Glasgow dream for 'new museum' one step closer for community champions
A community-led board has been established, explains Louise Nolan of Make It Glasgow, a driving force behind the ambitious project. 'The plan is to have it open by 2029, so there is a long way to go but it's really exciting to have the board in place,' she says. Make It Glasgow founders Louise and Ruth Impey were given the Lord Provost's Special Recognition trophy at last year's Glasgow Community Champion Awards. As the Glasgow Times, in association with Vertu and supported by Glasgow City Council and Allied Vehicles Charitable Trust, launches the 2025 awards, Louise says winning in 2024 was a fantastic boost. 'It has been a whirlwind of a year for us since then, the support and coverage it generated just opened so many doors for us,' she says. 'I think the awards plant the seeds in people's heads about what's really possible in this city." Louise adds: 'To be a member of the audience hearing about all these brilliant things that people are doing, quietly just getting on with it, was really amazing.' Pam Duncan-Glancy praises Glasgow Tool Library initiative
Pam Duncan-Glancy, MSP for the Glasgow region, visited the Glasgow Tool Library in Maryhill on Monday, June 9, to learn about the work underway to make equipment accessible to everyone. The Glasgow Tool Library operates by lending members expensive equipment, such as power tools and camping gear, in exchange for a small membership fee. (Image: Supplied) The equipment, 99% of which is donated, forms a circular economy that makes equipment available to the community and reduces waste. The MSP presented a framed parliamentary motion to the Glasgow Tool Library, congratulating its contribution to revamping a rundown portacabin for Make It Glasgow, a North Glasgow project teaching skills through clay projects. "The Glasgow Tool Library is a great example of the community coming together to help each other." Chris Strachan, co-founder of the Glasgow Tool Library, said: "Our staff and volunteers put so much energy and passion into community build projects in support of other grassroots organisations across Glasgow, so we were delighted when Pam championed the initiative in parliament. "We jumped at the chance to show Pam around our base in Firhill, and to discuss our ambitious plans to provide even more equipment, training, and community ties for North Glasgow's residents. "Pam's enthusiasm for our vision is a great motivator to continue building the future of the service."
