Egypt, Russia discuss localising electrical systems, equipment manufacturing

Egypt's Electricity Minister Mahmoud Essmat met with Alexei Kononenko, Vice President of AtomAstroyExport and Project Manager of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Station, along with his accompanying delegation, to discuss strengthening cooperation, enhancing coordination, and advancing joint efforts to increase the share of locally manufactured components in joint projects. The talks focused on transferring and localising selected industries that supply equipment for nuclear power plants—industries already engaged in projects across several countries in the Middle East. Discussions also reviewed the latest progress in executing the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, confirming that works are proceeding according to the approved schedule and timelines. Attention was given to the role of manufacturing departments as vital facilities within the project, including the production of components for the reactor building's inner containment vessel—a key technical and engineering element of this strategic national undertaking. The meeting highlighted ongoing local manufacturing of several major components, including the cooling system connections, which are now produced entirely in Egypt. Egyptian workers currently make up around 80% of the total workforce on the project, reflecting sustained efforts to enhance domestic participation. Officials also explored new areas of cooperation with entities such as the Arab Organization for Industrialization to further expand the localisation of industry and the domestic production of electrical equipment. The talks addressed steps already taken to localise the manufacturing of a range of electrical systems, equipment, and components, as well as ways to expand training programmes to prepare the workforce required for plant operations. These training initiatives are being implemented both domestically and abroad. The meeting concluded with an outline of measures to be taken under the framework of ongoing Egyptian–Russian coordination, with close cooperation between on-site teams. Progress reviews and future requirements were discussed, reaffirming the shared commitment to completing the strategic project in line with agreed plans and schedules. Preparations are also under way for the installation of the turbine generator for the first nuclear unit, which is expected to arrive at the El Dabaa site before the end of this year. Minister Essmat stressed that there are presidential directives to intensify efforts to transfer technology and localise the manufacturing of electrical systems, equipment, and components as part of Egypt's peaceful nuclear energy programme for electricity generation. He noted that Egypt has many qualified entities capable of contributing to this field, highlighting the ongoing partnership and coordination with the Russian side. He further confirmed that implementation of the El Dabaa project is progressing as planned, with continuous follow-up and strong commitment from all parties in Egypt, Russia, and participating international companies to adhere to the project's timetable, complete its various phases, and connect the plant to the national grid on schedule. Essmat underscored the special significance of the El Dabaa plant within Egypt's peaceful nuclear energy programme and its alignment with the national energy strategy. This strategy emphasises an energy mix that diversifies electricity generation sources, expands reliance on new, renewable, and clean energy, and reduces fuel consumption.

Egypt's AOI inaugurates new production line for high-voltage electricity towers

Egypt - The Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) on Monday inaugurated a new production line for high and ultra-high voltage electricity towers at its aircraft factory, part of a plan to localise technology and increase domestic manufacturing. The opening was attended by AOI Chairman Mukhtar Abdel Latif and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Essmat, along with other senior officials. The AOI chairman said the state-owned organisation aims to achieve self-sufficiency and meet all of the electricity ministry's needs for power towers nationwide at competitive prices and according to international quality standards, under the slogan 'Made in Egypt.' He added that there are future plans to expand to meet the needs of regional markets. The new production line, established at the AOI's aircraft factory, is equipped with the latest digital manufacturing machinery. It has an initial annual production capacity of 15,000 tons, which is planned to increase to 30,000 tons per year by the end of this year. Abdel Latif noted that the new line builds on the factory's success in localising the manufacturing of telecommunications towers with 100% local content. For his part, the electricity minister said the new production line is a fruit of the partnership with the AOI and efforts to transfer modern technology and localise industry, particularly in electrical equipment. Essmat stated that the ministry gives preferential advantages to the use of local products in its projects, especially in renewable energy. He noted that the national energy strategy aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix to over 42% by 2030 and 65% by 2040, which supports the plan to localise the manufacturing of related equipment. He added that work is currently underway to expand the solar cell industry, localise the manufacturing of energy storage batteries, and produce specific equipment for several projects the ministry is implementing. The minister also said that future tenders for renewable energy projects will include special conditions prioritising local manufacturing. © 2025 Daily News Egypt. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Egypt's President reviews energy plan, stresses renewables and localisation

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has directed the government to intensify efforts to attract investment in the renewable energy sector and pursue the local manufacturing of its components, the presidency said in a statement. The president met in Alamein City on Tuesday with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Essmat to review the electricity ministry's action plan. According to presidential spokesperson Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, the discussion covered the development of Egypt's energy mix, the use of renewable energy and storage batteries, and efforts to improve the national grid through electrical interconnection projects. The electricity minister outlined measures taken by the ministry to improve services, including coordinating with the petroleum ministry to secure gas and fuel for power stations. He also detailed the regular monitoring of maintenance programmes, efforts to combat electricity theft and reduce losses in the network. Essmat stated that plans were underway to add approximately 2,000 megawatts (MW) of new capacity from renewable sources, representing investments of around $2.3bn. The spokesperson added that the meeting also addressed efforts to localise the manufacturing of equipment for the electricity and renewable energy sectors. This includes coordination with major foreign companies that manufacture storage batteries and wind turbines to establish those industries in Egypt. The minister provided an update on the national grid's capacity to absorb renewable energy. He noted that current installed renewable capacity totals 8,031 MW, sourced from wind, solar, and hydropower. The meeting also reviewed projections for renewable capacity in 2030 under the country's Integrated and Sustainable Energy Strategy, as well as the expected solar and wind capacity to be added to the grid by June 2028. The spokesperson said the meeting also covered developments on major energy projects. These include the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, the 3,000 MW Egypt-Saudi Arabia electrical interconnection project with investments of about $1.8bn, and the ongoing efforts to implement the Egypt-Greece electrical interconnection. President Al-Sisi stressed the need for the government to ensure a sustainable supply of electricity for the national grid, industrial sectors, and services, and to intensify work on projects aimed at raising the efficiency of the energy system. He directed the government to continue improving electricity services in all governorates and to enhance the national grid's ability to handle expected increases in consumption. This would be achieved through the continuous modernisation of generation plants, transmission and distribution networks, and control centres, the statement said. © 2024 Daily News Egypt.
