Malaysia Athletics deputy president hauled up over misappropriation of funds claims
Malaysia Athletics deputy president, Datuk Fadzil A. Bakar, received a show-cause letter from the national body yesterday following his comments to the media alleging misappropriation of funds in the organisation. Fadzil replied to the show-cause letter the same day, justifying his comments. It is understood that Fadzil has been hauled up to explain himself at an emergency council meeting at Wisma OCM in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon. Fadzil had last week told Twentytwo13 that a special committee was set up on July 29, 2024, to 'review the expenses for the Malam Anugerah Olahraga Malaysia 2024 (Awards Night)'. The committee wanted to know why a member had asked to be reimbursed RM18,610 as payment for the venue when a sponsor had already paid the hotel, located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, in full. The committee also said the member did not follow the 'laws and regulations made under Rule 18, Clause 11', which states that all financial activities require approval from the finance committee. He added that the committee recommended the council member face the disciplinary board and explain the expenses, but 'the president ignored it'. Malaysia Athletics president, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, on Feb 25 denied allegations of misappropriation of funds within the national body. Shahidan also said that he was the one who stopped the payment to the council member, as he wanted to ensure there was no issue with the claims.

Malaysia Athletics: Shahidan Kassim silent on deputy's fate, AGM likely in April
Malaysia Athletics' emergency council meeting this afternoon ended with a whimper as president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (main image) kept mum on whether the association would take any action against his deputy, Datuk Fadzil A. Bakar. Fadzil received a show-cause letter yesterday for speaking to the press, giving him 24 hours to respond, but he replied the same day. He attended today's emergency council meeting but walked out as he felt it was a waste of time. The show-cause letter came after Fadzil told Twentytwo13 last week that a special committee was set up on July 29, 2024, to 'review the expenses for the Malam Anugerah Olahraga Malaysia 2024 (Awards Night)'. After the emergency meeting today, Shahidan evaded repeated questions from journalists about the show-cause letter and his deputy. Asked if the council discussed the letter and his deputy, Shahidan, who is also Arau MP, said: 'It was a normal meeting. 'We discussed many things about the association. What is important is that we wanted to assure the sponsors that nothing untoward happened. The sponsors are happy, and we are happy.' Shahidan then added: 'We will have another meeting on March 6 to finalise the date for the AGM. I would prefer it to be in April.' Malaysia Athletics has until June 30 to call for the AGM. Shahidan had on Wednesday denied any misappropriation of funds as the payment was made to the council member and promised stern action if there were any wrongdoings. Fadzil today said: 'I walked out of the meeting as it was a waste of time. I leave it up to them to decide my fate. I'm fed up'. But expect things to heat up on March 6 at the next council meeting to decide the date of the AGM. There are moves to nominate Datuk Wira Mark Ling of Sarawak to challenge Shahidan. When approached, Ling joked: 'You want to back me? I'm happy where I am at the moment. Come and talk to me on the (March) 6.'

Malaysia Athletics courts more drama with allegations of financial misappropriation
Malaysia Athletics (MA) deputy president Datuk Fadzil A. Bakar (main image), says the national body is in a mess, and changes are needed for it to become relevant again. He also alleged that the president, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, ignored recommendations to refer a member to the disciplinary board over alleged misappropriation of funds. Fadzil also opposed suggestions that the current office-bearers serve an additional year in line with the amended but yet-to-be-adopted constitution, which extends the office-bearers' terms from three to four years, with a limit of two terms. Previously, it was a maximum of three three-year terms. The amended constitution follows the Malaysia Athletics Federation's name change to Malaysia Athletics on Jan 15. Yesterday, an officer from the Sports Commissioner's Office told Twentytwo13 that the constitutional changes are only supposed to take effect after the annual general meeting (AGM). 'There is no issue with extending the number of years in office, but that should only come after we hold our AGM by June 30. We were elected under the old constitution and should follow that,' said Fadzil, president of the Melaka Athletics Association. 'Most council members are against the extension.' Regarding the alleged misappropriation of funds, Fadzil said a special committee was set up on July 29, 2024, to 'review the expenses for the Malam Anugerah Olahraga Malaysia 2024 (Awards Night)' The committee wanted to know why a member had asked to be reimbursed RM18,610 as payment for the venue when a sponsor had already paid the hotel, located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, in full. The committee also said the member did not follow the 'laws and regulations made under Rule 18, clause 11', which stated that all financial activities needed approval from the finance committee. 'The committee recommended that the council member face the disciplinary board and explain the expenses, but the president ignored it,' claimed Fadzil. Besides being deputy president, Fadzil was appointed to the national body's finance committee in a council meeting on July 2, 2024. But on Dec 10, 2024, the association's organisational chart showed Sallerudin Satar as the new finance chairman. 'I was appointed by the council and have not received any notice of my removal from that position,' said Fadzil. 'The change came after I raised issues regarding the expenses for Malam Anugerah Olahraga Malaysia. 'Honestly, I am fed up. I wanted to quit, but the other council members told me I must not give in. We must fight for what is right. That is why we want the elections to go on so we can clean up the association,' he added. It is understood that Shahidan met Sports Commissioner Suhardi Alias this evening. It remains unclear if the meeting was in relation to the upcoming AGM.
