Polls Close in North Lebanon and Akkar Governorate as Vote Counting Begins

Polling stations closed at 7 PM Sunday in the second phase of Lebanon's municipal and local elections, held across North Lebanon and Akkar Governorate. Ballot counting began immediately after the close. The Interior Ministry announced the final voter turnout across the two governorates as follows: Tripoli (25.04%), Zgharta (38.77%), Bsharri (32.03%), Minieh-Dennieh (49.96%), Koura (38.92%), and Batroun (48.26%). North Lebanon recorded 614,295 registered voters, with 220,562 casting ballots—a turnout of 35.90%. In Akkar, 139,363 of 294,647 voters participated, reflecting a higher turnout of 47.30%. Interior Minister: Security Forces Responded Promptly to Incidents Speaking to reporters shortly before polls closed, Interior Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar said the number of election-related incidents exceeded the official complaints filed. These ranged from administrative to security issues, with rapid intervention by security forces in coordination with the army. He attributed many disturbances to supporters trying to protect their candidates and urged the public to remain calm and responsible during the vote count. 🇱🇧 Lebanese PM Nawaf Salam monitors the vote count from the Interior Ministry's operations room after polls close, joined by Deputy PM Tarek Mitri#Lebanon #elections #عكار #طرابلس — ManarWeb (@WebManar) May 11, 2025 Tripoli Turnout and Alleged Violations Commenting on the low turnout in Tripoli, Al-Hajjar noted that the number of candidate lists was significant and that the city saw some electoral activity late in the day. He stressed that this election is crucial for reinforcing the authority of the state and advancing development. Regarding allegations of vote buying, Al-Hajjar confirmed that security agencies had detained individuals in two confirmed cases and that broader investigations are underway. Staff Absences Addressed On reports of missing election staff, the minister cited reasons including reluctance, travel difficulty, and low financial compensation. He said replacements were secured and expressed hope for full staff commitment in the remaining election phases in Beirut, the South, and the Bekaa.

Over 20 Israeli Raids Pound Nabatieh District in South Lebanon

Israeli warplanes launched a series of intense airstrikes targeting forested hills and elevated areas in Kfar Tibnit and Nabatieh Al-Fawka in southern Lebanon, according to local media reports. The strikes extended to several villages across the Nabatieh district. Lebanon's National News Agency confirmed that Israeli aircraft bombed areas around Nabatieh, including Ali Al-Taher Hill and Dabsha near Kfar Rumman. Explosions were heard across vast areas of southern Lebanon, with shockwaves felt far from the impact zones. Videos shared by residents showed thick plumes of smoke rising from multiple locations. 🇱🇧 Circulating video shows a series of Israeli airstrikes on the heights of Kfar Tibnit and Nabatieh Al-Fawqa areas in south Lebanon#Israeliwarplanes #Israeliviolations #النبطية #الجنوب — ManarWeb (@WebManar) May 8, 2025 The attacks come amid continued Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement in place since November. Israeli media claimed the air force targeted a 'significant Hezbollah site' in southern Lebanon, with Yedioth Ahronoth reporting that 20 raids were carried out in two waves. Meanwhile, Al-Manar correspondent reported that Israeli occupation forces opened fire on a civilian vehicle traveling between Adaisseh and Kfarkela. The passengers survived. Artillery also struck the outskirts of Shebaa and the Bastra farm area with two shells. The attacks come amid continued Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement in place since November. According to recent data, Israel has breached the truce more than 3,100 times, resulting in 153 deaths and 354 injuries. UNIFIL Chief: Israeli Actions Prevent Lebanese Army Deployment UNIFIL commander Major General Aroldo Lázaro said that Israeli occupation and military activity are the main obstacles preventing the Lebanese Army's full deployment in the south. In a recent interview, Lázaro openly criticized the Israeli enemy for its continued violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, highlighting that Israeli forces still occupy Lebanese territory despite the ceasefire agreement. He revealed that UNIFIL had issued an official protest against what he described as Israel's 'illegal presence.' He also noted that thousands of Lebanese civilians have been unable to return to their towns due to ongoing Israeli violations. Lázaro's remarks mark a clear acknowledgment from the international community of Israel's role in destabilizing southern Lebanon—an assessment some local voices continue to downplay, focusing their criticism on those upholding the truce instead of those breaking it.

Yemen Says 'No Red Lines' as Ballistic Missile Impacts in Ben Gurion Airport

Yemeni Revolutionaries say there are no red lines in the fight against the Zionist entity as a ballistic missile impacts in Ben Gurion Airport, with Israeli occupation military failing to intercept the projectile. Millions of Israelis went to shelters as sirens blare in central 'Israel' on Sunday morning. The ballistic missile fired from Yemen impacted in the area of Ben Gurion Airport, the Israeli occupation army (Israeli Occupation Forces – IOF) said, confirming it had failed to intercept the missile. 'An impact was identified in the area of Ben Gurion Airport,' it said, noting that it made several attempts to intercept the missile fired from Yemen. 'The Israeli Air Force's aerial defense array is investigating the failure,' the IOF added. As per normal procedure, there is a freeze and no landings or takeoffs are taking place,' the Israel Airport Authority said in a statement. 'Yemen Demonstrated Capabilities' Yemeni Armed Forces have yet to release a statement over the missile strike. Meanwhile, Mohammad Al-Bukhaiti, a senior official in Yemen's Ansarullah revolutionary movement, told the Qatari Al-Araby TV channel that the Yemenis demonstrated their ability to strike sensitive targets in the Zionist entity. He stressed that the group has 'no red lines' in its fight against the occupation regime in support of the oppressed Palestinian people in Gaza. Airlines Halt Flights On the other hand, German carrier Lufthansa and Spanish airline Air Europa halted flights to and from Tel Aviv on Sunday after the missile strike. The Lufthansa group, whose carriers also include SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines, cancels all flights to and from Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport scheduled for Sunday, according to its website.

Israeli enemy warplanes launched a new offensive on Sunday, targeting a structure in Beirut's southern suburbs (Dahiyeh), specifically within a densely populated residential neighborhood in the Hadath-Jamous area. The airstrike led to the destruction of the targeted building and caused significant damage to the surrounding area. Israeli drones initially launched three strikes on the structure, which had been used by local residents for Ashura processions. Trump and Zelensky Meeting Devolves into Shouting Match over Ukraine War

A remarkable shouting match broke out in the Oval Office on Friday between President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, who was hoping to appeal to the US for continued security assistance during his trip to Washington. Raising their voices, Trump and Zelensky — along with the Vice President JD Vance — engaged in a tense back-and-forth about the nature of US support, and whether Zelensky had demonstrated enough gratitude. 'You're not really in good position right now,' Trump scolded Zelensky, raising his voice. 'You're gambling with World War III,' the US president went on. Vance called Zelensky 'disrespectful' for trying to litigate the conflict in public. Trump and Zelensky are expected to sign an agreement granting Washington access to Ukraine's natural resources. The idea of a deal involving Ukraine's rare-earths was first floated by Zelensky last autumn, and the US president took him up on the offer earlier this month. There was some back-and-forth over the past few weeks, with the Ukrainian leader apparently attempting to secure more favorable terms. The minerals deal is expected to provide a general framework and confirm the two nations' intent to create a special joint fund to be followed up by a series of separate documents, stipulating the details. #Trump, #Zelensky engage in a shouting match — ManarWeb (@WebManar) February 28, 2025
