Strengthen mental health support for students
RESEARCH published in Malaysian Family Physician (Feb 7, 2024) titled 'Self-system and mental health status among Malaysian youth attending higher educational institutions: A nationwide cross-sectional study', revealed alarming rates of depression (up to 31%), anxiety (up to 60%), and stress (up to 26%) among local students attending higher educational institutions in the country. The research was conducted between June and December 2021.
According to a survey in 2023 by the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE), the numbers were higher during the Covid-19 pandemic with nearly 40% of students reporting that they experienced moderate to severe stress. Academic pressure, financial struggles and social isolation were cited as the main factors.
