Sabah's ethnic literature has potential to flourish within, beyond Malaysia
Dr Henry Bating (front left) during the field research with FIB UNAIR students. KOTA KINABALU (June 2): Sabah's ethnic literature has the potential to flourish both within and outside of Malaysia due to its recognition and support from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), as well as its relevance to communities and ethnicities within the BIMP-EAGA zone. Senior lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Dr Henry Bating, said that the development of Sabah's ethnic literature — including that of Sarawak, the Chinese (Mahua), Indian (Kayvean/Tamil), Siamese descendants, and the Orang Asli — has directly received support from DBP through, among other initiatives, the annual multi-ethnic literature seminars. 'Meanwhile, the connection of Sabah's ethnic literature with communities in the BIMP-EAGA zone allows it to thrive beyond Malaysia's borders,' he said while delivering a guest lecture at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in Surabaya, Indonesia on May 27. Henry, who also chairs the Kadazandusun Language Unit at the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language (PPIB) at UMS, views Sabah's ethnic literature — due to its cross-border community ties — as a valuable resource to broaden students' understanding of the associated cultures and communities. 'Cultural and community knowledge can help students master listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, including singing, as part of the Kadazandusun language elective course offered at PPIB UMS,' he added. The guest lecture and field research were part of an ongoing collaboration between FIB UNAIR and PPIB UMS that began a year ago. Two senior lecturers from PPIB participated in the guest lecture program. Henry presented a lecture titled 'Sabah Ethnic Literature and Multiculturalism in Malaysian and Indonesian Literature', while Dr Shakiratul Hanany Abdul Rahman delivered a lecture on 'Malay Drama in the Teaching of English in Malaysian Secondary Schools'. As part of the development of Sabah's ethnic literature, the Momogun Writers Association of Malaysia (Momogunsia) once organized a regional literature seminar involving presenters from the University of the Philippines (UP), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and the Central Kalimantan Cultural Board on October 22, 2016, at SMK Matunggong. This cross-border seminar was financially and logistically supported by DBP and the Office of the Kota Marudu Member of Parliament, which was then represented by Datuk Seri Dr. Maximus J. Ongkili.

Mahua heritage brew leaves flat taste in state market
Bhopal: Two years after its launch with much fanfare, Mahua heritage liquor has failed to find takers in the state, despite govt efforts to promote it through bars, shops, and tourism outlets. The state govt launched the product in Aug 2023 with an aim to create a market for the liquor rooted in the state's tribal tradition. But the initiative has failed, with poor consumer response and no visible strategy to revive its interest among drinkers. In Aug 2022, the govt gave its nod for production of Mahua -- branded as 'Mond'. In Jan 2023, the govt notified the MP heritage liquor rules. Two self-help groups in Dindori and Alirajpur were given relaxations and exemption by the govt for its production. The Mahua liquor is brewed locally as part of the tribal empowerment drive. The govt also assisted in setting up production units. A Pune-based institute provided production training to the two self-help groups. As part of a pre-launch promotion, a peg of Mahua liquor was offered for free in bars of MP tourism, but it could not attract the booze lovers. After the launch it was made available from shops selling wine and in bars of the state tourism corporation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The govt later insisted that bars should keep Mahua liquor hoping that tipplers would gradually get used to it, but nothing of that sort happened. The Mahua liquor, with the brand name of Mond, was introduced in a bottle of 180 ml and 750 ml. A 750 ml bottle costs around Rs 800 and 180 ml bottle costs Rs 200. The govt has also introduced a dedicated course of Mahua liquor making in the state for the tribal people. However, all these steps failed to get a good market for the Mahua liquor, and the govt now feels it has done its part, but the need was to brand the heritage liquor in a professional manner by roping in private agencies having expertise in the subject. LOP Dr Charandas Mahant urges Chhattisgarh CM, speaker to install BR Ambedkar's statue at new Assembly complex in Nava Raipur
RAIPUR: With the Chhattisgarh govt advancing its plan to relocate the Vidhan Sabha to a new, state-of-the-art complex in Nava Raipur, Leader of Opposition Dr Charandas Mahant has written to chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Assembly Speaker Dr Raman Singh, urging the installation of a statue of Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar at the new Assembly complex. Dr Mahant stated that the architect of the Constitution, Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, shaped the Constitution with clarity, foresight, and a spirit of social justice. He added that this serves as an ideal for any democratic nation and it is everyone's duty to follow it. Dr Mahant mentioned that during his tenure as Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker, he announced the installation of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar's statue in the proposed new Assembly complex. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his in-principle consent to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed Chhattisgarh Assembly in November 2025. Dr Mahant believes this would be an opportune time to unveil the statue of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, which would be a great honour for the Scheduled Caste community in Chhattisgarh and India. This would also serve the broader public interest in remembering the great leader's contributions. The new Assembly complex, situated in Sector-19 of Nava Raipur, spans approximately 51 acres. It is designed to include the main Assembly building, MLA rest houses, residential quarters for officers and employees, and an auditorium with a seating capacity of 500. The complex will be powered by solar energy, incorporate rainwater harvesting systems, and feature extensive plantations of native tree species such as Mahua, Kusum, Sal, and Sagon. The new Assembly complex is expected to be fully operational by September 2025. The relocation of the Vidhan Sabha marks a pivotal step in the development of Nava Raipur in Chhattisgarh's new capital. The city is envisioned as a modern, smart, and sustainable urban centre, integrating administrative functions with cultural heritage. The new Assembly complex is set to become a symbol of democratic values and the state's commitment to sustainable development.
