'The Wire' actor says his son was critically injured in Georgia tornado
ATLANTA – Actor Tray Chaney, known for his role in "The Wire," said that his son was seriously injured when he was thrown 300 feet from his room as a tornado barreled through their Henry County, Georgia, home on Thursday. The tornado touched down just before 4 p.m. local time outside the community of Locust Grove, which sits southeast of Atlanta. There, Chaney, his wife and son had a home they moved into only five years ago in 2020, according to the actor. "I lost my house, I lost everything in it," Chaney said in a tearful video posted on his Instagram page, showing the damage and giving an update on his family's survival. "Thank God I'm still living. I survived a tornado and my son - and he survived… I'm doing a video to let you know right now to cherish life as much as you can." Chaney noted in a separate Instagram post that he became unconscious during the storm, buried underneath debris from his home. As he regained consciousness, he was unable to find his son, Malachi. With the help of his neighbors, Chaney said he was able to locate Malachi 300 feet away in the woods behind their home with serious injuries. He was brought to the intensive care unit of a hospital, where he remains as of Friday afternoon, Chaney said on Instagram. "The worst pain of my entire life as a father watching my Son in this hospital bed in so much pain!" Chaney wrote on Instagram. "Take the house, take the money, take the cars all the material things I just want my Son back in great health like he was." Tornado Rips Through Georgia Neighborhood, Critically Injuring 18-Year-old Henry County Police Deputy Chief Jason Bolton told FOX 5 Atlanta that residents did not have much warning ahead of time. "The first call came in around 3:32 p.m., and that was right about the same time that we received warning from the National Weather Center," Bolton said. "The 18-year-old is in critical condition and has been taken to Grady (Memorial Hospital)." How To Watch Fox Weather The National Weather Service issued a rating of Ef-2 for the Henry County tornado. The agency said the tornado had estimated peak winds of 135 mph and a path measuring about 200 yards wide and nearly 2 miles long. The Wire star Tray Chaney has one message for fans after losing his Atlanta home in a tornado that also left his teenage son seriously injured: "Cherish life as much as you can." In a video posted to his Instagram account on Thursday, Chaney stood in front of the remains of his home and explained to fans what happened. "I just got out the hospital. I'm getting ready to go see my son in the ICU. At 3 p.m. today, a tornado came through Henry County, Locust Grove, Atlanta. I lost my house. I lost everything in it. Thank God I'm still living. I survived a tornado. My son, he survived," he continued, choking up. "I'm doing the video to let y'all know to cherish life. Cherish life as much as you can." In a second statement, Chaney gave more details about the tornado's destruction, which left him unconscious and threw his 18-year-old son, Malachi, hundreds of feet. "I was unconscious on the ground with my face in the mud with parts of my house on top of me," Chaney wrote in the post. "I woke up in a panic, crawled from under my house screaming my son's name out. My neighbors were there to assist me and finally we found my son 300 feet away in the woods behind my house. Malachai is in the hospital fighting and me and my wife have not and will not leave his side." The actor played Malik "Poot" Carr, a drug dealer working for Avon Barksdale (Wood Harris), for five seasons on the critically acclaimed HBO drama, The Wire. In his Instagram post, Chaney revealed that he and Malachi had appeared on an Atlanta radio program with The Wire actress Felicia Pearson, who played Snoop, the day before the devastating tornado. A GoFundMe page for Chaney and his family has already raised more than $12,000 to help with rebuilding costs. In subsequent posts, the actor shared an update on Malachi's condition, saying, "The swelling on his face is finally starting to go down." Still, Chaney noted that his son has "a long journey to recovery ahead," adding in his latest update, "The worst pain of my entire life as a father [is] watching my son in this hospital bed in so much pain." In a statement posted in a follow-up Instagram, Chaney recalled that he was unconscious on the ground after the tornado struck, with mud on his face and parts of the home on top of him. 'I woke up in a panic crawled from under my house screaming my son's name out,' he wrote. 'My neighbors were there to assist me & finally we found my son 300 feet away in the woods behind my house.' He further wrote that Malachi is in the hospital and that he and his wife have not left their son's side. He said he sustained a bruise on his head from the incident and just returned from the hospital. 'I wish I could replace the pain with my son," he added. "I wish he was the one doing the video and I was still at [the] ICU.' He thanks God for sparing his life, adding, 'That s--- ain't no movie.' 'It almost sounded like thunder and lightning, but it had more of an impact like shaking walls, you know, I mean terrifying,' Andreal Mallard, a neighbor, told the outlet. ‘The Wire' actor says his son was ‘thrown 300 feet' during Henry County tornado
An 18-year-old remains in the intensive care unit after a tornado destroyed his family's home in Henry County. The family identified him as Malachi Chaney. He told Channel 2 Action News on Friday morning that Malachi has several broken ribs and a fractured bone in his face. "I wish it was me that was in ICU rather than him. I don't want him experiencing no pain," Tray Chaney wrote in an emailed statement. Chaney also posted a video on his Instagram page detailing the harrowing experience. 'My son was thrown 300 feet out of his room,' he said. The National Weather Service will have survey teams out in Henry County on Friday.
