MSBB raises awareness on plastic pollution, urban biodiversity loss

Nagpur: The Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board (MSBB) observed World Environment Day 2025 with various awareness and clean-up activities, focusing on the theme 'Putting an end to plastic pollution'. Under the guidance of Sivabala S, IFS, MSBB encouraged its staff to reduce the use of plastic and adopt eco-friendly alternatives. As part of the programme, MSBB officials visited the municipal solid waste processing plant at Bhandewadi, run by SusBDe under the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). They observed waste segregation, composting, RDF production, biomining, and plans for setting up a biogas plant. The visit was carried out under the leadership of Surendra Kale, technical officer, MSBB. MSBB also organised a public awareness campaign at Nagpur railway station on Thursday. Commuters were educated about the harmful effects of plastic use and distributed jute bags, encouraging them to follow a sustainable lifestyle as part of Mission LiFE. At the MSBB office, staff members took an oath to reduce plastic use and follow eco-friendly practices. To involve the local community, MSBB organised a cleanliness drive at Telangkhedi garden. Board members, volunteers and citizens helped remove plastic and other non-biodegradable waste from the park. The drive aimed to improve the environment and raise awareness about the link between plastic pollution and urban biodiversity loss. Kale said, "People responded very positively to the event. Many citizens at the public awareness campaign shared that the issue of plastic pollution is something everyone should be aware of. They also felt the need to reduce the use of plastic in their daily lives. It is truly one of the most important issues for ensuring a healthy and safe future for our children and the planet."
