A police officer who is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car while on duty has been named by Thames Valley Police as Pc Christopher Miller.
The 38-year-old sustained 'life-threatening injuries' on Thursday at around 10.20pm on the B416 Bells Hill, between Decies Way and Rogers Lane in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire.
Travelling on foot, he collided with a white BMW which failed to stop at the scene, the force has said.
The officer has spent five years with the roads policing unit and has been in the police for 13 years.
His family are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers, as are his closest colleagues, with the investigation into the circumstances of the tragic incident being led by the force's Major Crime Department.
Two men, aged 28 and 38, both from Slough have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and causing serious injury by dangerous driving and remain in custody.
A third man, aged 43, from Slough, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice and has been released on police bail.
Today, a fourth person has been arrested, a 37-year-old woman, from Slough, on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice. She also remains in police custody.
Issuing an urgent appeal for the public's assistance with the investigation, Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Will Crowther said: 'I am today issuing a public appeal for witnesses to come forward and share any information that may help out investigation.
'I would be particularly keen to hear from anybody who was in the area of Stoke Poges between 10pm on Thursday evening until around 1am on Friday morning (23/5) and may have seen this vehicle or witnessed the incident itself.
'I believe the BMW will have had front-end damage after the incident, and so if you saw the vehicle, either before the incident or afterwards, please contact us.
'I am also keen to hear from anyone who may have dash-cam, CCTV or doorbell footage which could have captured anything that could help our investigation.'
Speaking to reporters at the scene, DSI Crowther said: 'We believe that after the collision the BMW will have sustained damage to the front of the car.
'If you saw the vehicle, we urge you to please check your dash-cam, CCTV or doorbell footage which may have captured something that could assist us with this investigation.
'We are conducting an extensive investigation and we are determined to bring those responsible to justice.
'I believe there are people out there that know who is responsible.
'If you know what happened or have information that could help, I urge you to please come forward. You can do so in the strictest of confidence. We need your help.'
Deputy Chief Constable Ben Snuggs said that the force were doing 'all they can' to investigate the circumstances of Pc Miller's 'extremely serious injuries'.
He added: 'Police officers face danger every day. In this incident, PC Christopher Miller was simply doing his job, serving the public and keeping our communities safe.
'All officers should expect to return home safely after each tour of duty, and we wish Christopher a swift and full recovery.
'We have all been affected by this, right across Thames Valley Police. I want to thank our local communities in Slough for all their support and the wider public for the supportive messages we have received.'
Meanwhile, David Moore, Conservative councillor for Farnhams and Stoke Poges, said the local community had been 'shaken' by the devastating collision which has left both residents and councillors 'appalled'.
Councillor Moore added: 'I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn that one of our brave police officers is fighting for his life following this horrific incident.
'My thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones at this incredibly difficult time, and I wish him a full and swift recovery.
'I urge anyone with information to come forward and support Thames Valley Police's investigation so that justice can be served.'
