Micah McCoy making a name for himself in Washington

WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — There's another player with the last name McCoy playing on the left side of the infield at Washington. But Micah McCoy isn't playing the family position of shortstop. 'I played shortstop at 8U, then shifted to thirdbase because I got a little bigger. I like third. It's more about reaction. I like to show off the arm sometimes,' McCoy said with a smile. He's showed off his arm quite a bit this season, helping the Panthers win the Mid-Illini Conference title. The Panthers will host Geneseo in a class 3A regional championship game Saturday morning. McCoy comes from a family of that loves to play bat-and-ball sports. 'Mason played shortstop, (Micah) plays third. They both have good arms,' said Washington baseball coach Kyle wisher. 'I remember watching Micah growing up when Mason was playing summer ball. He's put in a lot of hard work over the past three years. It's paid off this year.' McCoy's older sister Madi was a star softball shortstop at Washington, leading her 2015 team to a state title. She was an All-American at Illinois Central College and then went on to Bowling Green. And McCoy's older brother Mason is now in the big leagues with the San Diego Padres. Micah said he talks with his older brother usually about four or five times a week. 'Sometimes I go into the dugout after I strikeout and I send him the video. I ask, 'what am I doing wrong?' I get frustrated,' McCoy said. 'When I go hit, I can get a bunch of feedback. He helps me out a lot.' Micah will follow in his Mason's footsteps by playing at ICC next year. Then he hopes to play at a Division I school, like his brother did. Mason went to the University of Iowa for his final two years of college baseball before being selected in the sixth round of the 2017 draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Like his brother, Micah would love to eventually play pro baseball. He knows the comparisons to his oldest sibling are inevitable, but he's just trying to make a name for himself. With the help of his brother. 'I've talked to my brother about it. He helps me as much as he can,' McCoy said. 'He doesn't want to use too much leverage. He wants me to create my own path.' Jenna Flessner a glue to Washington's softball success

WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Nothing seems to be stopping Jenna Flessner these days. Not even a bloody pitching hand, which didn't stop her from beating Metamora last week. 'It wouldn't stop bleeding,' said the Washington pitcher. 'We tried tape, glue, it didn't stay. Finally, it worked. We got it under control.' Flessner has been under control as the Panther's leader with her bat and her pitching arm. Perhaps it's fitting that a player who needed some medical glue to stop bleeding on her thumb has also been the glue to a team that's state ranked and in the hunt for a conference title. She says her team has stuck together since the deaths of the father and grandfather of teammate Bayley Parrott. Both men were killed in an auto accident while in Tennessee to watch the Panthers play in an early-season tournament. 'Having to go through something so hard in the beginning with Bayley's dad, it has brought us together so much,' Flessner said. 'Everyone has picked each other up. Our team chemistry is so good.' The Panthers are off to a 25-2 start. They are 11-1 in the Mid-Illini Conference just a half-game behind leader Dunlap (11-0). Washington coach Stephanie Lawson has seen Flessner grow into her role as a positive influence on this team. 'That's contagious for everyone else. We always say 'lead by example.' We need leaders as well,' said Lawson. 'She's one of the one's as a senior that has made an impact.' Flessner has always been able to hit but this is her first season as Washington's top pitcher. She says she's eager to stay in that role as the staff ace, hoping to lead the Panthers to a conference title. Banged-up thumb or not. 'It's been great. I've enjoyed being the pitcher, knowing that they are all there for me is so great. I'm there for my team. It's a vital position,' said Flessner. 'I'm giving it my all, 100 percent. It's been great.' Washington enters postseason with 30-1 record, No. 1 ranking and momentum

WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Momentum can be a fleeting thing. But it appears the Washington girls basketball team has it after beating Morton in the regular season finale to clinch the Mid-Illini Conference title on Tuesday. 'It's really momentum for us going into postseason with this Mid-Illini Conference championship,' said junior guard Avery Tibbs. 'It feels really good and it's a boost of momentum for us.' Tibbs scored 19 points as Washington rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to shoot past the Potters, 67-50. The Panthers hit seven of their nine three-pointers in the second half against Bob Becker's Potters. 'I think this is a huge step in the right direction,' said Washington coach Kim Barth. 'Morton is a great program. I'll always give (Becker) credit. It's a well-coached, disciplined team. For us to make a run like that in the second half, means good things are coming.' Washington (30-1, 13-1) avenged its loss of the season with the win. The Panthers are ranked No. 1 in the state in class 3A with the Illinois High School Association postseason starting this weekend. 'Obviously, it feels good but honestly now we are 0-0,' said junior Becca McDougall. 'On any day it be any (opponent's) game. We just have to keep being us. And do our thing.' The Panthers host a regional next week and begin play on Monday. 'The next game is the next game. We are not going to focus on this game for our next one,' junior Dani Guedet said after scoring 16 points in the win at Morton. 'Our next game is a completely new (season).'
