‘Bahuda Yatra' begins ahead of schedule

Puri: Lord Jagannath's 'Bahuda Yatra' or return car festival began here on Saturday with thousands of devotees pulling the chariot of Lord Balabhadra's 'Taladhwaja' after ceremonial 'pahandi' and Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb performing 'chhera pahanra' (sweeping) rituals. Though the pulling of chariots was slated to start at 4 pm, it began at about 2.45 pm much ahead of the schedule amid chants of 'Jai Jagannath', 'Haribol' and beating of cymbals. The chariots of Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath followed Lord Balabhadra's Taladhwaja. Earlier, the sibling deities, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath, were carried to 'Taladhwaja', 'Darpadalana' and 'Nandighosha' chariots respectively in a ritual called 'pahandi'. The 'pahandi' comes from the Sanskrit word 'padamundanam', which means taking slow steps movement by spreading feet. The 'pahandi' of the trinity began with Chakraraj Sudarshan, followed by Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and finally Lord Jagannath. Though the 'pahandi' ritual was earlier scheduled to begin at 12 noon, it started at 10 am, much earlier. The ceremonial procession took around two hours following which the deities were seated on the chariots. The majestic chariots were pulled by devotees from Shree Gundicha temple to the 12th-century shrine, the main seat of Lord Jagannath, a distance of about 2.6 km. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly Naveen Patnaik greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of Bahuda Yatra. 'Greetings to all on the occasion of Bahuda Yatra. By the grace of the Lord, everyone's life be filled with happiness, peace and prosperity,' Majhi said in a post on X. Amid the beating of gongs and blowing of conches and cymbals, 'pahandi' rituals were performed. While Lord Balabhadra was carried to the chariot on a line called 'dhadi pahandi', Goddess Subhadra, the sister of Lord Jagannath, was brought to her 'Darpadalana' chariot in a special procession called 'sunya pahandi' (the Goddess looking at the sky while being carried to the chariot) by servitors. When Lord Jagannath finally stepped out of Shree Gundicha temple, emotions spilled over the Grand Road as devotees raised slogans like 'Jai Jagannath' and 'Haribol'. Before the 'pahandi,' a number of customary rituals like 'Mangla Arati' and 'Mailam' were held before the presiding deities came out from the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. The 'chhera pahanra' ritual or sweeping of the floor of the chariots with a golden broom was performed by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, the titular king of Puri, on all the chariots. The ritual started at 1.35 pm. The Gajapati began 'chhera pahanra' on Taladhwaja chariot of Lord Balabhadra followed by Lord Jagannath's chariot and lastly on Devi Subhadra's chariot. Lakhs of devotees thronged the pilgrim town of Puri to witness the Bahuda Yatra. The festival is being conducted under unprecedented security arrangements in the backdrop of a stampede near Gundicha temple on June 29 when three persons were killed and around 50 others injured. A total of 10,000 personnel, including 6,150 of Odisha Police and 800 personnel of the CAPFs, have been deployed in the temple town to ensure that no such incident takes place, an officer said. The police issued a traffic advisory for visitors in anticipation of a huge turnout.

Rath Yatra celebrated with devotion and grandeur in Odisha's Angul

Angul (Odisha): The sacred festival of Rath Yatra was celebrated with great devotion and traditional splendor at Jagannath Temple in Dev Bhumi, Jindal Nagar, Angul, drawing thousands of devotees to witness the divine journey of the Chaturdha Murti -- Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Sudarshan. The day commenced with Mangala Arati at the Anasara Bedi, followed by a series of age-old rituals like Mailam and Tadapa Lagi. Devotees thronged the temple premises from early morning, immersing themselves in spiritual chants and devotional hymns. The highlight of the celebration was the grand Pahandi Bije procession, where the deities were ceremonially brought to their beautifully decorated chariots. The atmosphere was electric with the sounds of conch shells, gongs, and chants of 'Haribol' reverberating through the air. Adding to the sanctity of the occasion, Kurukshetra MP Naveen Jindal, accompanied by his wife Shallu Jindal and his mother, Savitri Jindal, MLA from Hisar, Haryana, actively participated in the rituals. Naveen Jindal performed the revered Chhera Pahanra -- the symbolic sweeping of the chariot platforms, a gesture of humility and devotion. Speaking on the occasion, Naveen Jindal said, 'I extend my heartfelt wishes to everyone as Jagannath Yatra begins. I pray to the Lord for the welfare and happiness of all.' At exactly 3 p.m., the much-awaited chariot pulling began. Hundreds of devotees and local villagers gathered with immense enthusiasm to pull the divine chariots -- a sacred act believed to bring blessings and prosperity. Rath Yatra, celebrated in June-July, marks the journey of Lord Jagannath and his siblings to their aunt's abode, the Gundicha Temple. The deities remain there for nine days before returning, symbolising love, unity, and devotion. About 10,000 security personnel, including eight companies of the Central Armed Police Forces, have been deployed to the seaside pilgrim town for the event.

