Trees replace waste pile at STP, NGT closes case
Noida: The
National Green Tribunal
(NGT) has disposed of a case on waste dumping at Madhuban Bapudham STP after the Ghaziabad civic body confirmed the garbage was cleared within a year and replaced with plantations.
About 61,000 metric tonnes of waste had been dumped in the open residential area of the society by GMC last year at the site in question, owing to the lack of road access to the processing site due to the Kanwar Yatra. Disturbed by the filth and stench, the society filed an application with NGT on Aug 17, 2024, seeking a direction to the corporation. The matter was disposed of by the tribunal on Aug 5 after being apprised of the remedial measures.
The GMC, in its affidavit filed on July 26, stated, "Pursuant to the directions of this Tribunal and in discharge of our municipal responsibilities, the Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam has fully cleared all solid waste from the site in question. As of today, no waste remains deposited at the site. After the clearance of the waste, the land has been restored and further developed by the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA). The GDA, in collaboration with Nature Monks Foundation, has undertaken and commenced Miyawaki Plantation on the said site to ensure ecological restoration.

Malak Bhatt and advocate Samridhi, counsels to the civic body, added that the land is under the jurisdiction of the GDA and is not owned by the GMC. "The corporation has not made any use of the land post-clearance of the waste," the counsel said, adding that "no further waste dumping will take place on the said land and that in future, alternate arrangements will be made in case of similar exigencies, in coordination with GDA and other concerned authorities.

The principal bench of the tribunal, comprising chairperson Justice Prakash Srivastava and expert member Dr A Senthil Vel, noted that both GMC and UPPCB filed their replies in response to the notices issued to them by the tribunal on Aug 27, 2024.
The GMC commissioner in his Dec 3 response wrote, "Out of the said waste, 29,287 metric tonnes were already lifted and shifted to the Bhikanpur processing site, and the remaining balance of 31,713 metric tonnes is expected to be shifted and disposed of by Jan 2025."
As the applicant expressed satisfactory redressal of his grievance, the tribunal decided to dispose of the original application 1090/2024 with a direction to the GMC to ensure that no further dumping of waste in the open is done.
