How stylists are designing for the Met Gala theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style"
No Met Gala look is complete without the makeup! No Met Gala look is complete without the makeup! No Met Gala look is complete without the makeup! The Met Gala, the biggest night in fashion, is finally here. The hottest names in Hollywood are set to attend the fundraiser Monday night in New York City, and this year's theme is "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," with the accompanying dress code "Tailored for You." "It's really the one night that we really get to dive deep into fashion and go big," celebrity stylist Alexandra Mandelkorn said. "I think there's many other red carpets that are very elegant, sophisticated, chic, but with the Met Gala, you really get to let your creativity fly and you see things you wouldn't see anywhere else." Mandelkorn said this year's theme is rooted in Black creativity. So what looks does she expect to see? "I think there's going to be a lot of hybrid suiting, a lot of details that we see on traditional tailoring - lapels, cuffs, buttons, pocket watches, all these types of things. And I think color, and prints, and that really flamboyant side of dandyism," Mandelkorn said. She praised the work of designer Sergio Hudson. "Every collection, every season, he is bringing some sort of element of tailoring and dandyism into his work," Mandelkorn said. "It's the pinnacle of style" It's the 12th Met Gala for makeup artist Vincent Oquendo. "My favorite part is collaborating with my talent, the people that I'm creating the look on. It can be a sort of high energy, high nerves situation, and so I really lean into the collaboration, because I want them to feel like they're really a part of it," Oquendo said. He said he started creating mood boards a month ago. "When I think of 'Tailoring Black Style,' I just think of those crisp suits and that really cool, like, Big Daddy Kane, hip hop energy," Oquendo said. "For me, it's the pinnacle of style." Oquendo said his preparations this year spanned a wide range of references. "I'm leaning into some Victorian-era references, I'm leaning into Josephine Baker, Harlem Renaissance, that kind of stuff, and I'm blending the masculine energy and the feminine energy. I think it's not just all one reference. I think you've sort of got to tap into a few things and think of your client," Oquendo said.

Old Hollywood glamour, classic looks expected on Oscars red carpet
LOS ANGELES, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Celebrity stylist Alexandra Mandelkorn lines up pairs of towering heels before flicking through a rack of dazzling dresses. Metallics and sparkling sequins have often been seen on the red carpets this awards season as have structural pieces, says Mandelkorn, who will be dressing clients including "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" star Rachel Brosnahan and "Wicked" actress Marissa Bode for Oscar parties this weekend. "The trend that I've been seeing that is a little different than just colors or textures is these really sculptural dresses," she said. "Like really interesting kind of sculptural necklines and just the things that feel a little bit more avant-garde than your normal gown." Oscar nominees Cynthia Erivo and Zoe Saldana as well as "The Piano Lesson" actress Danielle Deadwyler have all worn such gowns, while Selena Gomez and Demi Moore, who many expect to win the best actress Oscar, have been seen in sparkling dresses. All eyes will be on them on Sunday at the Oscars, Hollywood's biggest red carpet and perhaps its most formal. "Old Hollywood glamour is really what I think of when I think of Oscar dressing, like ball gown skirts. There is a simplicity to it, but also with the glam, the hair, the makeup kind of just feeling timeless," Mandelkorn said. " Zendaya, opens new tab wore that beautiful Louis Vuitton burnt orangey color satin gown (at the Golden Globes) that was just like a timeless silhouette and with the hair and makeup, it just felt very award season." For the men, Esquire UK's Style Director Johnny Davis spotlighted Oscar contenders Colman Domingo and Adrien Brody for their distinctive outfits this awards season. "Adrien Brody... wears essentially the same thing, which is a classic black tux... He looks good, immaculately styled," he said. Domingo "just looks great, sort of very flamboyant," he added. He said stylistic choices made by celebrities nodded to both old and new Hollywood styles, while brooches on lapels and necklaces were among the stand-out accessories. For Sunday, Davis said he expected classic looks. "Because of the terrible fires there recently, I think potentially wearing something that's kind of shouty and loud is maybe not the way to go and going kind of classic for me would be what to expect," he said.
