12 schools, colleges fined in mosquito breeding checks

Ahmedabad: Monsoon being the time when cases of vector-borne diseases spike, the civic body has begun inspecting sites that could be hotbeds of mosquito breeding. Tuesday's inspections by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) covered 702 units across the city, including educational institutions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As many as 245 units including 12 eductional institutions were issued notices and slapped fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000 for failing to take preventive measures against mosquito breeding. Teams from AMC's health department inspected 73 units in Central Zone, 38 in North Zone, 84 in East Zone, 151 in West Zone, 200 in South Zone, 85 in North West Zone, and 71 in SouthWest Zone. The highest number of notices - 56- were issued in the West Zone and fines imposed totalled Rs 75,000. As many as 15 units were penalised in the Central Zone, 27 were fined in the North Zone, 49 in the East Zone, 34 in the South Zone, 39 in the NorthWest Zone, and 25 in the SouthWest Zone. Mosquitoes were found breeding in water containers, on terraces, basements, overhead tanks, refrigerator trays, lift pits, open tanks, basements, and coolers. Heavy mosquito breeding was also discovered at construction sites in different areas. In the Lambha area, the Mahek construction site was fined Rs 25,000, the Gujarat Ion Exchange commercial construction site was penalised Rs 20,000, and a Swati construction site in Sarkhej was fined Rs 20,000.
