PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from two people over a social media video allegedly mocking the national anthem.
MCMC said the statements were taken at its headquarters yesterday. A mobile phone and a SIM card were also seized.
'We will not compromise with any party that mocks or belittles the national anthem, in line with Section 8 of the National Anthem Act 1968, which requires all citizens to show respect for it,' MCMC said in a statement.
MCMC did not reveal the identity of the two individuals. However, its probe comes two days after a Malaysian Chinese social media 'influencer' apologised for taking out his phone to record a video as the national anthem was being played at an event.
Choo Hao Ren acknowledged that his actions, caught on video in a clip that went viral, were inappropriate and that he should have sung the national anthem solemnly and with respect.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh nevertheless called for punitive action against Choo for disrespecting the national anthem and the country.
