Bryan Cranston relishes his Malcolm in the Middle return

Bang Showbiz | Los Angeles Bryan Cranston 'missed' his 'Malcolm in the Middle' character. The 69-year-old actor has reprised the role of Hal, the family patriarch, to star in the 'Malcolm in the Middle' revival show, and Bryan has relished the experience of playing Hal once again. The actor told People: 'Slipping back into that character of Hal for me was so rewarding - I missed him. 'It's been almost 20 years since we said goodbye. And he's a sweet, lovable man. He's really a lovable guy, and it was fun to see all my whole family back together. It was great.' Most of the sitcom's original cast - including Jane Kaczmarek, Frankie Muniz, Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield - have returned for the revival show. And Bryan's on-screen costume has helped him to get back into character. He explained: 'It's a shortsleeve shirt that Hal would wear, a patterned short-sleeve shirt that screams out he's not going anywhere.' Bryan previously admitted that he'd jump at the chance to star in a 'Malcolm in the Middle' movie. The actor loved working with his co-stars on the hit TV show - which originally ran from 2000 until 2006 - and he felt excited by the idea of appearing in a film. He told E! News in 2023: 'There was some talk about the possibility of doing like a reunion movie of 'Malcolm in the Middle'. 'We had such a great family on that and I certainly would be open to that if there was a good idea that came up like, 'Oh, that would be fantastic to explore what happened to this family 20 years later.' I can't believe it's already that, but that would be fun to do.'

Bryan Cranston Reveals Why Returning as Hal for Malcolm in the Middle Reboot Was ‘So Rewarding'

Bryan Cranston is once again embracing the chaos of the Wilkerson household — and he couldn't be happier. The beloved actor has officially returned to his iconic role of Hal in the reboot of Malcolm in the Middle, and according to Cranston, the experience has been nothing short of emotional. In a recent interview with People, Cranston opened up about what it felt like to step back into the shoes of the eccentric, big-hearted father figure audiences fell in love with. 'Slipping back into that character of Hal for me was so rewarding — I missed him,' he said. 'It's been almost 20 years since we said goodbye. And he's a sweet, lovable man. He's a lovable guy, and it was fun to see my whole family back together. It was great.' The reboot has generated widespread buzz, bringing back much of the original cast, including Jane Kaczmarek (Lois), Frankie Muniz (Malcolm), Christopher Masterson (Francis), and Justin Berfield (Reese). Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewy, has not returned; instead, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark steps into the role as the youngest Wilkerson child. The reboot also introduces several new characters: Kiana Madeira as Malcolm's girlfriend Tristan, Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae as his younger siblings Jamie and Kelly, and Keeley Karsten as Malcolm's daughter, Leah. Set as a four-part special, the reboot centers on Malcolm and his daughter getting reluctantly pulled back into their family's never-ending antics when Hal and Lois gather everyone for their 40th wedding anniversary party. It's a premise that promises the same unpredictable blend of heart and hilarity that made the original show a cult favorite. Malcolm in the Middle originally premiered in 2000 and ran for seven seasons, spanning 151 episodes. It broke sitcom conventions with its single-camera setup, lack of a laugh track, and fourth-wall-breaking narration from Malcolm. Cranston, who was best known at the time for his guest appearances on shows like Seinfeld and The X-Files, quickly became a standout as the bumbling but endearing Hal — a performance that earned him three Emmy nominations and cemented his place in pop culture. Before transforming into the infamous Walter White on Breaking Bad, Cranston's portrayal of Hal showcased his remarkable comedic range and depth. His physical comedy, warmth, and vulnerability helped define the tone of the show and endeared him to millions of viewers worldwide.

Bryan Cranston returns as Hal in ‘Malcolm in the Middle' revival: 'I missed him'

Bryan Cranston is officially back as Hal Wilkerson in the upcoming Malcolm in the Middle revival series. In a new interview with People published on May 25, Cranston described his return to the iconic role as 'so rewarding.' 'Slipping back into that character of Hal for me was so rewarding — I missed him,' Cranston said. 'It's been almost 20 years since we said goodbye. He's a sweet, lovable man, and it was fun to see my whole family back together. It was great.' Cranston even shared a personal touch he used to reconnect with Hal's quirky personality — wearing one of Hal's signature short-sleeve patterned shirts. 'It screams out he's not going anywhere,' he joked. The Malcolm in the Middle revival brings back much of the original cast, including Frankie Muniz, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield. Newcomer Caleb Ellsworth-Clark takes over the role of Dewey, and two new characters join the mix: Malcolm's daughter Leah, played by The Fabelmans star Keeley Karsten, and a new sibling, Kelly, portrayed by Vaughan Murrae. The limited-run series is being produced by 20th Television and New Regency. Series creator Linwood Boomer returns as writer and executive producer, alongside Bryan Cranston and a team including Tracy Katsky, Gail Berman, Arnon Milchan, and Ken Kwapis, who will direct all four episodes.

I can separate myself from being on it and watching it as a fan."
