Magakala road and bridge project 100% complete

The Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) continues to improve access and mobility in rural areas. The Magakala Access Road and Bridge Project will soon be handed to the communities. The FTLM's mayor, Eddie Maila, visited the site on May 29 for inspection before its official handover. This project in the FTLM's Ward 39 (Mohlaletsi) is 100% complete. Maila commended the community for working with the municipality and the contractors to ensure that the project is implemented without major hindrances. Before the construction of this road, it was difficult for the community to access essential services such as schools and clinics due to the harsh conditions of the gravel road. Access was especially limited during rainy season as there was no bridge to cross the river. Maila and his team took a walkabout on the four kilometre stretch of the road to assess its condition. He said the completed project will bring much relief to the Magakala community in terms of safer roads and accessibility. Nthabi Tladi, a community member, thanked the mayor and the municipality for implementing the road project, as it was difficult for the residents to conduct their daily business. She said the road is going to change their lives forever. After visiting the Magakala access road, Maila also conducted another inspection at Debeila-Mohlaletsi road. This inspection was done to give the mayor an insight on the challenges raised by the community and other stakeholders on the development of the road project. Maila indicated that the road's completion is long overdue and all the remaining issues must be addressed, so it could be handed over to the community. Fetakgomo Tubatse unveils new vehicle fleet

A fleet of new vehicles was unveiled at the Civic Centre in Burgersfort on May 8, with the aim of improving service delivery to the residents of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM). The mayor, Cllr Eddie Maila, handed over the new waste management vehicles to the municipality's Department of Community Services and a tractor loader backhoe (TLB) to infrastructure development and technical services. The fleet consists of one compactor truck, a refuse waste cage truck and a TLB. The new fleet will be utilised to extend the provision of waste management services to rural areas. This is part of the FTLM's efforts to create a safer and cleaner environment within communities and to mitigate the effects of climate change. Maila applauded management for procuring the new fleet to expand municipal services to far-flung and rural areas. ALSO READ: Maepa road to be completed in August He urged the operators to take care of the new fleet, to expedite service delivery and to save costs for the institution. Maila also warned that laziness by municipal workers would not be tolerated. 'We aim to fix all roads in the municipality. Gone are the days when workers will just relax in their offices and do nothing. If trucks are broken, report this matter to the offices so that replacement parts can be purchased. Workers not willing to accelerate services, can leave their posts in peace and they will be replaced by people willing to do the work,' Maila said. 'I believe the FTLM is on the right path to creating better communities. The municipality is eager for the enhancement of service delivery,' he concluded. Anti-crime project takes local learners on tour of prison

Learners from three Mamelodi schools embarked on a tour to Emthonjeni Youth Correctional Centre in the Baviaanspoort prison recently. The tour on April 22 was a build-up to the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni's school project. Mthombeni's projects form part of the crime awareness campaign in schools and Department of Correctional Services facilities. Police spokesperson, Sergeant Daphney Maila said they partnered with Mamelodi police stations, CPF, Department of Correctional Services, Department of Community Safety, Moses Mabhida Foundation and Teenage Ministry Movement. Maila said the learners who participated in the tour were from Solomon Mahlangu Freedom High School, Modiri Technical High School and Bona Lesedi High School. 'The learners were identified by the principals of the schools according to the different challenges,' said Maila. Constable Penelope Khulong from Mamelodi East police station said prison wardens facilitating the tour indicated that they were disappointed at the number of learners. The learners were visiting the facility due to bad behaviour, instead of visiting places such as museums, art galleries or even sports facilities, environments that are meant to build young minds. Khulong said the wardens said the name of the facility, Emthonjeni, means 'a water spring', so the centre is there to wash away that which was bad and enable inmates to rectify the mistakes of their past. She said the wardens further highlighted that crime is not something that should be glorified, but learners can change their ways so they do not have to end up in prison. Learners were given a tour of the different parts of the prison and glimpsed the daily life of inmates. In the last part of the tour, learners had an interactive session with four male inmates who were imprisoned for crimes such as murder, business robbery and common robbery. The inmates each gave an account of what led them to a life of crime for learners to understand that bad behaviour, such as bullying, assaulting one another and gang activity, will only lead to prison. They further encouraged learners to respect their peers, teachers and most importantly, their parents. A representative from the Teenage Ministry Movement closed the session with a prayer and applauded all the stakeholders for their effort in building better communities.
