Mayor mum on renaming Hamidia hospital at meet

Bhopal: In contrast to last week's heated BMC council debate over renaming institutions linked to Last Nawab of Bhopal, Hamidullah Khan, the subject was absent from Hamidia hospital meeting, despite the presence of BMC Mayor Malti Rai, here on Monday. "The issue (renaming of Hamidia Hospital) was not discussed," said Rai. Her presence, however, fuelled speculation about the proposal, as mayors rarely attend meetings at government medical colleges. Meanwhile, the largest tertiary care hospital, now in its 70th year, is enhancing its healthcare and educational facilities by introducing a bone marrow transplant facility and a mother milk bank. The new bone marrow transplant unit, to be established on the fourth floor of Block H-1, carries an estimated cost of Rs 16–18 crore. This facility will provide specialised treatments for blood-related conditions at reduced rates, whilst Ayushman card holders will receive free treatment.

From City of Lakes to Clean City: Bhopal Ranked Second in Swachh Survey

Bhopal: India's fresh batch of clean cities has made its mark, with a new lineup emerging as top contenders in the 'Swachh Shehar' charts. The rankings this year was shaped by a key structural change—previous champions like Indore were shifted into a separate League, allowing other cities a chance to rise. Among these, Bhopal climbed to second place nationally, missing the top spot by just 12 points. Indore has held that position for seven straight years, the tag of India's cleanest city. Bhopal's performance this year proves it's not far behind. "This achievement is a result of the cooperation and awareness of the dedicated employees of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, Safai Mitras, officials, and above all, the people of Bhopal," said Bhopal mayor Malti Rai. Out of maximum 12,500 score, Bhopal got 12067. Indore scored 12,080 points out of 12,500 in Swachh Survekshan 2025. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission , Bhopal has attained recognition as India's second cleanest city amongst municipalities with populations exceeding 10 lakh in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. The award ceremony took place on Thursday at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the honour to MP Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Bhopal Mayor Malti Rai, and BMC commissioner Harendra Narayan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Bhopal secured a 7-Star ranking in the "Garbage-Free City" category while maintaining its status as India's cleanest state capital and Water+ city status. 95% of major drains cleared, city prepped for rains, says BMC

Bhopal: As monsoon clouds gather over the state capital, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) claims it is ready to tackle seasonal waterlogging, claiming 95% of large drains have been cleared. With 495 large drains mapped across the city, BMC additional commissioner (in charge Swach Bharat mission) Devendra Singh Chouhan claimed the civic body is prepared to ensure smooth water flow before the downpours begin. This year, monsoon preparedness goes beyond mere cleanup. Alongside the central control room operating out of the fire station near PHQ, each of BMC's 21 zones has been instructed to establish its own rapid response system, ensuring that flood-prone areas aren't left stranded, he added. Still, past seasons have shown that clearance efforts alone aren't enough. Recurring waterlogging in Shahpura, Alpana Intersection, Damkheda, Idgah Hills, Chhola and Sindhi Colony Intersections stems not just from clogged drains but from unchecked encroachments and aging drainage networks. While poclain machines are being deployed, the real test will come when the first heavy rains arrive. For Bhopal's residents, the question isn't just whether drains are cleaned—it's whether their streets will stay above water when the monsoon makes landfall. Complaint review: 53% resolved in June: Bhopal Mayor Malti Rai recently reviewed the Mayor Helpline to enhance complaint resolution. Officials reported that 52.8% of the 1,728 complaints in June were already addressed, with efforts continuing for the rest, as per a press release. Expert findings suggest inadequate infra: Storm Water Drainage System of Bhopal City (WJERT, 2019) –highlights the lack of a comprehensive drainage system, encroachments on natural drains, and inadequate infrastructure leading to seasonal flooding. Bhopal Urban Agglomerate NAQUIM 2.0 (CGWB, 2023-24) – Focuses on drainage patterns, groundwater contamination, and urban planning challenges affecting stormwater management. A reconnaissance survey in 2009 found that most city drains theoretically have adequate capacity, except three key nalas that contribute to flooding: Patra Nala – Drains nearly the entire Old City, receiving flow from multiple smaller channels. It ultimately discharges into the Islamnagar River, then the Halali River (50 km total network). Saket Nagar Nala – Collects runoff from major urban areas including New Market, South T.T. Nagar, Arera Colony, and Katara Hills, before merging into Hathaikheda Reservoir and eventually the Betwa River. Banganga Nala – Drains areas like Shamla Hills, Jawahar Chowk, and North T.T. Nagar, merging into Lower Lake (Chota Talab), which then flows into Patra Nala before reaching Halali River. Despite theoretical capacity, many drains are inefficient, leading to localized flooding due to blockages, encroachments, and inadequate drainage connectivity in parts of the city, especially at the time of rain and monsoon.

He said that they will give a list of Muslim gym trainers to the police. Speaking to the media, MP Alok Sharma said, 'There are a lot of gyms in Bhopal we are enlisting, in which the trainers are Muslims. Even women should be gym trainers... We will give this list to the police in the coming times... Nobody will be permitted for love jihad now...' He also noted that 'land jihad' is going on in the state, and the administration will take action on such cases. 'Even land jihad is going on. This will not work. The law will do its work and take action on such matters...' BJP MP said. MP Alok Sharma's statement came after Bajrang Dal members complained of the presence of Muslim trainers in a gym in Bhopal. The BJP MP interacted with the media post the 'Bhopal Vileenikaran Diwas' (Bhopal Merger Day) celebrations on Sunday. According to an X post by the BJP MP, he hoisted the national flag at Jumerati Post Office, which was the main centre of the Bhopal Merger Movement. Last month, Madhya Pradesh Minister Vishvas Sarang raised the issue of 'love jihad' in the state, after the main accused in an alleged rape and blackmailing case in Bhopal was shot in leg by police. Minister Sarang told ANI, 'Those who do such acts should be shot dead in the middle of the road. Acts like love jihad will not be tolerated. If such things are happening by forming gangs, then it is unacceptable. I would say, why should they have shot in the leg? They should have shot him in the chest. Such people have no right to live anywhere. Those who lure girls and commit crimes of conversion of religion then it is unforgivable. They should get shot on the chest and not on the leg.' According to the information, private college girls were allegedly targeted by some former students of their college, who lured them into a friendship trap, sexually assaulted and blackmailed them. FIRs were registered based on complaints by the victims. The police arrested five accused, including the main accused Farhan, in the matter so far, and different SITs (Special Investigation Teams) have also been constituted to probe the matter. (ANI)
