LOP Dr Charandas Mahant urges Chhattisgarh CM, speaker to install BR Ambedkar's statue at new Assembly complex in Nava Raipur
RAIPUR: With the Chhattisgarh govt advancing its plan to relocate the Vidhan Sabha to a new, state-of-the-art complex in Nava Raipur, Leader of Opposition Dr Charandas Mahant has written to chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Assembly Speaker Dr Raman Singh, urging the installation of a statue of Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar at the new Assembly complex.
Dr Mahant stated that the architect of the Constitution, Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, shaped the Constitution with clarity, foresight, and a spirit of social justice. He added that this serves as an ideal for any democratic nation and it is everyone's duty to follow it.
Dr Mahant mentioned that during his tenure as Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker, he announced the installation of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar's statue in the proposed new Assembly complex.
He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his in-principle consent to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed Chhattisgarh Assembly in November 2025.
Dr Mahant believes this would be an opportune time to unveil the statue of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, which would be a great honour for the Scheduled Caste community in Chhattisgarh and India. This would also serve the broader public interest in remembering the great leader's contributions.
The new Assembly complex, situated in Sector-19 of Nava Raipur, spans approximately 51 acres. It is designed to include the main Assembly building, MLA rest houses, residential quarters for officers and employees, and an auditorium with a seating capacity of 500.
The complex will be powered by solar energy, incorporate rainwater harvesting systems, and feature extensive plantations of native tree species such as Mahua, Kusum, Sal, and Sagon.
The new Assembly complex is expected to be fully operational by September 2025.
The relocation of the Vidhan Sabha marks a pivotal step in the development of Nava Raipur in Chhattisgarh's new capital. The city is envisioned as a modern, smart, and sustainable urban centre, integrating administrative functions with cultural heritage.
The new Assembly complex is set to become a symbol of democratic values and the state's commitment to sustainable development.

Seven NCP MLAs join NDPP in Nagaland: Ajit Pawar cites ‘discontent', rules out Anti-Defection Law
In a major political setback for Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), all the seven NCP MLAs in Nagaland have defected to the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) of Nagaland. Joining of the NCP MLAs have increased the strength of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio's party in the state assembly, giving the NDPP a clear majority on its own. Speaking to the media on Sunday, Ajit Pawar confirmed the development and acknowledged that the seven MLAs had been expressing discontent over the lack of development work and political traction in the state. 'About two to three months ago, the seven MLAs from our Nagaland unit had come to meet me. They told me that they are facing issues there. no work was being done for them on the ground,' Pawar said. 'I even spoke to the Chief Minister there regarding their concerns. Yes, there was discontent among them, that much is true,' he said further adding that he will take more information on it. 'Over the past two days, I was unwell, so don't have much information about it. but now I have begun gathering more detailed information about the developments in Nagaland,' he said. Pawar also clarified that the anti-defection law would not apply in this case, as all seven legislators have defected collectively, thus fulfilling the legal condition for exemption under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. 'Since all seven MLAs have joined the ruling party together, the anti-defection law does not come into effect,' he noted. With the defection of all the seven MLAs Ajit Pawar-led NCP will have no representation in the Nagaland Assembly.

Aptness of civilians to bear arms is real issue
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced that the State's 'original inhabitants and indigenous communities' can get licences to buy firearms to protect themselves in the face of insecurity over infiltration and life threats in areas bordering Bangladesh where government presence is minimal. The Opposition has pointed out that the decision would show the security infrastructure along the international border in a poor light and even give a fillip to gun culture. In communally sensitive Assam, where Assembly elections are due early next year, the announcement has sparked a debate. The policy raises some eyebrows. The government did not say if it had first considered strengthening border forces before announcing the policy. Protecting people's lives is a core function of the State, and the policy could be misinterpreted as ineffective governance and policing in the border areas. Secondly, vetting licence seekers to exclude the unoriginal and the non-indigenous could fuel fresh confusion in Assam amid official attempts to weed out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Thirdly, the stringent police verification process for granting licences to 'genuine' citizens could raise allegations of discrimination. Fourthly, many people in these areas still struggle to access basic amenities, and it's unrealistic to expect them to afford an expensive firearm, undergo training, and acquire the cognitive skills necessary to understand the rules of self-defence. The well-off among them would easily bear arms, even creating an 'armed elite' within society.

UP: Three sentenced to life in jail for murder of SP polling agent during 2022 polls
A court in Shahjahanpur has sentenced three men to life imprisonment for the murder of a youth after he allegedly tried to stop a group of people from casting votes during the 2022 Assembly election in Tilhar, suspecting bogus voting. The victim, Sudhir, was a polling agent of the Samajwadi Party. 'The court sentenced all three accused—Rakesh Singh, Rajeshwar Singh, and Vishesh Yadav—to life imprisonment in the murder case of Sudhir,' said Government Counsel (Shahjahanpur) Rajeev Awasthi, adding nine prosecution witnesses were examined during the trial. The three – all residents of Chakora village in Nigohi — were convicted under IPC section 302 (murder) and 304 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention). Roshan Lal Verma, who was Samajwadi Party's candidate from Tilhar Assembly seat, said: 'Sudhir was my polling agent and killed by men associated with the BJP.' The BJP denied having any association with the convicts. 'I have heard about the case and the convicts have no association with the party and never been any office-bearers,' said BJP's Shahjahanpur district president Krishna Chandra Mishra. He added that Sudhir did not hold any party post in the Samajwadi Party. Following the verdict, Rakesh and Vishesh, who were out on bail, were taken into custody. Rajeshwar Singh had been in jail since his arrest. According to the public prosecutor, Sudhir's father had lodged a police complaint alleging that his son was attacked and killed by assailants on the morning of February 15, 2022. He alleged that the attack was the result of a dispute that took place a day earlier when Sudhir—who was serving as a polling agent for the Samajwadi Party—had a heated argument with three youths after stopping them from casting bogus votes.
