The project, developed by Metadise Sdn Bhd, highlights Sarawak's five tourism pillars – Culture, Nature, Adventure, Food, and Festival (CNAFF) – through an immersive metaverse experience. Speaking at the launch event at The Podium here today, Metadise director Afiq Fadhli Narawi said the platform integrates storytelling, virtual interaction, e-commerce, and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) to offer a modern take on Sarawak's attractions. This is a great opportunity to expose Sarawak to a global audience, he said, noting that the project is currently in its beta stage and has recently secured funding support from the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). 'Users can interact with digital replicas of iconic attractions, including the Darul Hana Bridge, Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Carpenter Street, and the Borneo Cultures Museum, with integrated booking systems and NFT purchasing features in the pipeline,' he elaborated. 'Whether you want to promote an event or replicate a building or a local university in virtual space, the platform offers that flexibility.' Metadise also acts as a digital innovation hub in Kuching, focused on driving technology adoption, immersive learning, and collaboration in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, and metaverse development. He said the ministry aims to empower local creators, strengthen the digital ecosystem, and position Malaysia as a regional powerhouse in digital content. 'Through strategic initiatives such as the Creative Content Fund grants, we are supporting the development and production of high-quality, market-ready content. 'The Digital Ministry, through the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), is also investing in structured programmes that offer training, mentorship, and industry matching, ensuring our local talents are equipped with the skills and guidance they need to succeed,' he said when officiating at the opening of 'Kre8tif! East 2025' at Makeramai Makerspace here today. Ugak said that the ministry is also committed to expanding market access, providing platforms for local content creators to reach regional and international audiences. He said these efforts are in line with Malaysia's ambition to become a digital content hub, with the creative sector projected to contribute over RM31.9 billion to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2025. Meanwhile, Ugak noted that the ministry had, in 2024, conducted the 'Jelajah Malaysia Digital' (JMD) programme across Sarawak to uplift digital skills among underserved communities, including the B40 group, youth, small business owners, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and others. 'This Friday, the Jelajah Malaysia Digital programme will take place in Sarawak, with Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo expected to attend. JMD plays a critical role in further showcasing the rapid growth and strength of Sarawak's digital economy,' he said. Ugak also announced that MDEC will host the Asean Digital Content Summit 2025 this September at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre, alongside the Kre8tif Business Xchange. 'This summit will gather government agencies, industry leaders, academia and the public to foster deeper collaboration and accelerate the development of Asean's digital creative industry. 'This initiative positions Malaysia, and especially our talents from Borneo, at the heart of regional growth,' he said. According to a statement, the two-day Kre8tif! East 2025 event features global industry leaders and experts, offering Sarawak's creative community valuable insights, idea-sharing, and collaboration opportunities. The programme, organised by MDEC and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), includes panel discussions, exhibitions, and strategic networking sessions aimed at fostering growth in the digital creative space. Among the event's key speakers were representatives from Les' Copaque Production, Streamline Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery, Toon2Tango, Polygon Pictures, Ventura Interactive, Scenic, and Algoin Tech. A major highlight was the announcement of a new partnership between Les' Copaque Production and Streamline Studios to develop the Upin & Ipin Universe – an ambitious transmedia project encompassing games, animation, and immersive digital experiences. The initiative marks a bold step toward globalising one of Malaysia's most beloved intellectual properties. A memorandum of understanding was also signed between MDEC and MYTV Broadcasting Malaysia, establishing a national platform to showcase local animation content to wider audiences. Also present were Sarawak Deputy Minister of Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan and SDEC chief executive officer Dato Sudarnoto Osman.

Gobind: MDEC offering RM1.5b in financial aid, but talent shortage hindering MSMEs from going digital

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 -- Talent shortage is one of the major challenges faced by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) when trying to take their businesses online, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh today. He said Putrajaya is now offering around RM1.5 billion in funds to help MSMEs digitise their business, but there is a lack of know-how to fully utilise the financial aid. 'Many business owners understand how the pandemic affected them, but they still haven't fully adapted to technology. 'The question is, why is there a lack of adoption, and how do we deal with it? One key issue we identified is a lack of talent,' he said during the Business Digitalisation Initiative event with Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) here. Gobind said the government has seen businesses that adopt digital solutions report up to 30 per cent increase in productivity and income, but this potential remains unrealised. The minister added that about 97 per cent of businesses in Malaysia fall under MSMEs, making the sector critical to the country's digital economy growth. As the Malaysian Digital Economy Blueprint (2021-2030) plans to generate RM25.5 billion in income by 2025, he said agencies SME Corp and MDEC have ramped up training initiatives over the past four months on digital banking, e-commerce, and automation. Gobind said one area of resistance among SMEs is e-invoicing, with many business owners citing high costs as a barrier to adoption. He assured them that the government is working on cost-reduction measures, including a new programme offering free and low cost e-invoicing solutions. With the government aiming for 25 per cent economic growth this year, Gobind said he hopes MSMEs can fully leverage digital tools for their businesses. MDEC announced that the RM1.5 billion in funds is made possible through strategic public-private-partnerships among government agencies and supporting partners including financial institutions, digital banks, peer to peer (P2P) lending platforms and local service providers. This fund aims to provide digital solutions for the MSMEs, while offering digital financing facilitation for the community's business operation needs.