Thousands throng Puri as Rath Yatra of Holy Trinity gets underway

Bhubaneswar, June 27 (UNI) Amid frenzied religious fervor and spiritual passion, lakhs of devotees thronged the pilgrim town to witness the famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath and his siblings Lord Balabhadra and their sister Devi Subhadra at Puri on Friday. Devotional fervor took the centre-stage as followers of Jagannath across the state and other parts of the country braved sporadic drizzle to catch glimpses of the grand spectacle. It was a sea of humanity from all across the country and abroad as the majestic chariots marched on the grand road. A multi-layer security net was thrown around to ensure smooth conduct of the festival. AI-powered CCTVs cameras were installed at various locations. National Security Guard (NSG) personnel were deployed to strengthen security arrangements along the Grand Road with State police, paramilitary forces, Rapid Action Force and fire brigade personnel remaining on high alert to counter possible exigencies. Bomb squads, drone monitoring, and marine police surveillance besides aerial and sea-route vigil by coast guard added further vigour to the multi-layer security. The grand ceremony of pulling the three majestic and colourfully decorated chariots on the "Bada Danda", the grand avenue, in front of the 'Shree Mandir' commenced as all the rituals were completed much before the scheduled time. Before the Holy Trinity - Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and their sister Devi Subhadra- set out from the sanctum sanctorum of the 12th century shrine, a number of special rituals like Mangla Arati, Mailam, Tadapa lagi, Rosahoma, Abakasha, Surjya Puja, Dwarapala Puja, Besha Sesha, Gopala Balhava & Sakala Dhupa (Khecudi Bhoga), Ratha Pratishta and Mangalarpana etc were held. Descending from their 'Ratna Sinhasana', the bejewelled throne, the three deities were taken out of the temple one after another down the 22 steps known as "Baisi Pahacha" through the Lions Gate in an elaborate royal ritual called "Pahandi'. The deities moved forward step by step in their journey to the world outside in rhythmic movement amidst beating of cymbals, 'ghantas', 'kahalis', blowing of conch shells and chants in praise of the Lords by the priests and the devotees which reverberated the atmosphere. The first to come out of the shrine was Devi Subhadra followed by Lord Balabhadra and finally Lord Jagannath and was ensconced in their respective chariots. The red and yellow 45-foot high Nandighosh chariot of Lord Jagannath has 16 huge wooden wheels, while the red and green 44-feet high Taladhwaja of Lord Balabhadra has 14 wheels and the 43-foot red and black Darpadalan of Devi Subhadra has 12 wheels. The chariots are the main attraction of the festival which are handcrafted every year, preparations for which begin at least two to three months in advance. Instead of metal or stone, they are carefully crafted with wood, cloth and resin. Once the deities were installed on the chariots, they proceed on their annual nine-day sojourn to the Gundicha temple, about two km down the Grand Road. Legend has it that Gundicha Temple is the birthplace of the Holy Trinity. The Shankaracharya of Puri Govardhana Peeth Swami Nischalananda Saraswati had a darshan of the deities on the chariots along with his disciples. Thereafter, the Gajapati King of Puri, Divyasingh Dev proceeded up to the chariots in his royal palanquin to perform the "Chhera Panhara" ritual, sweeping the platform of the chariots with the help of a golden broom by sprinkling fragrant water and flowers. The first chariot pulled was Darpadala of Devi Subhadra followed by Taladhawaja of Lord Balabhadra. At last, the much awaited "Nandighosh', the chariot of Lord Jagannath was pulled by the devotees amidst chanting of 'Jay Jagannath' 'Hari Bol'. Devotees pull the chariots to their aunt's temple, the Gundicha Temple. It is considered to be a good omen and is also believed to bring luck and success if one gets a chance to pull the chariots. The deities stay at the Gundicha Temple for nine days, after which they ride the chariots back to their Jagannath Temple, a journey known as Bahuda Jatra. The three deities would return to their original abode riding the same wooden chariots in similar fashion on the return car festival known as 'Bahuda Yatra' on July 5. UNI XC PRS
