Malay reserve land in Peninsular Malaysia reaches nearly 5mil hectares

KUALA LUMPUR: The total area of Malay Reserve Land (MRL) in Peninsular Malaysia stood at 4,956,639.26 hectares as of Dec 31 last year, the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry said. The figure was based on records submitted by the respective state authorities, excluding Penang and Melaka, which do not have a Malay Reserve Enactment, the ministry said. "Monitoring of Malay Reserve Land is discussed at the federal level through the National Land Council (MTN) as part of negotiations between the federal and state governments on land matters. "This includes inconsistencies in the enforcement of enactments across states, disruptions to the land replacement process due to development, and challenges in developing land designated as Malay Reserve," the ministry said in a written parliamentary reply. The ministry was responding to a question from Datuk Ahmad Saad @ Yahaya (PN–Pokok Sena) regarding the latest status of Malay Reserve Land in each state and efforts to preserve its status in line with the Malay Reserve Enactment 142. The ministry also said it had taken the initiative to adopt the Malaysia Geospatial Online Services (MyGOS), an online geospatial data-sharing platform for government agencies. "MyGOS serves as a spatial database to assist state authorities in implementing large-scale developments or planning future development, while also helping them manage Malay Reserve Land more systematically," it said.
