Sarawak Formulates Master Plan To Drive Strategic Port Development In The State

Barnama20-05-2025
KUCHING, May 20 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development is currently formulating a comprehensive Sarawak Port Master Plan to provide strategic direction for port development across the state, in line with the cluster growth policy for the northern, central, and southern regions.
Its Deputy Minister, Datuk Majang Renggi, said a port advisor and a task force have been appointed to lead the development of the master plan, gathering input from key stakeholders and benchmarking against international best practices.
Replying to a question from Johnny Pang Leong Ming (GPS-Tanjong Batu) at the Sarawak Assembly sitting here, today, Majang said the role of the port advisor and taskforce was also to ensure that the state ports are well-positioned to drive long-term economic development and enhance regional competitiveness.
'The master plan will outline strategic initiatives and development priorities upon its completion and will be aligned with the roles of the forthcoming Sarawak Port Authority. This aims to streamline port governance by consolidating the functions of existing port authorities under a single centralised entity," he said.
He said the ministry will engage closely with key stakeholders, including state agencies, existing port authorities, terminal operators and industry players to ensure the master plan reflects the unique role and requirements of each port.
He added that this engagement, along with data analysis and site assessment, will help tailor development strategies that are both locally responsive and regionally competitive.
To a supplementary question from Pang, Majang said the proposed new Sarawak Port Authority (SARPA), established following the passing of the Sarawak Ports Authority Bill, 2024, will serve as the central regulatory body for all ports across the state, replacing the current individual port authorities.
'SARPA will have ownership of the Sarawak Port Master Plan and have responsibility for policy making, the regulation, and to harmonise development efforts, and ensure consistent governance, efficiency and align with Sarawak's long-term economic goals,' he added.

Malaysia's automotive TIV higher by 28% in July

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's automotive sector total industry volume (TIV) jumped 28 per cent to 70,057 units in July, compared to 54,863 units in June 2025, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). It said In a statement that the higher TIV was attributed to a full working month of 23 working days, compared to June 2025 (19 working days), and low production base in June 2025 due to the Hari Raya Aidiladha shutdown. However, MAA reported that the year-to-date (YTD) TIV was 5.0 per cent lower than the same corresponding period in 2024. "On a year-on-year basis, the TIV for July 2025 was 5.0 per cent lower than the 73,501 units recorded a year earlier, with 64,438 passenger vehicles and 5,619 commercial vehicles sold. "For production, a total of 71,439 units were produced in July 2025, up by 1.0 per cent from a year earlier comprising 67,075 passenger vehicles and 4,364 commercial vehicles," it said. On the industry's outlook, MAA expected the sales momentum in July 2025 to continue in August 2025. It said the performance in August would be driven by higher stock availability supported by July's high production volume of 71,439 units, aggressive promotion in conjunction with the Merdeka month celebration, and sales impact from new model launches. - Bernama

Justice should be a birthright for all, not a privilege for the few

She emphasised the urgency of reform in a world where 4.5 billion people remain excluded from legal protections, highlighting the need to strengthen Malaysia's commitment to fairness and equality under the law. 19 Aug 2025 03:04pm Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said speaks at a press conference after launching the Asean Law Forum 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today. Photo by Bernama KUALA LUMPUR - Justice must never be a privilege reserved for a few but upheld as the birthright of all, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. She emphasised the urgency of reform in a world where 4.5 billion people remain excluded from legal protections, highlighting the need to strengthen Malaysia's commitment to fairness and equality under the law. "As Nelson Mandela reminded us that a nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones. Today, in a world where 4.5 billion people remain excluded from legal protections, our mission is urgent. "We cannot allow justice to be a privilege of the few-it must be the birthright of all,' she said in her speech at the Asean Law Forum 2025, themed Enhancing Access to Justice in the Asean Economic Community: Bridging Legal Cooperation for Inclusive Growth in the Digital Age at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today. Photo by Bernama Azalina stated that, according to the World Justice Project, around 1.5 billion people are unable to resolve their civil, administrative, or criminal legal issues, and 253 million people live in conditions of extreme injustice, victims of statelessness, modern slavery, and high levels of insecurity. "Malaysia has made encouraging progress. From 2016 to 2023, our rule of law improved by 5.1 per cent, placing us among the top-performing countries in this area. "However, the global picture is less optimistic. Between 2023 and 2024, the rule of law declined in 57 per cent of countries. This means that today, 6.3 billion people live in countries where the rule of law has deteriorated,' she said. Meanwhile, Azalina said the Government is undertaking major reforms to Malaysia's commercial law framework, beginning with a comprehensive review of the Contract Act 1950. "Working closely with academia, legal experts, industry players, and civil society, we are addressing key areas such as unfair terms, cyber law, and digital transactions. "At the same time, we are reviewing other core laws, including the Sale of Goods Act, to ensure our legal system remains relevant, business-friendly, and able to support innovation and global trade," she added. Also present at the opening of the Asean Law Forum 2025 were Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran, Legal Affairs Division director-general Datuk Zamri Misman and United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) secretary Anna Joubin-Bret. The three-day forum brought together 58 speakers and moderators in 15 expert-led sessions, attended by over 300 participants from Asean and beyond, covering discussions over alternative dispute resolution, commercial law reforms, as well as business and human rights. - BERNAMA More Like This
