Filmmaker Murali Mohan passes away at 57; directed hits with Upendra, Shiva Rajkumar; battled kidney ailments for years
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) The Kannada film fraternity is mourning the loss of director Murali Mohan , a filmmaker who left a lasting imprint on the industry through his collaborations with some of its biggest stars. Best known for helming 'Nagarahavu' with Real Star Upendra , Santha with Hat-trick Hero Shivarajkumar, and Mallikarjuna with Crazy Star Ravichandran , Murali Mohan passed away in Bengaluru on August 13. He was 57. His death comes after a long and difficult battle with kidney-related ailments. The news was shared by the director Prakasharaj Mehu via social media. Taking to Facebook handle he wrote, "Murali Mohan was one of the driving forces behind the film Om! The reason I say this is because, during the story discussions at Vajreshwari Productions that I was part of, every time the topic of Om came up, Varadanna would fondly remember Murali and the contribution he made to that film!! He praised Murali's intelligence. It is a tragedy that his true talent was never fully utilised in the Kannada film industry!!!" Prakasharaj Mehu further wrote, "Seeing people like him makes one believe the saying that nothing else grows under a big banyan tree. Murali, who always spoke about God, religion, meditation, homa, and havan, appeared to me more like the head of a monastery than a film director. He had bought a plot in Uttarahalli, but it got caught up with the Rajakaluve (stormwater drain). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Redefine Your Future with a Top Online MBA SRM Online Enquire Now Undo He struggled a lot to save it. AINU launches new centre in Hyderabad covering various sub-specialities
The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), launched its new centre in Banjara Hills here on Monday. The hospital has a capacity of 150 beds. The centre features four operating rooms, 34 dialysis stations and advanced robotic surgical technology, enabling complex urology and nephrology procedures with greater precision. The hospital also has eight centres of excellence, covering sub-specialities such as female urology, uro-oncology and robotic surgery, paediatric urology, reconstructive urology and andrology. The burden of urological diseases is rising sharply in India due to lifestyle disorders such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes, coupled with increased life expectancy. 'Prostate cancer is now the second most common cancer among Indian men, growing at 2.5% annually, and 50 to 60% of men over 60 suffer from benign prostatic enlargement,' said AINU manging director Mallikarjuna. He added that 25 years ago, urology was largely limited to treating kidney stones and enlarged prostates. Today, the scope includes advanced cancer care, complex reconstructions, paediatric interventions, female urology and robotic surgeries. 'One doctor cannot be perfect in every area, so we have created dedicated teams focused solely on one sub-speciality, performing the same surgeries repeatedly. This results in faster procedures, fewer complications, better outcomes and ultimately lower costs for patients,' he added.

Kurnool farmer finds diamond worth Rs 13 lakh in field
KURNOOL: A woman farmer in Diguva Chintalkonda village of Tuggali mandal, Kurnool district, struck fortune when she discovered a diamond worth Rs 13.5 lakh while working in her agricultural field. The incident, under Jonnagiri police station limits, sparked excitement among local traders and gem enthusiasts. While ploughing her field, the woman noticed a glittering object in the soil. Realising it was a diamond, she decided to auction it. As news of the discovery spread on social media, traders rushed to the village to bid for the precious gem. Initially, the farmer and her family quoted Rs 18 lakh for the stone. However, a group of traders formed a syndicate and offered only Rs 8 lakh. Unwilling to accept the lower bid, she withheld the sale. Eventually, a new trader from Chennampalli in Tuggali mandal bought the diamond for Rs 13.5 lakh. This gem is being regarded as one of the most valuable diamonds found in the region in recent times. Jonnagiri Sub-Inspector Mallikarjuna told TNIE that the diamond was indeed sold for Rs 13.5 lakh. 'We visited the woman's house to inquire, but no one confirmed the sale,' he said. He said the region, including Jonnagiri, Pagidirai, Erragudi, Tuggali, and Upparlapalli, sees occasional diamond finds during the rainy season.

Over 300 cases booked, 100+ autos seized for overcharging in Bengaluru
In a bid to check overcharging by autorickshaw drivers following the bike-taxi ban, an enforcement drive across the city Monday saw nearly 300 cases of violations and over 100 autos being seized. As complaints of daylight robbery by both regular and app-based auto drivers pour in, the crackdown, directed by transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, involved 22 enforcement teams operating from early morning till evening. The drive covered both the city centre and outer areas including Devanahalli, Chandapura and Magadi. Jayanagar RTO reported the highest number of violations with 48 cases and 18 vehicles seized, followed by Rajajinagar RTO (36 cases and 13 seizures). Additional transport commissioner (enforcement) C Mallikarjuna said: "Field staff verified complaints directly with passengers to confirm the fare and distance travelled. Cases were booked only after ensuring drivers violated rates fixed by Regional Transport Authority (RTA)." Many of the seized vehicles lacked essential documentation like valid permits, fitness certificates and legal papers. "These are serious offences. Penalties in such cases can range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000. A detailed report from RTOs will offer more clarity," Mallikarjuna said. Passengers alleged that ride-hailing apps have been levying unauthorised fees — congestion charges, pick-up fees, driver surcharges and even pre-booking tips — in clear violation of transport norms. In Bengaluru, RTA has fixed Rs 30 as the base fare for first 2km and Rs 15 for every additional km. Despite this, commuters have been forced to pay more, especially after the ban on bike taxis increased demand for autos. The city currently has around 3.6 lakh operational autos. The department has said it will soon evaluate the role of aggregators in these violations. "Once RTOs submit reports, action will be taken against app-based platforms as well," Mallikarjuna said. CN Sreenivas, president, Autorickshaw Drivers' Union (CITU), acknowledged the issue, saying 80-90% of auto drivers in the city have joined aggregator platforms. "The department has no control over these platforms. They've introduced tactics like platform fees and tips to maintain a commission-based model," he said. The transport department has confirmed its enforcement drive will continue in the coming days. New minimum fare At Rs 38? Sreenivas told TOI it has been months since a committee headed by a DCP submitted a report to the Bengaluru Urban deputy commissioner on revision of auto fares. Auto unions had demanded Rs 40 as base fare for the first 2km and subsequently Rs 20 per km. Sources said RTA is likely to consider Rs 38 as base fare and Rs 18 per km thereafter. Sreenivas said they will meet the minister seeking fare revision.
