Bidayuh leader Dago honoured for steadfast leadership, historic role

KUCHING (May 18): The late Datuk Amar Dominic Dago Randan is remembered as a pillar of quiet strength and integrity who played a pivotal role in uniting the Bidayuh community during a defining moment in Malaysia's history.
Former Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Dato Sri Robert Jacob Ridu paid tribute to Dago, highlighting his significant contributions during the formation of the Malaysian Federation in 1963.
'Dago was the first Bidayuh elected as a Member of Parliament in Malaysia, and he stood as a unifying force for his people,' he added.
'He leaves behind not only a legacy of leadership, but also an example of how strength and true vision can be carried forward with gentleness and resolve,' said Ridu in a heartfelt statement honouring the statesman.
'He knew what he stood for, and he conveyed his values with clarity, quiet dignity, and a deep sense of purpose,' said Ridu, describing Dago as a man of conviction and wisdom who made a lasting impact despite often staying out of the spotlight.
Recalling their early acquaintance, Ridu shared how he first met Dago in Kuala Lumpur during a dinner for the establishment of the Malaysian Federation in 1963, hosted by the then Sarawak State Financial Secretary John Hepburn.
'I had the privilege of being introduced to Dago (at the event). He was a young man – not quite 30, and an independent Member of Council Negri representing Serian, while I was just 19 years old – on my way to United Kingdom to pursue my study then.
'I had a tremendous sense of pride that we have a Bidayuh flag bearer, and we had it in Dominic Dago. Imagine a Bidayuh from kampong, not far from mine. When I returned from the UK, I immediately joined the flag bearer in Parti Bumiputra.'
Ridu extended his condolences to Dago's family, loved ones, and the wider Bidayuh community, noting that Dago's enduring contributions would continue to inspire future generations.
Dago passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday morning.
His funeral service is scheduled at 9 am today (May 19) at the Holy Trinity Church in Kampung Pichin, followed by burial at the Kampung Pichin Cemetery. Bidayuh community condolences Dominic Dago Randan Robert Jacob Ridu
