World Serious: National competition crowns kings of wheelchair softball
The nation's largest mall served as the backdrop for the competition to crown the nation's best wheelchair softball team Saturday. The National Wheelchair Softball Association's annual World Series drew 18 teams from each corner of the country to Minnesota. Over three days and 65 games, they competed for the ultimate crown. Mall of America hosted the event in its north parking lots—with 5 diamonds of games happening simultaneously. For players, it's a chance to compete—but also connect. "Yes, we're going to fight in between the lines, but we're brothers outside of it," said Brendan Downes, a member of the Minnesota Rolling Twins. "We've been through the fox hole of life together. That puts you in a different relationship all the way around." Downes has been a wheelchair user since a surgery early in life. His father Jeff serves as an event organizer. "To be able to see him make a difference in other people's lives, as courage center difd for us, for him, it's a very rewarding payback," Jeff Downes said. "It's a community. It's an opportunity for sports outlet — if you think you can't do it, come out out — give it a try."

Birthday celebration planned at Mall of America as the attraction turns 33
The Mall of America in Bloomington- one of the most famous places in Minnesota - is getting ready for a big celebration this week, as the iconic landmark celebrates its 33rd year - and continues to grow. Many remember the area used to be home to Metropolitan Stadium. "Home to the Minnesota Twins, the Minnesota Vikings, the Minnesota Kicks, our soccer team, and in our parking lot was the North Stars. And in fact, right here is home plate where all the Minnesota Twins greats played baseball," said Dan Jasper, the official storyteller for Mall of America. Although the stadium is gone, the mall was careful to keep and honor the sports history as it was built. The chair Harmon Killebrew hit with his 520-foot home run, as well as the coin marking the 50-yard line where a new play was born in 1975, can both be found if you look closely. "Roger Starbuck, the quarterback for the Cowboys, took a hike from this place. He took a hike. He fell back. The Purple People Eaters, they're rushing him. Roger throws the pass with his eyes closed. Drew Peason shoves off, should've been a penalty - all I'm saying. After the game, media ask Roger 'How did you make that incredible throw' and he said, 'I closed my eyes and I said a Hail Mary.' First time in NFL history, right on this spot," said Jasper. Since then, even as a mall, magic moments have been made. Among the 33 million annual visitors checking out the 500 stores, some famous faces have swung by - from Ozzy to Arnold and everyone in between. And even more special memories are likely to be made as it continues to grow. "We're going to be adding a large enclosed waterpark connected to the mall with our own theming, and all these wonderful water attractions. So much fun. Including a third hotel, including more parking and then we have goals and dreams beyond that," said Cupcakes and karaoke will be at the Huntington Bank Rotunda starting at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11 to celebrate the mall's birthday.

The Bigger Economic Meaning Of Amazon Prime Day
UNITED STATES - AUGUST 01: Mall of America in Minneapolis, United States in August, 1992 - Roller ... More coaster. (Photo by Antonio RIBEIRO/Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images) In addition to the two directly connected to Bloomington, MN's Mall of America, over fifty hotels are within a 10-minute radius of what some describe as the 'Megamall.' The abundance of hotels near what is a globally prominent shopping center is no coincidence. In truth, it's evidence of how many patrons of the Mall of America don't reside nearby. The Megamall is a shopping destination, including for those who drive long distances and even fly to visit its myriad stores, rides, restaurants, and so much more. What does the Mall of America have to do with a column about Amazon Prime Day? Realistically very little, but also quite a lot. To see why, it's useful to remember that the Mall of America wasn't the only shopping locale created for consumers well beyond the metro area in which it was located. Which is where Amazon Prime Day enters the picture. Stop and think about how profoundly Amazon has changed the shopping experience. While a resident of Stillwater, OK once had to drive almost five hours for the greatly expanded variety of Dallas shops and malls, and New Orleanians formerly had to drive over five hours for Houston's far more expansive shelves, now citizens of small towns and smaller cities alike can fulfill nearly every consumptive desire from the comfort of home. Stop and think about that. For the longest time 'just ship it' was the stuff of rich people. Shopping for clothes and other items in stores, they frequently couldn't be bothered with the hassle of bringing market goods home, particularly while traveling, the cost of shipping be damned. As for the rest of us, shipping was a substantial cost. Call it a luxury. Which is the beauty of profit-motivated progress, or one of many beauties. The profit motivated make common what used to be a luxury. Amazon looms large here. Nowadays Amazon Prime members don't even need to bother with 'just ship it.' They know from their Prime membership that whatever they order will arrive within two days, but frequently one day or even less. Considering Prime Day itself, it's now defined in days, with 96 hours of shopping discounts on almost literally 'everything' from the everything store. Which is quite the change. Families used to take shopping trips that could be measured in days, while now they just tap on their phone throughout the day, and as needs come up. No driving, gasoline, meal stops, hotels, or flying required. Not only do would-be shoppers no longer have to endure the expense of travel to shopping locales that never offered even a fraction of what can be had on Amazon with a mouse click, it's worth adding that 'the getting' on Amazon is quite a bit cheaper than it was back in the days of traveling or flying long distances to shop. Precisely because Amazon is buying for enormous numbers of shoppers in the U.S., and for that matter the world, it can command the lowest of prices from producers willing to substantially shrink their margins in return for abundance of buyers brought together by Amazon. Has Amazon and its Prime Day put The Mall of America and others like it out of business? Certainly not. About this, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos never expected to replace brick and mortar in the first place. Instead, Amazon has made the Megamall and others much better, which is what competition always does. As you're reading this, Amazon Prime Day is in full swing. And it's worth thinking about for reasons beyond low prices. What a different world it is thanks to Amazon Prime Day. What a better one too.

A 270-degree movie screen that wraps around the walls has opened in Shakopee
Marcus Theatres unveiled its Screen X theater in Minnesota earlier this month. The 270-degree screen debuted with the opening of Thunderbolts* at Southbridge Crossing Cinema in Shakopee. Screen X, which aims to create a more immersive theater experience, expands films beyond the front-of-theater screen, putting the action on the side walls of the theater as well. The company, which is separate from Marcus Theatres, works with studios to identify scenes that would benefit from the extended screen on a film-by-film basis, Pamela Henson, Marcus Theatres' Director of Media and Communications, said during a media unveiling. Around the country, Screen X is currently available at select theaters from B&B Theatres, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark, and Marcus Theatres, with AMC planning to open some this summer, per the Hollywood Reporter. However, the only one in Minnesota outside of Southbridge Crossing Cinema is at B&B Theatres Bloomington 13 at the Mall of America. Starting with Thunderbolts*, there are a handful of features and concert films that will be available in Screen X through the end of the year. First up will be Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon. Later in the year, 28 Years Later, Predator: Badlands, Jurassic World Rebirth, F1, and Wicked: For Good, will be available in Screen X, among other movies.
