Metamora, Dunlap sending big numbers to state tennis championships
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — A pair of area schools are hoping to show the rest of the state the tennis in central Illinois is pretty good. Dunlap and Metamora each won sectional championships last weekend and are sending six players apiece to this week's state tennis meet. 'It's so exciting. This is what we have worked for all year, to get all six guys (to state),' said Metamora senior Adam Culp. 'It's such a great feeling to have everybody going to state.' Culp is paired with Tommy Sopko on Metamora's top doubles team heading to the state meet in suburban Chicago. They hope to hold their own against the typically-strong schools from the northern part of the state. 'Individually, we've done great. But as a team also, we were 23-2, I think,' Sopko said. 'It's always great to have good results as a team. A really successful season, I'd say.' Metamora opened the season with 19 consecutive wins and continues to ride that momentum as the season comes to an end at the state championships. Qualifying six players for the state meet is a part of that. 'The support you get from having six guys there, is something special,' said Metamora junior Dane Hutchison. 'Cheering, having them cheer for you, watching them compete at a very high level and have success, is something we can be proud of.' Dunlap's six state qualifiers include seniors Alex Fei and Ethan McRaven, who are undefeated as a doubles team this season. McRaven, who teamed with ____ to finish second at state a year ago, has enjoyed his pairing with Fei. 'He's going to hit a great ball and get me back in my groove,' McRaven said. 'This weekend I feel great about our chances. I came up just short last year. But this year I feel like I have learned a lot more, I have matured as a tennis player and I'm feeling great about our chances.' This will be Fei's fourth trip to state but in the previous three trips he was in the single's draw. 'The last three years I have been through singles, although doubles is a different type of effort,' Fei said. 'I find it easier on my body than singles.' The state meet runs Thursday through Saturday at Palatine High School. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Washington softball player supported by friends and family
WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — Washington Community High School softball player Baylee Parrott suffered the loss of two family members in a car crash late last month in Tennessee, and those close to her are trying to help her through this difficult time. On Tuesday, Parrott family members and family friends gathered at Plaza Lanes, handing out shirts with Baylee's name and number on the back, before traveling to the game against Metamora to cheer her on. Bob Baker is a family friend who went bowling with several members of the Parrott family and helped set up the event. He said the event was coordinated last week. 'We put it on Facebook in a private group, and we had roughly 70 or 80 people wanting shirts. We've ended up selling 60 of them (so far). It's not a fundraiser. We just want to support Baylee and the Parrott family. That's what it's all about,' he said. Washington ended up winning the game over Metamora by a 6-4 score. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Senior Jonah Funk proving he can be a difference-making player at Metamora
METAMORA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — He has been motivated to prove people wrong all season. Since he transferred from small-school El Paso-Gridley to big-school Metamora this fall, Jonah Funk says he heard the doubters. 'They say 'he didn't dominate at 2A, how will he dominate at 3A?' I've exceeded theseexpectations,' Funk said. 'And I think my coaches and teammates would agree with that. I'm having so much fun.' The 6-9 senior center moved to Metamora in October. That means he didn't have the benefit of playing with his new team during the summer. He started playing in Metamora's open gyms in the fall so he didn't have much of a preseason with the Redbirds. Funk admits the first few weeks of the season were rough. 'Learning sets was hard at first, even during the season, I was messing plays up,' said Funk. 'But the teammates I have are phenomenal. They would help me out during games.' Now Funk believes he's playing his best basketball of the season and perhaps the best in his high school career. 'You're really seeing him play his best basketball. He is really comfortable now,' said Metamora head coach Justin Dehm. 'It was a slow process in the first month or two, having to learn new things. Now I think he's more confident and learning really well.' Funk helped lead Metamora to a fourth straight Mid-Illini Conference championship. Now he's confident he can make a difference for his team as it enters the postseason. The Redbirds play Dunlap on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Dunlap Regional semifinals. 'I'm excited for the postseason. I've got one last hurrah to go do it,' said Funk. 'I haveseniors with me and they want to win as desperately as I want to win.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
