AIADMK ex-MP joins rival DMK

Three-time Rajya Sabha member MP V Maitreyan on Wednesday quit AIADMK and joined the ruling DMK on Wednesday becoming the second leader who was once in the good books of J Jayalalithaa, to join her arch rival. Recently, AIADMK's Muslim face Anwar Raajhaa joined the DMK saying that the Edappadi Palaniswami-led Dravidian major, the chief opposition of Tamil Nadu, is trapped in ally BJP's hands. V Maitreyan (PTI) Maitreyan had previously left the AIADMK and joined BJP in 2023 – where he began his political career – after Jayalalithaa's death and went back to the EPS-led party in 2024. EPS appointed him as organising secretary but Maitreyan, an oncologist, had remained sidelined. Maitreyan is associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He quit the BJP and joined the AIADMK in 1999 after the national party formed an alliance with the DMK. 'The path that the AIADMK is taking isn't right. The alliance with BJP was announced by Union home minister Amit Shah, not Palaniswami,' Maitreyan said. 'They talk about a common minimum programme (CMP) which cannot work on issues such as the language policy. Delhi has the switchboard. The AIADMK leadership just does what Delhi wants them to do….The contest in the 2026 assembly is only about who will be in the second position since it is clear that the DMK will emerge victorious.' Maitreyan said his decision to join the ruling DMK was to 'guard the Tamil land, language and the state's dignity (Mann, mozhi, maanam kappom, a DMK slogan).' Maitreyan's exit comes at a time when the AIADMK and BJP are contradicting each other on forming a coalition government in Tamil Nadu. Shah has pitched for a government formed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) if they win the 2026 elections while the AIADMK has rejected the idea since the state has never seen power sharing. Jayalalithaa had made Maitreyan her point person in Delhi for the party. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha thrice and was the party's floor leader in the Upper House for a long time before he was sacked from the post in 2014. After Jayalalithaa's death in 2016, Maitreyan sided with expelled AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam who had officiated as chief minister thrice when Jayalalithaa had to leave the post due to legal cases or her health. After he joined the DMK in the presence of chief minister MK Stalin in the party headquarters on Wednesday, EPS released a statement expelling him from the AIADMK. Though Maitreyan's exit is unlikely to cause any significant dent to the AIADMK, ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, it is significant for the incumbent DMK that leaders of its arch rival are joining them. Former AIADMK MP Maitreyan joins DMK, claims AIADMK alliance directed from Delhi

CHENNAI: Former AIADMK MP V. Maitreyan on Wednesday joined the DMK after meeting party president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin at Anna Arivalayam. However, the move has drawn backlash from DMK supporters on social media, with many alleging that he is essentially a loyalist to BJP ideology who has infiltrated Dravidian politics. A three-term Rajya Sabha MP from the AIADMK, Maitreyan began his political career with the BJP in the early 1990s and even held top positions in its Tamil Nadu state unit. He later joined the AIADMK, as he opposed the BJP forging an alliance with the DMK in 1999. In the AIADMK, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha three times, in 2002, 2007 and 2013. After the death of J. Jayalalithaa, he sided with former CM O. Panneerselvam when the AIADMK split into two groups, a turn of events that led to Edappadi K. Palaniswami assuming the post of Chief Minister. He later joined the BJP again a couple of years ago before returning to the AIADMK in 2024. Palaniswami appointed him as the AIADMK's organising secretary. Speaking to reporters after joining the DMK, Maitreyan said, 'Under the leadership of Stalin, Tamil Nadu is developing on all fronts including education, per capita income and economic growth. Stalin is taking forward the state autonomy ideology of Kalaignar across the country and protecting the interests of all the states.'

Anwhar Raajhaa, Maitreyan will not stay in any political party permanently, says Palaniswami

Taking a dig at former AIADMK leaders who quit the party to join the DMK recently, Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday (August 13, 2025) said that former party leaders A. Anwhar Raajhaa and V. Maitreyan will not stay in any political party permanently. Mr. Palaniswami's reaction comes in the wake of Mr. Maitreyan, former AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP, joining the DMK on Wednesday in the presence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at Anna Arivalayam, Chennai. Soon, Mr. Palaniswami announced Mr. Maitreyan's expulsion from the party. 'In a democratic country, any leader can join any political party. They [Mr. Raajhaa and Mr. Maitreyan] have not stayed in any political party permanently. Only we [AIADMK] know what happened within the party for their exit,' he said. The AIADMK general secretary was speaking to reporters in Tirupattur as part of his State-wide tour. In July, Mr. Raajhaa, who was formerly the Minister for Labour in the AIADMK government from 2001 to 2003, joined the DMK in the presence of Mr. Stalin in Chennai. The former Chief Minister indicated that more like-minded political parties will join the AIADMK-BJP-led front in the State in the coming months, ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls. He insisted that the coalition led by him will be the deciding authority on which political party should be in their alliance. Further, the AIADMK leader strongly opposed the United States imposing a 50% tariff on Indian imports. 'We are completely against the tariff imposed on Indian goods by the U.S. The Centre should take constructive steps to resolve the issue amicably,' he said.
