Some Medicare Advantage patients in RI may lose coverage at Brown Health Hospitals
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Patients enrolled in UnitedHealthcare's Medicare Advantage plan have been notified that they will no longer receive coverage at Brown University Health hospitals if the two sides don't strike a deal by July 1. The situation would affect coverage at Brown Health hospitals, including Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children's Hospital, Newport Hospital, and The Miriam Hospital. Cole Manbeck, a spokesperson for UnitedHealthcare, said the potential loss of coverage would only affect the hospitals and not Brown University Health's physicians. Medicare Advantage plans are typically for those 65 years old or older, and for people with disabilities. United and Brown Health have been negotiating for several months, Manbeck said in an email. The contract is set to expire on June 30. 'Our top priority is to utilize the time remaining on our hospital contract to reach a long-term agreement that is affordable while maintaining our ability to continue offering the competitive benefits our Medicare Advantage members rely on,' Manbeck said. 'We hope Brown University Health shares our commitment to reach an agreement that provides continued network access to its hospitals for people enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans.' The loss of coverage would not impact Brown Health hospitals in Massachusetts, Saint Anne's Hospital and Morton Hospital. A spokesperson for Brown Health has not yet returned a request for comment. Burlingame locals rally around restaurant after overnight fire
BURLINGAME (KSNT) – The community of Burlingame is rallying around a local business following an overnight fire. The Den was the town's only restaurant and bar. It took multiple volunteer firefighters hours to get the late night fire under control. 'When we were driving up, we were about a half mile away and we saw the flames, that's when I knew it was going to be bad,' Niki Manbeck, owner of The Den, said. 'I didn't really know what to think, my head was spinning. I've never experienced anything like this. When I walked up, I just broke down in tears because I didn't have any words. We were doing so well, we had a great team we had great food. This is a great community, they supported us. Everything was going great, and to have this happen just four months in, it's just a huge loss.' 'Just really was at a loss for words,' head bartender Mendy Farrell said. 'It's not something you expect to wake up in the morning and find out. It's really our home away from home, so it's like losing your home.' As if losing that sense of home wasn't enough, the loss of the historic building is devastating for some in the tight-knit community. 'The building has been here since main street has been here, so it is a huge loss for the community,' head bartender Harley Dubois said. 'We have regulars from 14 years old all the way into their 80's, so it really does suck because it was a place that everybody would come.' The official cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but the owner was able to capture surveillance video that could help with the investigation. 'My kitchen camera picked up the flames at 11:55,' Manbeck said, 'so I have a four-minute video clip that I turned in. That's how we were able to determine it did not start through the fryers or the grill.' With many questions unanswered, the staff is firm on what comes next. 'We are wanting to come back,' Dubois said. 'We are encouraging the owners that we're all willing. We're from here, we've made very close friends here, we love everybody that's come in.' 'Our story is not over, it's not,' Manbeck said. 'We just barely scratched the surface, we're going to rebuild.' 27 News will continue to follow this story and update you as we get more information. The Den social media accounts says they're planning to launch a GoFundMe to help with expenses. You can find that information via their Facebook account here. For more local news, click here.
