Karnataka govt. withdraws MoS rank to Sahitya Parishat president Mahesh Joshi
The State government has on Saturday withdrawn the Minister of State rank and all the facilities applicable to that rank to Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) president Mahesh Joshi. Shortly after Mr. Joshi was elected president of the Parishat, the then Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government led by Basavaraj Bommai had accorded MoS rank to him. This move was criticised by many writers then. This was the first time a KSP president was given a MoS rank. Reacting sharply to the government revoking the MoS rank to KSP president, Mr. Joshi said that the Parishat was working as a voice of Kannada and thereby withdrawing this honour to its president was an insult to Kannadigas. 'This will create a problem in the cordial relationship between the KSP and the government,' he added. He further said he had not asked for a MoS rank to be given, but the government accorded this honour following a letter by former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda to then Chief Minister Mr. Bommai.

Joshi surrenders at jail, decision on bail today
Jaipur: Former PHED minister and Congressman Mahesh Joshi surrendered at Jaipur Central Jail Thursday evening following the completion of his 4-day interim bail, which was granted to him due to his wife's death while he was in jail. Earlier in the day, a special CBI court handling Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) cases concluded hearing arguments for a nine-day extension to his bail and will announce its decision Friday. Deepak Chauhan, counsel for Joshi, said, "We have argued that so far he has been cooperative in the PMLA case against him. Be it his arrest after notice or his remand, he cooperated. Now the investigation in this case is over by Enforcement Directorate , thus he should be granted the benefit of bail since bail is a right and jail is an exception." He added that in the PMLA case against Joshi, ED has already filed one chargesheet. "Investigation is over and in case he is needed again, he will appear before ED. There is no point in keeping him in jail," Chauhan argued. After listening to the arguments, the court said it will announce its judgment Friday. Joshi was summoned by ED and later arrested in the investigation into the alleged multi-crore fraud in Jal Jeevan Mission projects during his stint as PHED minister. He was remanded into ED custody for four days until Monday when, due to the death of his wife, he was granted interim bail of four days.
