Mandela Day inspires learners to help storm-hit senior
Anny Zwane, known as 'Makhumalo' from Ezidulini, was one of many residents left reeling after severe storms struck the area in January. However, help arrived when Masakhane Soul Buddies stepped in to assist the senior citizen by replacing the damaged roof of her home.
The learners, from Khawuleza Primary School, were moved to step in upon seeing the damage to Makhumalo's home.
The Soul Buddies took it upon themselves to find sponsors and people who might lend a helping hand to Gogo Makhumalo.
Accompanied by their educator, Miss Lihle, the group visited Gogo Makhumalo on Mandela Day (July 18), telling her of their plan to assist her in having the roof repaired.
However, because the house is old and in poor condition, it was realised that a new roof would not help.
Showing their initiative, the Soul Buddies identified a second hut on the property, which they cleaned and prepared before taking Gogo Makhumalo's belongings to the refurbished space.
The project sparked interest from others to assist with Mondlo Super Spar in handing over food parcels. Mr Cebekhulu donated 15 sheets of roofing, while educators and learners from other schools, including Goqo Primary School, joined in to assist.
Expressing appreciation, Gogo Makhumalo described the children as 'God-sent'.
'They have really helped me because I am old now and I have health issues, so at times I cannot do anything for myself. I am so grateful.''
The Soul Buddies team and their educator thanked everyone who took their time to help, including Mondlo Super Spar, Hlahlindlela Taxi Association, Khawuleza Principal, SADTU and other small business forums.
