Drivers urged to be aware of pedestrians and cyclists over Bank Holiday Weekend
'We don't want to have to call to anybody's door to deliver bad news over the course of this weekend' Gardai have issued a special appeal for drivers to be 'particularly mindful of the risks associated with vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists' over the Bank Holiday Weekend. They are urging everyone to stay safe as bank holidays are the busiest periods on Irish roads. In a fresh appeal posted across social media platforms this afternoon, Chief Superintendent, Roads Policing, David Harrington, asked all road users 'to pay additional care and attention to how they use our road networks'. Gardaí had carried out a major roads policing operation nationwide from the morning of Thursday, May 1 until Tuesday, May 6, in a bid to improve road safety. During the operation gardaí carried out more than 1,000 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints, which resulted in over 13,000 breath tests and around 280 oral fluid tests. A total of 187 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. More than 3,000 drivers were clocked driving above the legal speed limit. Gardaí issued hundreds of Fixed Charge Notices for additional road safety offences, including over 270 for using mobile phones while driving, more than 340 for unaccompanied learner drivers, and 115 for not wearing seatbelts. In total, 147 vehicles were seized from learner drivers who were driving unaccompanied, while 444 vehicles were taken off the road for having no tax or insurance.

Two people lost their lives and six others were left with life-threatening injuries over the May bank holiday weekend, as gardaí carried out a major roads policing operation nationwide. The extensive operation, which ran from 7am on Thursday, May 1 until 7am on Tuesday, May 6, aimed to improve road safety during one of the busiest weekends of the year. During the enforcement blitz, gardaí carried out more than 1,000 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints, resulting in over 13,000 breath tests and around 280 oral fluid tests. A total of 187 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Speeding was also widespread, with more than 3,000 drivers clocked above the legal limit. Driver caught doing 151km/h in County Sligo over Bank Holiday week-end
Over 3,000 drivers were detected exceeding speed limits throughout the weekend. An extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation was in place from 7am on Thursday, 1st May, until 7am on Tuesday, 6th May 2025, to ensure road safety during the Bank Holiday weekend. During this period, there were two fatalities on the roads, while six serious collisions resulted in six individuals sustaining severe and life-threatening injuries. Over the course of the operation, An Garda Síochána conducted more than 1,000 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints. More than 13,000 breath tests and approximately 280 oral fluid tests were carried out, leading to 187 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Fixed Charge Notices issued for other road offences during this period included: • Using Mobile Phones – over 270 • Unaccompanied learner drivers – over 340 • No seatbelts – 115 In addition: • 147 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied • 444 vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance. An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road.

Driver doing 179kph in 60kph zone is just one of more than 2,800 caught speeding over the weekend

Gardai have released details of the worst offenders clocked over the course of their roads policing operation that kicked off on Thursday morning. Other drivers topping the speeding list included the one who was travelling at 165kph on a 100kph stretch of the N18 Ballinacurra (Weston), Co Limerick. Another was busted while driving at 139kph in a 80kph zone on R157 Dunboyne, Co Meath, while one driver was spotted breaking the 50kh speed limit on the R394 Milltown Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath by going at 125kph. Between 7am on Thursday, April 17 until 7am on Tuesday, April 22, gardai carried out more than 912 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints. Over 4,500 breath tests and 213 oral fluid tests were performed which led to 149 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Fixed Charge Offences for other road offences over the four days included 22 for mobile phone use, more than 160 unaccompanied learner drivers and 73 for not wearing. Seatbelt. In addition, 109 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied while 438 vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance There were also three fatalities during the same period and 11 serious collisions that resulted in 12 people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries. One young boy died after being struck by a car in Mullingar, Co Westmeath shortly after 6.30pm on Monday in Farranshock Estate, Mullingar. He was treated at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Mullingar Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The Coroner has been notified, and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The scene is currently preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward. In a separate collision in Sligo, a nine-year-old boy, a three-year-old girl and two women were seriously injured in a crash. The incident was followed by a separate collision in Co Limerick in which a motorcyclist, aged in his 20s, died. A fourth collision took place in Co Kilkenny on Sunday in which another man, aged in his 30s, suffered serious injuries following a collision involving a car and a motorcycle. Gardaí were called to the scene of the collision in Co Sligo on Monday between two cars on the N59 in Ballysadare in Sligo around 2.30pm. Two women, one aged in her 40s and the other in her 20s, and the two children were brought to Sligo University Hospital with serious injuries. The driver and sole occupant of the second car, a woman in her 50s, was brought to the hospital for assessment. In Co Limerick a man, aged in his 20s, died following a collision between a motorcycle and a car. The incident took place in Ardagh village at the intersection of the R521 and R523. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was removed to University Hospital Limerick where a postmortem will take place. The male driver of the car was brought to University Hospital Kerry for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the incident in Kilkenny took place around 12.40pm on Sunday afternoon on the R448 at Knockwilliam. The motorcyclist involved in the collision, a man in his 30s, was taken to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where he remains in serious condition. No injuries were reported as a result of the collision. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
