Rs 67 Lakh For A Tesla? India Says, ‘Nice Car, Bro, But Will It Float?'
Last Updated: Many people said the cars are too expensive and self-driving won't work well on India's busy roads. Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with its first showroom in Mumbai, located at Maker Maxity in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The company has plans for a second outlet in Delhi and has already posted multiple job openings across India. Tesla is also setting up supercharger networks in key cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru. According to Hindustan Times, the showroom features the Model Y in both Long-Range RWD and AWD versions, with deliveries expected to begin in August. These electric vehicles are being imported as completely built units (CBUs). Due to India's high import duties—up to 70 per cent—their prices range between Rs 59.9 lakh and Rs 67.9 lakh. While Tesla fans were excited, many Indians on X (formerly Twitter) weren't too thrilled. The steep prices and India's unpredictable roads, along with traffic conditions, became the subject of jokes, memes and sarcastic posts. A user wrote, 'Rs 60 lakh and a 500 km range. Mahindra, Tata, Hyundai — they are more suited for Indian roads. And don't even talk about self-driving here. You are not safe even when you are driving manually." Another post showed a video of a car floating through a flooded street with the caption, 'Tesla is ready for Indian monsoon," poking fun at how unsuitable the car might be for local weather conditions. A funny clip of a man rapping in English while playing a dhol was captioned, 'Tesla cars on Indian roads be like…" capturing the chaos of blending advanced tech with unpredictable road scenarios. An individual sarcastically pointed out, 'Tesla just launched in India. It is priced nearly double compared to other countries." Tesla just launched in India. It's priced nearly 2x compared to other countries. — amrit (@amritwt) July 15, 2025 In addition, memes were everywhere. One showed two people in a wrecked car with the caption, 'Coming back after riding Tesla on self-driving mode in India." *Tesla launched in India*Coming back after riding Tesla on self-driving mode in India — Pakchikpak Raja Babu (@HaramiParindey) July 15, 2025 Another joked, 'After one month with Tesla in India: Reporter – How are you feeling here? Tesla: curses" After one month with Tesla in India:Reporter: How are you feeling here? Tesla: — Shubham Sakhuja (@ishubhamsakhuja) July 15, 2025 Some users also criticised those who expected an affordable Tesla. 'I wonder who thought Tesla would cost Rs 20-25 lakh in India. Absolute jokers," one said. I wonder who are these people (clueless) who really thought Tesla cars in India are going to be around 20-25 lakh. Absolute jokers!— ︎︎︎ ︎ (@Shimographer) July 15, 2025 While Tesla's entry is seen as a premium move, online reactions show that Indians are not holding back their opinions—and memes—about the brand's high price and practicality here. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Tesla Model Y launched in India for Rs 59.89 lakh: Full price breakdown, specs, and showroom location
Tesla, the Elon Musk-owned electric vehicle manufacturer, marked its entry in the Indian market on Tuesday, July 15, by opening its first showroom in Mumbai. Located in Maker Maxity mall at the Bandra Kurla Complex, the city's leading commercial business district, the company has also set up a service centre and warehouse around six kilometres away from the showroom. The first car by the EV maker that will be coming to the Indian market is the Model Y, a mid-range luxury electric vehicle that will be available in two variants. It is reportedly being imported from the company's Shanghai factory. In the United States, the long-range RWD version of the car starts from $37,490 or approximately Rs 32,18,900, which is almost half the price of the Indian variant. This might be because Tesla might be incurring a hefty 70 per cent import duty. However, this might eventually decrease if the company plans to locally assemble its cars in the country. Speculations also suggest that Tesla is planning to open its next store in Delhi, but currently, there are no details on when that might happen. According to Tesla, the rear-wheel drive (RWD) version of the Model Y has an ex-showroom price of Rs 59,89,000, while the long-range RWD edition has an ex-showroom price of Rs 67,89,000. In case you are wondering, the main difference between the two variants is that the Model Y RWD offers a range of up to 500km on a single charge, while the long-range variant has a range of 622 km. The Model Y has a top speed of 201 kmph. While the RWD variant can go from 0-100 kmph in 5.9 seconds, the long-range RWD version goes from 0-100 kmph in just 5.6 seconds. Tesla is selling the Model Y in six colourways – Stealth Grey, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Quick Silver and Ultra Red. However, the above-mentioned ex-showroom price of the Model Y is for the Stealth Grey colourway only, and you will have to pay extra for the other colours. Tesla also allows buyers to choose from 'All black' and 'Black and White' interiors, but for the latter, you will have to pay Rs 95,000 more. Another thing to note is that the Indian version of the Model Y currently does not have self-driving capability, and you will have to pay Rs 6 lakh to get the feature when it is available in the country. Tesla is also offering finance options with instalments for the Rear-Wheel Drive and the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive starting from Rs 1,14,098 and Rs 1,29,193, respectively. For the RWD and the long-range RWD version, you will have to make downpayments of Rs 6,20,314 and Rs 7,01,115, respectively. The first row of the Tesla Model Y comes with power recline, heated and ventilated seats, and the second row has powered two-way folding and heated seats. It comes with a huge 15.4-inch touchscreen-enabled infotainment system on the front, along with an 8-inch touchscreen in the second row. The inside of the car has a footwell and door pocket ambient lighting, along with aluminium detailing. You also get a hands-free power open on approach for the trunk with a decent-sized front trunk. Talking of safety, the Model Y comes with industry-standard features like automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind spot collision warning, and lane departure avoidance, to name a few. You also get 'Dashcam and Sentry Mode' that automatically records while driving and notifies the owner of any suspicious behaviour when the car is parked. Tesla is providing a 4-year or 80,000km warranty, whichever is earlier, on the entire vehicle. Meanwhile, the battery and drive unit come with an 8-year or 1,92,000km warranty, whichever is earlier.
