Sarawak Formulates Master Plan To Drive Strategic Port Development In The State
KUCHING, May 20 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development is currently formulating a comprehensive Sarawak Port Master Plan to provide strategic direction for port development across the state, in line with the cluster growth policy for the northern, central, and southern regions. Its Deputy Minister, Datuk Majang Renggi, said a port advisor and a task force have been appointed to lead the development of the master plan, gathering input from key stakeholders and benchmarking against international best practices. Replying to a question from Johnny Pang Leong Ming (GPS-Tanjong Batu) at the Sarawak Assembly sitting here, today, Majang said the role of the port advisor and taskforce was also to ensure that the state ports are well-positioned to drive long-term economic development and enhance regional competitiveness. 'The master plan will outline strategic initiatives and development priorities upon its completion and will be aligned with the roles of the forthcoming Sarawak Port Authority. This aims to streamline port governance by consolidating the functions of existing port authorities under a single centralised entity," he said. He said the ministry will engage closely with key stakeholders, including state agencies, existing port authorities, terminal operators and industry players to ensure the master plan reflects the unique role and requirements of each port. He added that this engagement, along with data analysis and site assessment, will help tailor development strategies that are both locally responsive and regionally competitive. To a supplementary question from Pang, Majang said the proposed new Sarawak Port Authority (SARPA), established following the passing of the Sarawak Ports Authority Bill, 2024, will serve as the central regulatory body for all ports across the state, replacing the current individual port authorities. 'SARPA will have ownership of the Sarawak Port Master Plan and have responsibility for policy making, the regulation, and to harmonise development efforts, and ensure consistent governance, efficiency and align with Sarawak's long-term economic goals,' he added. -- BERNAMA

MIRI (May 15): A multi-faith blessing ceremony was held in Kuala Baram today to commemorate the progress of the RM208.9-million Baram Delta Miri Access Channel dredging and deepening project. The event brought together religious leaders and community representatives in a gesture of unity, spiritual reflection, and shared aspirations for the project's success. The ceremony began with a 'doa selamat' led by Imam Ismawi Hashim of Masjid Nurul Iman, Kampung Masjid, followed by Christian prayers led by Reverend Dato Dr Justin Wan. An Iban 'miring' ritual, performed by Sulang Runtuh from Tatau, represented the indigenous community's cultural blessings. A Taoist prayer ceremony would be held at a later date. Sarawak Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi officiated the event on behalf of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. Also in attendance were residents of Kampung Masjid and Kampung Muhibbah, Miri Port Authority (MPA) officials led by general manager Serawa Budol, contractor representatives, community leaders, and MPA chairman Dato Paulus Palu Gumbang along with board members. In his speech delivered by Majang, Uggah underscored the importance of cultural and spiritual inclusivity, highlighting the ceremony as a reflection of Sarawak's diverse yet unified society. 'This diversity in prayer reflects not just the multicultural fabric of Sarawak, but also our shared beliefs in the power of faith – regardless of religion – to bless our work, strengthen unity, and guide us toward our goals,' he said. The dredging and deepening project, spearheaded by MPA, commenced in July last year and is currently ahead of schedule. Phase one is expected to be completed by March 2027. The initiative is part of the state government's long-term strategy to enhance port capacity, improve regional trade connectivity, and deliver socio-economic benefits to Miri and its surrounding areas. Deputy Minister: Sustainability goes beyond environment, also covers socio-economy
Majang hails Bintulu Port as leading the efforts in environmental stewardship by protecting marine biodiversity, reducing water pollution, and implementing robust environmental practices in port operations. – Photo from Sarawak Public Communications Unit BINTULU (April 29): Sustainability is not just about protecting the environment, but is also about building resilience, securing economic stability, and safeguarding the well-being of future generations. In highlighting this, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Dato Majang Renggi pointed out that Sarawak's vision is clear – to strike a balance of economic growth, environmental responsibility, and also social inclusivity. 'At the heart of this transformation lies our port industry, which plays a pivotal role in advancing this vision,' he said at the launch of the 'Customer Centric Centre (CCC) and Sustainability Initiatives' in Wisma Kontena of Bintulu Port in Tanjong Kidurong yesterday. According to Majang, Sarawak has long been 'celebrated' for its rich biodiversity, abundant natural resources and immense economic potential. 'Yet, we remain acutely aware of the opportunities that lie ahead in a world transitioning toward a low-carbon economy,' said the Samalaju assemblyman. He also pointed out that the Sarawak government, under the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, had made a strong commitment to sustainable development, placing sustainability at the core of its future growth. 'One of the key pillars of this strategy is the transition to clean energy. 'Sarawak is determined to become a regional leader in renewable energy, leveraging our vast hydropower resources to fuel green industries. 'In this regard, our ports are crucial drivers of progress. 'As gateways to trade and economic activity, they must align with Sarawak's green agenda by reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and embracing smart technologies.' On Bintulu Port, Majang said it had taken commendable strides in digitalising its operations, reducing inefficiencies, and integrating low-emission mobility solutions such as electric vehicles (EVs), e-buggies, and alternative fuel-powered equipment. 'Beyond infrastructure, Bintulu Port is leading the efforts in environmental stewardship by protecting marine biodiversity, reducing water pollution, and implementing robust environmental practices in port operations. 'Its initiatives demonstrate that growth and conservation can go hand in hand.' lead Majang Renggi port industry socio-economic sustainability
