Sarawak Formulates Master Plan To Drive Strategic Port Development In The State
KUCHING, May 20 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development is currently formulating a comprehensive Sarawak Port Master Plan to provide strategic direction for port development across the state, in line with the cluster growth policy for the northern, central, and southern regions.
Its Deputy Minister, Datuk Majang Renggi, said a port advisor and a task force have been appointed to lead the development of the master plan, gathering input from key stakeholders and benchmarking against international best practices.
Replying to a question from Johnny Pang Leong Ming (GPS-Tanjong Batu) at the Sarawak Assembly sitting here, today, Majang said the role of the port advisor and taskforce was also to ensure that the state ports are well-positioned to drive long-term economic development and enhance regional competitiveness.
'The master plan will outline strategic initiatives and development priorities upon its completion and will be aligned with the roles of the forthcoming Sarawak Port Authority. This aims to streamline port governance by consolidating the functions of existing port authorities under a single centralised entity," he said.
He said the ministry will engage closely with key stakeholders, including state agencies, existing port authorities, terminal operators and industry players to ensure the master plan reflects the unique role and requirements of each port.
He added that this engagement, along with data analysis and site assessment, will help tailor development strategies that are both locally responsive and regionally competitive.
To a supplementary question from Pang, Majang said the proposed new Sarawak Port Authority (SARPA), established following the passing of the Sarawak Ports Authority Bill, 2024, will serve as the central regulatory body for all ports across the state, replacing the current individual port authorities.
'SARPA will have ownership of the Sarawak Port Master Plan and have responsibility for policy making, the regulation, and to harmonise development efforts, and ensure consistent governance, efficiency and align with Sarawak's long-term economic goals,' he added.

Govt's Progress Real, Not Due to Weak Opposition
PADANG RENGAS: Opposition leaders should accept reality and stop making excuses to deny the various positive changes and benefits currently being implemented by the government, said the Finance Minister's political secretary Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim. He dismissed claims that the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister, merely looks strong because the opposition is weak. On the contrary, he said the strength of the MADANI Government stems from the hard work of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, as well as the unique multi-ethnic composition of its component parties, all working towards a better future for the country. 'The government has planned various initiatives and strategies, including programmes aimed at laying a strong foundation to revitalise the nation's economy and improve the people's well-being. 'We are not saying everything is perfect, but the government is making efforts to introduce clear policies to enhance public well-being in various areas such as the quality of education, healthcare and equitable direct assistance to the people,' he said. He said this when met by Bernama at the Korban Perdana MADANI Programme and Kenduri Rakyat for the Padang Rengas parliamentary constituency at the Dewan Terbuka Masjid Al-Taufiqiyah Chuar Kati here today. Muhammad Kamil said Anwar and the Cabinet are fully committed to improving the country's economic performance while maintaining political stability. 'We can see the indicators today — such as economic growth, unemployment rate, poverty level, inflation, trade and investment, as well as the country's fiscal position. 'The unemployment rate is stable, and poverty and inflation rates have declined. The Gross Domestic Product and total trade are both expanding, showing that our country is now on the right track,' he said. He added that these achievements prove the effectiveness of the MADANI Government's economic policies and governance in ensuring inclusive and resilient development.

Ringgit flat against greenback ahead of US-China trade talks
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit traded in a narrow range against the US dollar on Monday amid cautious sentiment in the currency market ahead of US-China trade talks set to take place later today, said an analyst. At 6pm, the local note made a small retreat to 4.2290/2345 against the greenback compared to Friday's close of 4.2270/2360. Market participants were awaiting the outcome of the trade negotiation between the two economic superpowers, said the analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that China's exports fell to 4.8 per cent in May from 8.1 per cent in the previous month, with exports to the United States contracting 34.5 per cent in May from a contraction of 21 per cent. "This suggests that the tariff shocks have taken a toll on bilateral (trade) between the United States and China," he told Bernama Meanwhile, Mohd Afzanizam said Bank Negara Malaysia's FX reserves continued to expand, climbing to US$119.6 billion at the end of May from US$119.1 billion in the middle of May. "This suggests that the flow of funds on the ringgit has been constructive and may have supported the ringgit," he added. At the close, the ringgit traded lower against a basket of major currencies. It eased against the Japanese yen to 2.9344/2.9384 from Friday's 2.9324/9390, depreciated versus the British pound to 5.7392/7466 from 5.7212/7334 and fell vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8316/8379 from 4.8268/8371. The local currency traded mixed against most of its ASEAN peers. It fell versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2908/2953 from 3.2862/2934 but gained against the Thai baht to 12.9414/9642 from 12.9599/9947 on Friday. The domestic unit advanced vis-à-vis the Philippine peso to 7.57/7.59 from 7.58/7.60 but was almost flat against the Indonesian rupiah at 259.5/260.0 from 259.5/260.2 previously.

Delegates from Umno divisions, Wanita, Youth and Puteri arrive for party divisional delegates' meeting
KUALA LUMPUR: Delegates from Umno Divisions, Wanita, Youth, and Puteri have begun to gather for the Umno Divisional Delegates' Meetings starting today until July 27. Umno president and deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in a Facebook post, urged party members to make this conference a platform to strengthen political communication, renew promises, and reinforce determination. "Let this conference be a platform for us to strengthen the three political approaches I outlined previously: Politics of Solution, Politics of Legacy, and Politics of Moderation. "This is the foundation of our struggle that needs to be translated into every action, decision, and effort at all party levels," he said. The Bagan Datuk member of parliament also wished Umno members a successful conference, reminding them that the party must continue to amplify the voice of the people, empathise with the anxieties and aspirations of the youth, and stand strong as a party that is rearing to move forward, even as times change. "Our strength lies not only in our historical heritage but in the unity of our hearts and the clarity of direction we uphold together. "I believe that as long as there is sincerity in togetherness, and as long as this struggle is carried out with a pure spirit, Umno will continue to flourish as a vessel of hope for the people and a pillar of stability and national progress," he said. Previously, the Umno Branch Conferences were held from April 7 to May 25, 2025, while the Umno General Assembly is scheduled to take place from Aug 20 to 23, 2025. – Bernama
