Anwar and Prabowo to hold first annual talks as leaders in Indonesia tomorrow, delegation to focus on trade, security, regional ties
JAKARTA, July 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will embark on a two-day working visit to Indonesia starting Monday to attend the 13th Annual Consultation with President Prabowo Subianto — the first such meeting between the two leaders. Anwar will be accompanied by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg; Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor; Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. 'This Annual Consultation represents the highest-level bilateral mechanism between Malaysia and Indonesia, aimed at reinforcing strategic and comprehensive cooperation,' Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin said during a media briefing here on Sunday. He said the Annual Consultation, convened alternately between the two countries since 2006, reflects the strong political commitment of both nations to enhance collaboration across a wide range of sectors, including trade and investment, defence and security, connectivity, food security and education. 'The leaders are expected to exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest,' he said, adding that a Joint Statement will be issued at the conclusion of the consultation. The previous consultation was held in 2017, making this a timely opportunity for both leaders to reaffirm their strategic partnership and explore new areas of cooperation in response to current regional and global challenges. Syed Mohamad Hasrin said the leaders will also witness the exchange of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in the areas of land border, health cooperation and information and communications technology. During the visit, he said the Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, at the invitation of the ASEAN Secretary-General, Dr Kao Kim Hourn. Anwar will also deliver a Policy Speech on ASEAN in the context of Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, underscoring Malaysia's ongoing commitment to regional integration and community-building. In 2024, Indonesia ranked as Malaysia's sixth-largest global trading partner and the second largest within ASEAN. Bilateral trade increased by 4.5 per cent from RM111.21 billion (US$24.39 billion) in 2023 to RM116.29 billion (US$25.5 billion) in 2024. — Bernama

Malaysian evacuees' 1,000km escape from conflict-torn Iran
As night gave way to day along Iran 's uncertain highways, a convoy of Malaysians pressed eastward from the capital, racing against the spectre of violence to reach the safety of the Turkmenistan border. The evacuation of 17 Malaysians from conflict-hit Iran unfolded as a day-long odyssey spanning more than 1,000km (620 miles) as tensions mounted. Among them was Khairi Omar, Malaysia's ambassador to Iran, who called the operation 'challenging but successful' amid the precarious security situation gripping the region. 'Thanks to the close cooperation of the Turkmenistan government, we were allowed entry and proceeded directly to Ashgabat Airport for a connecting flight,' Khairi said on Sunday following the group's return.

Ex-Foreign Ministry sec-gen Muhammad Shahrul Ikram succeeds Nazri Aziz as Malaysia's new ambassador to US
KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, presented the instrument of appointment to the new Malaysian Ambassador to the United States, Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, in a ceremony at Istana Negara today. Muhammad Shahrul Ikram is the former Foreign Ministry's secretary-general. According to a post on Sultan Ibrahim's Facebook page, the ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin and the ministry's secretary-general Datuk Sri Amran Mohamed Zin. Muhammad Shahrul Ikram replaces Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, whose term concluded on Feb 8. The Pahang-born Muhammad Shahrul Ikram holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Ecology from Universiti Malaya and has attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in the US. He started his career as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988 and served as Chairman of the Secretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Jan 6, 2019, to May 31, 2022. Throughout his 35 years in public service, Muhammad Shahrul Ikram has been posted as Malaysian Ambassador to Qatar, Malaysian Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations in New York. While at the Foreign Ministry, he had served as deputy secretary-general (Bilateral Relations), director-general of the Asean-Malaysia National Secretariat (during Malaysia's 2015 ASEAN Chairmanship) and Secretary of the Multilateral Political Division. His other previous diplomatic assignments include the Malaysian missions in Vienna, Washington, and Beijing. — Bernama
