Morton soccer player voted Journal Star athlete of the week for May 5-10.
Claire Ceresa of the Morton girls soccer team was voted the Journal Star high school athletes of the week for May 5-10.
Ceresa scored four goals last week, helping the Potters go 2-0-0. The sophomore put two in the back of the net in last Tuesday's 8-1 win over Dunlap. She then tallied another pair of goals as Morton beat Normal West, 10-2. The Potters are 17-2-0 overall and 6-0-0 in Mid-Illini Conference play, wrapping league play Tuesday against Washington.

Griffin Meeker, Tremont baseball
Meeker hit for the cycle last week. The junior shortstop went 4-for-4 from the lead-off spot in last Monday's 13-3, five-inning win over Fisher. He doubled in the first, hit a two-run, inside the park home run during a four-run second, added a triple in the fourth and completed the four-hit day with one-out single in the fifth.
Kaidance Till, Metamora softball
Till went perfect over three games last week. She was 8-for-8 with two doubles, three home runs and five RBIs. The Ole Miss signee added seven runs, three walks, a stolen base along with a sacrifice fly. She homered in each of the three contests, highlighted by a 4-for-4 outing with two doubles and a solo home to beat Canton, 14-0 five-inning win on Thursday. Till is batting .696 on 48 hits with 15 doubles, 12 homers, 32 RBIs and 28 walks in 26 games.
Trae Brickner, Peoria Christian boys track and field
Brickner earned three victories at the Tremont Invite on Friday. The junior swept the hurdles, winning the 110-meter (15.42 seconds) and 300-meter (42.91 seconds) races. He also set a personal-best in the pole vault, clearing the 12-foot mark for the victory. PCS (76 points) finished third behind runner-up Deer Creek-Mackinaw (94 points) and champion Illini Bluffs (116 points).
Peoria Christian track and field athlete Trae Brickner of Dunlap, Illinois, won the Boys 15-16 Decathlon at the 2024 AAU Junior Olympics on July 28 in Greenville, North Carolina.
Jordyn Manbeck, Dunlap girls track and field
The senior won three events at the Mid-Illini Conference Girls Championship last Wednesday. On the Metamora track, Manbeck won the 100-meter dash (12.49 seconds) to go with victories in the 4x100-meter (49.57 seconds) and 4x200-meter (1:44.62) relays. Her other event was a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash (26.41 seconds). Those points from Manbeck helped Dunlap win the team title with 150 points.

Ethan McRaven, Dunlap boys tennis
McRaven won his pair of matches as Dunlap beat Metamora, 5-4, in a four-hour marathon match on Tuesday. He posted a 6-1, 6-4 singles victory. The senior then teamed with Alex Fei in the No. 1 doubles match, winning 6-2, 6-2. The Eagles win handed Metamora, which started 2025 at 19-0, its first dual-meet loss of the season.

Micah McCoy making a name for himself in Washington
WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — There's another player with the last name McCoy playing on the left side of the infield at Washington. But Micah McCoy isn't playing the family position of shortstop. 'I played shortstop at 8U, then shifted to thirdbase because I got a little bigger. I like third. It's more about reaction. I like to show off the arm sometimes,' McCoy said with a smile. He's showed off his arm quite a bit this season, helping the Panthers win the Mid-Illini Conference title. The Panthers will host Geneseo in a class 3A regional championship game Saturday morning. McCoy comes from a family of that loves to play bat-and-ball sports. 'Mason played shortstop, (Micah) plays third. They both have good arms,' said Washington baseball coach Kyle wisher. 'I remember watching Micah growing up when Mason was playing summer ball. He's put in a lot of hard work over the past three years. It's paid off this year.' McCoy's older sister Madi was a star softball shortstop at Washington, leading her 2015 team to a state title. She was an All-American at Illinois Central College and then went on to Bowling Green. And McCoy's older brother Mason is now in the big leagues with the San Diego Padres. Micah said he talks with his older brother usually about four or five times a week. 'Sometimes I go into the dugout after I strikeout and I send him the video. I ask, 'what am I doing wrong?' I get frustrated,' McCoy said. 'When I go hit, I can get a bunch of feedback. He helps me out a lot.' Micah will follow in his Mason's footsteps by playing at ICC next year. Then he hopes to play at a Division I school, like his brother did. Mason went to the University of Iowa for his final two years of college baseball before being selected in the sixth round of the 2017 draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Like his brother, Micah would love to eventually play pro baseball. He knows the comparisons to his oldest sibling are inevitable, but he's just trying to make a name for himself. With the help of his brother. 'I've talked to my brother about it. He helps me as much as he can,' McCoy said. 'He doesn't want to use too much leverage. He wants me to create my own path.' DALRADA Technology's chief executive has issued a statement to Morton fans as a crucial vote on the company's continued sponsorship of the club looms. In a statement published on the football club's website, Dalrada boss Brian Bonar addressed the members of Morton Club Together (MCT), the club's fan ownership group, and the side's wider fanbase. His comments come as MCT members are set to vote on whether to accept the terms of a new Dalrada sponsorship deal, which could be worth around £700,000. Metamora, Dunlap sending big numbers to state tennis championships
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — A pair of area schools are hoping to show the rest of the state the tennis in central Illinois is pretty good. Dunlap and Metamora each won sectional championships last weekend and are sending six players apiece to this week's state tennis meet. 'It's so exciting. This is what we have worked for all year, to get all six guys (to state),' said Metamora senior Adam Culp. 'It's such a great feeling to have everybody going to state.' Culp is paired with Tommy Sopko on Metamora's top doubles team heading to the state meet in suburban Chicago. They hope to hold their own against the typically-strong schools from the northern part of the state. 'Individually, we've done great. But as a team also, we were 23-2, I think,' Sopko said. 'It's always great to have good results as a team. A really successful season, I'd say.' Metamora opened the season with 19 consecutive wins and continues to ride that momentum as the season comes to an end at the state championships. Qualifying six players for the state meet is a part of that. 'The support you get from having six guys there, is something special,' said Metamora junior Dane Hutchison. 'Cheering, having them cheer for you, watching them compete at a very high level and have success, is something we can be proud of.' Dunlap's six state qualifiers include seniors Alex Fei and Ethan McRaven, who are undefeated as a doubles team this season. McRaven, who teamed with ____ to finish second at state a year ago, has enjoyed his pairing with Fei. 'He's going to hit a great ball and get me back in my groove,' McRaven said. 'This weekend I feel great about our chances. I came up just short last year. But this year I feel like I have learned a lot more, I have matured as a tennis player and I'm feeling great about our chances.' This will be Fei's fourth trip to state but in the previous three trips he was in the single's draw. 'The last three years I have been through singles, although doubles is a different type of effort,' Fei said. 'I find it easier on my body than singles.'
