Two Malaysians in Bangkok suffer severe burns after being set on fire by unemployed man

BANGKOK, Aug 9 — Two Malaysian tourists were critically injured after being set on fire by an unemployed man on Ratchadamri Road here on Thursday night. The incident occurred at around 10pm on Thursday when the suspect suddenly poured thinner from behind onto the two Malaysians – a man, Ong, 26, and a woman, Gan, 27 – who were seated on the steps near a shopping centre at the time. The Malaysian Embassy's Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to Thailand, Bong Yik Jui, said he had visited the victims, who remain in critical but stable condition. He said Ong was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Police General Hospital, while Gan is receiving treatment at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. 'Ong sustained second-degree burns across his upper body, both front and back. The injuries are considered serious but not life-threatening. 'Gan suffered 36 per cent, second degree burns but her condition is stable and conscious,' he told Bernama when contacted on Friday. He added that the embassy has contacted the families of Ong and Gan to inform about the incident. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Lumpini Police Station Pol Col Yingyos Suwanno said the suspect is a 30-year-old man from Sa Kaeo province, who allegedly attacked the victims out of frustration over being unemployed. He attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by members of the public nearby. Yingyos said the suspect is currently being held in custody at Lumpini Police Station, while police continue to investigate the motive behind the attack and are expected to take statements from the victims once they are in stable condition. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — The Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta is closely monitoring the situation following the sinking of the passenger ferry KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya in Indonesia's Bali Strait on July 4. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following recent reports suggesting a Malaysian may be among the victims, the Embassy is working with the Ministry's Consular Department and Indonesian authorities to verify the individual's identity. 'The Embassy remains in close and constant communication with the relevant agencies as efforts to confirm the identities of those affected are ongoing,' the ministry said in a statement. It added that search and rescue operations were still underway. Indonesian authorities initially reported that no Malaysians were involved in the incident. Malaysia monitoring security in Qatar after missile strike, Malaysians advised to stay vigilant

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Malaysia's Foreign Ministry is closely monitoring the security situation in Qatar, and is prepared to take appropriate measures, if necessary. To date, no Malaysian has been affected. 'The safety and well-being of Malaysian citizens remain the government's utmost priority. 'Updates will be provided through official media channels as necessary,' the ministry said, adding that it is maintaining close communication with the local authorities as well as registered Malaysians in the country. On Monday, Iran carried out a missile strike on the United States (US) Al Udeid military base in Qatar. The strike followed a US offensive on Sunday on three of Iran's nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, marking a dramatic escalation in hostilities in the US-backed Israeli campaign against Iran that began on June 13. In response, Qatar temporarily shut down its airspace on Monday evening. The closure has disrupted several flights, including those involving Malaysian citizens. Qatar has since reopened its airspace, according to the Malaysian Embassy in Doha. The embassy advised travellers to obtain the latest info regarding the status of their planned flights. Malaysians in Qatar are advised to remain vigilant, adhere to official advisories from the Qatari government, and get timely updates and advice from the embassy and credible news sources. The Malaysian Foreign Ministry can be reached at +603 8887 4570 or via email at [email protected]. — Bernama

No impact on Malaysians in Jordan following Iran-US strikes, says embassy

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — All Malaysian citizens in Jordan are well and unaffected by the attacks taking place in Iran early Sunday morning. In a statement, the Malaysian Embassy in Amman, Jordan, said the current situation in the country is stable and local authorities are tightening security measures to ensure public safety. The embassy said on its Facebook page that recent incidents of unknown debris falling in Amman and Azraq took place far away from the living quarters of Malaysian students. 'The embassy will continue to monitor the situation in Jordan and provide updates from time to time,' it said. For enquiries, the embassy can be reached via e-mail [email protected] or phone +962-6-5902400 (office hours) /+962785902400 (officer in charge). Hostilities between Israel and Iran came to a head on June 13 when Israel carried out unprovoked airstrikes on multiple locations across Iran, including its military and nuclear facilities. Tehran retaliated. On Sunday, the United States carried out strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, prompting global fear and condemnation. — Bernama
