society, where a lower portion of the wall on the perimeter caved in amid heavy rain on Tuesday afternoon. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials said they had requested CoEP to conduct the audit and the varsity had agreed. On Tuesday night, in a notice, the civic body ordered evacuation of 28 properties on the premises "to prevent any loss of life/property". Residents were firm on their stand of not leaving the property even by Thursday. "PMC has given CoEP a letter to conduct the audit. Our future course of action will be taken based on the findings of the report," said Umesh Shidruk, an official of the building permissions department. COEP professor BG Birajdar, who will head the audit, said their department had started the process and other formalities. "We have accepted the proposal for the audit. A site visit will be carried out in a day or two," he added. PMC's evacuation notice to the housing society said: "If you fail to do so, we will be compelled to exercise our rights under section 268 (7) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and, if necessary, get the premises you are occupying vacated with police assistance." "The society has submitted necessary documents to PMC and we will wait for the structural report now," said Sanjay Patel, a resident. At least 15 families of roadside vegetable vendors live in tin shed dwellings close to the wall, which had been rendered structurally dangerous earlier. Last year, the dwellers had approached PMC to get the society to strengthen the wall. "We have been living here for years. Steps need to be taken for our safety and security. We should get compensation for the losses suffered due to the accident," said Harshad Khandare, a resident of the tenements near the compound wall.

Dog licence now a must for pet owners in Navi Mumbai
Navi Mumbai: Pet owners residing within Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) jurisdiction must obtain a valid dog licence, said the civic administration. NMMC recently implemented the NMMC Dog Tax Regulations 1993 under Chapter 11, Section 149(1) and Section 127 (2) (a) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949. State govt has approved these regulations dating back to 1993. NMMC has warned of strict action against those who fail to comply with these regulations and keep dogs without licence. The health department offices are responsible for issuing dog licences, said a civic official, adding that pet owners can apply for the licences through the online portal. To submit an application, visit the NMMC website navigate to 'Citizen Services' and select the Health Department section. "Pet owners should ensure they complete the licensing process promptly to avoid any penalties or legal consequences. The licence serves as official documentation of pet ownership and helps maintain standards of pet care within the community. Regular renewal of dog licences is also essential to maintain valid registration status," said an NMMC health official. NMMC commissioner Kailas Shinde said the civic administration encourages all pet dog owners to cooperate with these regulations and obtain necessary licences for their pets. However, Ramesh Kumar, a pet owner from Navi Mumbai, said making licensing compulsory seems to be a bit of a harsh call on the part of the authorities.

Green buildings in Nagpur to get up to 20% property tax rebate
NAGPUR : In a move to promote environmentally sustainable construction, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to offer up to 20% rebate on property tax for buildings certified by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari issued an order to this effect on May 14. As part of its continuous efforts to tackle rising pollution and temperatures in the city, the NMC is encouraging the use of eco-friendly materials and energy-saving measures in new constructions. Green buildings , which consume less electricity and contribute less to the urban heat island effect, are being actively promoted. According to Chaudhari's order, buildings that obtain IGBC certification will be eligible for a rebate of up to 20% on their property tax. This incentive aligns with the budget provisions for the financial year 2025–26, where the commissioner proposed tax relief under Section 140(B) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act to boost the green construction sector. To qualify for this rebate, a building must have features like rainwater harvesting, use of solar energy, wastewater recycling, and organic composting. An NMC resolution passed on March 28, 2025, already approved additional concessions for IGBC-certified properties. The revised structure of concessions includes Platinum Green Building Certification (additional 10% rebate, making it a total of 20% tax concession), Gold Certification (additional 7.5% rebate, totalling 17.5%), and Silver Certification (additional 5% rebate, totalling 15%). These additional benefits will be available on top of the existing 10% rebate already provided to properties implementing any of the four key eco-friendly systems. How to Apply: Property owners seeking rebate must apply to the Tax Department at the NMC headquarters or zonal offices Application must be accompanied by a valid Green Building Certificate issued by the IGBC
