Delhiwale: Portrait of an ‘OK life'
Ensconced in his living room, Mahesh Kumar, 60, is evaluating his life. Ensconced in his living room, Mahesh Kumar, 60, is evaluating his life. (HT) All his five brothers are gone from the world, he says. 'There are things you can discuss only with your siblings… that is no longer possible for me.' There are also things that one is comfortable sharing only with the immediate family. In that, Mahesh is fortunate. He lives with wife, Renu, in their first-floor flat in Kotla Mubarakpur, along with daughter Himanshi, son Varun, and dog Simba. The eldest child, Ritika, lives with her husband elsewhere in the city. As he natters on, wife Renu enters the living room carrying a tea tray. Her gaze instinctively lifts towards the small temple clamped to the wall, beside the portraits of Mahesh's departed parents. She whispers to Mahesh, asking him to go down to the street to 'Kailash Samose Wale.' The couple expound on the neighbourhood shop's tasty samosa. Such coziness forms the daily texture of Mahesh's private world. He happens to inhabit a public role as well, being an integral element of an institution that many count among Delhi's most significant cultural spaces. For 40 years, Mahesh has been administering a stall of used books in the capital's Sunday Book Bazar. The legendary market has 150 stalls. Mahesh's long-time stall stands out for consistently stocking books and magazines of superior literary quality. Truly rare stuff too shows up every now and then. Just last Sunday, he sold a fat stack of the now-extinct Life magazine, valued by collectors for its landmark photography. Mahesh's set of Life were collectibles from the 1960s, containing current affairs features on historic events—President Kennedy's assassination, Woodstock music festival, etc. 'Until some decades ago, visitors to the market were mostly interested in classics,' the bookseller remarks. 'Today, most visitors look for cheap reprints of self-help books.' In any case, Mahesh's stall will end with him. 'The business of used books involves too much bhagam-bhaag… My kids are graduates, they must have a life of office jobs.' He gradually grows sentimental. 'I had to quit my graduation studies midway because of financial difficulties… the Sunday Book Bazar supported me throughout the years. It helped me successfully perform all the duties of a son, brother, husband and father; it enabled me never to be helpless in front of anybody; it has given me this OK life.' That said, the most satisfying day in Mahesh's week is not Sunday. It is Saturday, when he visits the Kalkaji Mandir in Nehru Place. 'Our lives have become too fast, we are constantly running, we are constantly busy… praying to Mata Rani fills my heart with sukh-shanti.' He and his wife graciously pose for a portrait with their beloved Simba.

WRD launches 38cr monsoon prep work across city, suburbs
Chennai: As the countdown to northeast monsoon begins, the water resources department (WRD) has taken up 38 crore worth of flood-prevention works across Chennai and neighbouring districts. From desilting major rivers to strengthening bunds and clearing encroachments near lakes, officials say efforts are on to complete all works by mid-Sept. The works include desilting major waterways such as Buckingham Canal, Cooum, and Adyar rivers. About 78 projects are underway in 15 zones, while 117 projects are being executed in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet districts. Senior officials, led by water resources secretary J Jayakanthan, inspected these sites to fast-track the progress and instructed officials to finish all the works by Sept 15. An official with the state disaster management department said WRD handed over three major macro drains to GCC for desilting. "In OMR, we asked TNRDC to coordinate with GCC and Metrowater to desilt the drain. Various drinking water utilities are obstructing desilting there. This will be completed by the end of Aug," said the official. They also kicked off sandbar removal in major estuaries at Muttukadu, Poonthottam, Cooum, Adyar, Ennore, and Pulicat to improve water flow. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai At Kosasthalaiyar river, WRD is widening and strengthening the bunds near Vadaperumbakkam and Sayankuppam, which are prone to flooding every season, affecting 10,000 residents. Officials said the Puzhal surplus channels breach at this point and another point downstream where it meets the Kosasthalaiyar River. "Since the river carries both Poondi surplus simultaneously, it causes flooding. So, we are widening and increasing height of bunds by about three metres. It should reduce the impact." In suburban lakes at Radial Road and Chitlapakkam, WRD has focused on removing about 100 encroachments. Deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar said they held a pre-monsoon meeting last week. "Next week, we are having a meeting headed by deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. We will be asking officials to explain the progress in every constituency at that meeting. MLAs too have been instructed to go to the field and monitor status," he said. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

