Mairaj Ahmad Khan, Ganemat Sekhon win skeet trials

Mairaj Ahmad Khan pipped Anantjeet Singh Naruka 55-54 for the top spot in skeet in the second National shotgun selection trials at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Friday. World record holder Angad Vir Singh Bajwa overtook qualification topper Bhavtegh Singh Gill to the third place. Rituraj Bundela and Smit Singh were the others to make the final. In women's skeet, Ganemat Sekhon prevailed over Maheshwari Chauhan 53-52 after having topper qualification with 114. Parinaaz Dhaliwal reached the third spot, ahead of Mansi Raghuwanshi, Darshna Rathore and the junior champion Oshmi Shrivas. A below par third round score of 17, put Karttiki Singh Shaktawat out of the race for the final, as she missed out by two points with 106. The results: Skeet: Men: 1. Mairaj Ahmad Khan 55 (118); 2. Anantjeet Singh Naruka 54 (115); 3. Angad Vir Singh Bajwa 116 (43). Women: 1. Ganemat Sekhon 53 (114); 2. Maheshwari Chauhan 113 (52); 3. Parinaaz Dhaliwal 43 (111). Junior men: 1. Yuvaan 110; 2. Yashvardhan Singh Rajawat 108; 3. Anjaneya Mandawa 106. Junior women: 1. Oshmi Shrivas 108; 2. Mansi Raghuwanshi 107; 3. Agrima Kanwar 104.

World University skeet champion Bhavtegh Singh Gill shot 73 out of 75 to take the lead ahead of World Cup gold medallist Mairaj Ahmad Khan (72) and World record holder Angad Vir Singh Bajwa (71) in the second Shotgun National selection trials at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Thursday. Bhavtegh shot 24, 24 and 25 in the three rounds. Two more rounds will be shot on Friday, and the top six will compete in the final. Rituraj Bundela and Smit Singh were also on 71, while Asian Games silver medallist Anantjeet Singh Naruka had shot 70, following rounds of 23, 25 and 22. In women's skeet, Maheshwari Chauhan led with 69, one point ahead of World Cup medallist Ganemat Sekhon. Parinaaz Dhaliwal (67) and Darshna Rathore (66) were close on heel behind the leaders.

Indian skeet shooters arrive in Cyprus for Shotgun World Cup

Nocosia , The Indian skeet shooting squad has arrived in Cyprus for the year's third ISSF World Cup for shotgun beginning here from Saturday, hoping to continue the impressive runs of Peru and Argentina. The National Rifle Association of India had named a 12-member squad for the Nicosia World Cup in February itself, including for both disciplines of skeet and trap. Skeet competitions, which will continue for three days, begin from next Monday in which two Olympians, Mairaj Ahmad Khan in men's skeet and Maheshwari Chauhan in women's skeet, will lead an otherwise young and inexperienced side. Over 350 athletes from as many as 54 National Olympic Committees have entered the competition including some of the top names in shotgun shooting. The qualifying round of the skeet competitions begin Monday with two rounds of 25 clay targets each which will be repeated on Tuesday, before the fifth and final round and the finals are played out on Wednesday. India's hopes in men's skeet will on the shoulders of Abhay Singh Sekhon, who will be making his senior world cup debut and Rituraj Singh Bundela, who has played four world cups in the past two years, besides Mairaj. In the women's competition, Maheshwari will also be looking to secure a first senior world cup medal alongside Parinaaz Dhaliwal who is four world cups old. The third Indian in women's skeet, the 18-year-old Yashasvi Rathore, will be making her debut. Many former and reigning world and Olympic champions will be lining up for international glory including strong teams from power houses Italy and USA. Meanwhile in Delhi on Thursday, men's 50m rifle 3 positions final was won by the Railways' Akhil Sheoran, a reigning world championship bronze medallist. He shot 462.5 to win the final even as West Bengal's Adriyan Karmakar picked up the junior men's 3P title at the Kumar Surendra Singh Memorial Shooting Championship. Riya Shirish Thatte of Maharashtra was among the other stars of the first day of finals on Thursday, finishing second behind Divya with 28 hits in the senior final, while also finishing fourth in the junior final. Like Riya in Bhopal, Rohit Kanyan of Haryana was the star in Delhi, taking silver in the men's 3P, while also reaching the junior final to finish sixth. Paris Olympic bronze medallist Swapnil Kusale had a mixed day, winning gold for Railways in the men's 3P team event, while also equalling his own championship qualification record of 589, to top the qualifications. He then finished fifth in the men's 3P final.
