MPI e-Journal to be launched in conjunction with M'sian Journalism Night 2025
PUTRAJAYA: The launch of the Malaysian Press Institute's (MPI) e-Journal, by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, will be the highlight of the Malaysian Journalism Night 2025 at the Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur Friday (June 20). MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail said that the e-Journal, published for the first time, aims to empower scientific writing among journalists, particularly related to research in the fields of journalism, media and communication. "This is yet another effort by the MPI to promote a culture of knowledge and strengthen the national journalism landscape through an academic approach," he said in a statement Thursday (June 19). The prestigious awards ceremony, organised by the MPI, will also be graced by nearly 1,000 guests, including prominent journalists, senior editors, reporters, media practitioners, and corporate partners from across the country. PETRONAS, as the main sponsor, will also be represented by the company's senior management at the event, which will witness the presentation of the MPI-PETRONAS Malaysia Journalism Awards 2024 involving 23 categories. Ainol Amriz said that MPI will also feature a special exhibition in the main hall corridor showcasing the history of the institution and the evolution of the Malaysian Journalism Awards since its inception. "This ceremony not only recognises the best works of the country's journalists but also elevates the contribution of journalism as a driver of societal and national progress," he said. The MPI-PETRONAS Malaysian Journalism Awards 2024 offers a total prize value of RM450,000, with the gold winner taking home a trophy, certificate and cash, while the silver and bronze winners receive a certificate and cash. This year, the MPI received 549 entries from 58 media organisations across the country, including Sabah and Sarawak, reflecting an increased interest in producing high-quality and impactful works. The MPI also accepts nominations for three special categories that recognise the contributions of journalists throughout their careers. The winners' results will be displayed according to the award presentation segments after being officially announced on Friday night. - Bernama

MPI calls for win-win collaboration
PETALING JAYA: Media outlets and both the private and public sectors should work towards a mutually beneficial relationship to ensure the sustainability of the media industry. Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) president Datuk Yoo Soo Heong said corporate and government bodies should continue to support media organisations, given the consistent coverage and visibility they receive through media platforms. "Nowadays, media outlets are experiencing a decline in advertising revenue due to external factors. "So, how can local media houses move forward and remain viable? Featured Videos "This is where a 'win-win' situation can be created between the media and the private or government sector. "The media gives them a platform and a voice, so they should support us, this is very important. "At the same time, the media supports the government and the private sector by acting as a form of third-party endorsement," he said to reporters after an appreciation event for sponsors of the Malaysian Journalism Awards MPI–Petronas 2024 (HKM 2024) and the 2025 Malam Wartawan Malaysia (MWM 2025) celebration. He said the increase in total sponsorship from RM1,066,500 last year to RM1,249,500 this year reflects ongoing support for MPI and the media industry. Of the total, RM450,000 was contributed by Petronas for the HKM 2024 winners, while RM799,500 will go towards organising the MWM 2025. Yoo said any surplus funds from MWM 2025 would be used to fund training programmes for journalists. This year's HKM 2024, which will be held on June 20, attracted 548 submissions from media professionals across 21 award categories, an increase of 60 entries compared to the previous year. The Best Photo Journalism category received the highest number of entries (79), followed by Best News Video (65) and Best Video Podcast (46).