During the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, provided a written reply to a question raised by Eluru MP P. Mahesh Kumar regarding the measures taken by the Central government to prevent road accidents on the National Highway-16 stretch between Gannavaram and Nallajerla in Andhra Pradesh. The Union Minister clarified that the Centre was previously unaware of the fact that, on average, at least one road accident occurs daily on this stretch. He stated that an annual report titled 'Road Accidents in India' is prepared based on information collected from all States and Union Territories. According to a report by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), a total of 1,614 accidents and 254 deaths occurred on the Gannavaram–Nallajerla route over the last five years, the Minister revealed. He further stated that the highway stretch is being maintained by contractors and concessionaires in accordance with contractual agreements to ensure smooth traffic flow. In areas where land settlements have emerged, immediate corrective measures are being taken, he added. To prevent accidents, awareness campaigns involving signboards, speed breakers, and safety measures are being undertaken. The Union Minister also informed that the government continues to monitor road safety in coordination with district police and administrative authorities, prioritising the safety of travellers and implementing effective measures consistently.

Railways rationalises fares, enhances medical facilities to improve passenger services: Ashwini Vaishnaw
The Indian Railways is moving towards a more efficient, safe, and socially inclusive system, Union Minister for Railways, IT, and Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said in the Lok Sabha, in response to questions raised by Eluru MP P. Mahesh Kumar, on Wednesday. Highlighting recent fare adjustments, the Minister explained that, after a five-year gap, the Railways has implemented minimal rationalisation of ticket charges from July 1, 2025. The average increase across sleeper, 3AC, 2AC, and general classes ranges between 0.5 to 2 paisa per kilometre. No fare hike was made for journeys under 500 km in the general class, and suburban fares and Monthly Season Tickets (MST) remain unchanged. The Minister noted that Indian Railways continues to offer significant subsidies—Rs.60,466 crore in FY 2023–24, amounting to nearly 45% of total passenger service costs. Concessions remain for persons with disabilities, patients, and students. The additional revenue generated is being directed towards service improvement, including safety, punctuality, and station redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Services like Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat trains, along with digital platforms such as Rail Madad and UTS Mobile App, are being expanded for better commuter access. Responding to a separate question from the same MP regarding emergency medical services, the Minister informed that medical boxes equipped with life-saving equipment and oxygen are now available at stations and onboard trains, following Supreme Court directives and AIIMS recommendations. Frontline railway staff, including ticket examiners and station masters, are receiving regular first-aid training, and emergency contact details of nearby medical facilities are displayed at stations. Ambulance services are being coordinated with state governments and private providers to ensure prompt medical response. These efforts, the Minister said, reaffirm Indian Railways' commitment to passenger welfare and safety.

Hyderabad: In a public notice, the Telangana Medical Council (TGMC) has cautioned registered medical practitioners of all streams of medicine, including allopathy, dental and AYUSH, against using unrecognised certifications like modern scientific diploma/fellowship training and certification programs offered by the Council of Cosmetology, Trichology and Regenerative and Aesthetic Sciences of India, Institute of Laser and Aesthetic Medicine (ILAMED) and Asian Institute of Advanced Dentistry (AIAD), among others, which the Council said had no recognition whatsoever. According to Section 35 of the NMC Act 2019, medical qualification granted by any university or medical institution in India should be listed and maintained by the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board or the Post-Graduate Medical Education Board. According to the Section 37 of the NMC Act, the medical qualifications granted by any statutory or other body in India which are covered by the categories listed in the schedule should be recognised medical qualifications for the purposes of this Act. Dr Mahesh Kumar said that a modern scientific medicine qualification will be recognised only if it is listed and maintained by the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board, NMC or the Post-Graduate Medical Education Board, NMC, including undergraduate, postgraduate or super-speciality fellowship modern scientific medicine qualification. Medical qualifications granted by any statutory or other body, which are covered by the categories listed in the Schedule, are the recognised medical qualifications.
