This NC grocery store just announced 2 new locations in the Triangle

A North Carolina-based grocer will open two new locations in the Triangle. Lowes Foods, which is headquartered in Winston-Salem, is expanding to Wendell and Fuquay-Varina. This follows the closures of multiple Lowes Foods stores as part of the grocer's parent company's 'broader growth strategy to invest in new stores and remodel existing stores.' While the grocer has not announced anticipated opening dates for the new stores, it provided their locations. Wendell: The new store will be in the Wendell Commons development at the intersection of Wendell Falls Parkway and Eagle Rock Road. Barnett Properties is the developer behind the project, which will include 90,000 square feet when complete, Alan Maness, a vice president of development, told The News & Observer in an email. The Lowes Foods is expected to open in 2026, though the schedule has not been finalized, Maness said. Fuquay-Varina: The store will be in the mixed-use Academy Village development at Old Honeycutt Road and Purfoy Road. Shelly Johnson, the director of marketing for Academy Village developer MPV Properties, told The News & Observer in an email that the Lowes Foods building is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2027, pointing to a late 2027 store opening. Academy Village will feature 85,000 square feet of commercial space, 300 apartment units and 54 townhomes, with Proffitt Dixon overseeing the residential component. Nearby grocers include Harris Teeter and Aldi. Lowes Foods has more than a dozen stores in the Triangle, across Raleigh, Garner, Cary, Knightdale, Holly Springs, Apex, Clayton, Wake Forest, Chapel Hill and Pittsboro. The Holly Springs store at 112 Bass Lake Road is being remodeled and will reopen Thursday, June 26. 'Our remodeling efforts are focused on enriching the everyday shopping experience,' Tim Lowe, the president of Lowes Foods, said in a news release. 'We want guests to feel at home in our stores and to discover something new each time they visit. Whether it's through new store openings or reimagined spaces, we are committed to offering an engaging grocery destination that reflects the spirit of each community.' The grocer also announced that the Kj's Market in John's Island, South Carolina, will be converted into a Lowes Foods. The grocer has closed multiple North Carolina locations over the past year. Its store at 8201 Rowlock Way in northwest Raleigh shut down last year, along with a Lowes Foods location in Wilmington and a Kj's Market in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Earlier this year, Lowes Foods closed its Cary store at 930 High House Road. The location at 6430 Tryon Road in Cary remains open. Have a question about your community you'd like answered? Meet the four new administrative leaders for Pitt County Schools

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — Four people have been appointed to administrative leadership positions within the Pitt County School System. Dr. Jennifer James has been hired as the new PCS Director of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction. This role has been redesigned to better ensure quality education. Dr. James was an award winning leader at Innovation Early College High School since the school opened in August of 2018. She was selected as the Pitt County Schools Principal of the Year in 2023 and has been an educator for 19 years, 12 of which she served as a principal. 'I am grateful for the opportunity to serve Pitt County Schools in this new role,' Dr. James said. 'I look forward to working with senior leadership, our curriculum specialist and instructional coaches on strengthening the academic programs in our district. A strong foundation has already been laid, and I am looking forward to collaborating with others to realize our shared vision of inspiring and motivating all learners. Leaving Innovation Early College High School is bittersweet. The journey with the IECHS team has been incredibly rewarding, and I am proud of all we have accomplished together over the past seven years.' Dr. Kirby Maness will serve as the new principal of Ayden-Grifton High School. Dr. Maness has been Ridgewood Elementary School's principal since January of 2023 and started at the school as an assistant principal in 2020. He helped the elementary school become the first in Pitt County to receive a Model Professional Learning Communities at Work School prestigious designation. 'I am excited to join the Charger family and partner with students, staff, families, and the greater Ayden-Grifton community,' Dr. Maness said. 'This school has a rich tradition, and I look forward to working together to elevate every student's opportunity to lead, grow, and succeed. I want to thank Dr. Lassiter for the opportunity to serve in this role and to lead such a remarkable school community. I am also deeply grateful to the students, staff, and families of Ridgewood Elementary School for the incredible journey we shared.' Casey Hyatt will be the new principal for Innovation Early College High School. Hyatt previously served as the principal for Ayden-Grifton High School where she started in January of 2023. She won the Pitt County Schools Assistant Principal of the Year award in 2022 and has worked as an educator for 12 years. 'I'm honored to join Innovation Early College High School as principal and excited to lead a community where academic excellence and innovation drive student success,' Hyatt said. 'I'm deeply grateful to Dr. James for her exceptional leadership and the strong foundation she leaves behind. Building on that legacy, I look forward to fostering innovation, accelerating achievement, and empowering every student to grow as a confident learner and future leader. Alison Covington will be Farmville's Sugg-Bundy Elementary School's new principal. She spent the last eight years in leadership roles at Belvoir and South Greenville. Covington won the Pitt County Schools and Wells Fargo Northeast Region Principal of the Year in 2022. She has been an educator for 20 years and has also spent time working with Falkland Elementary as an assistant principal. 'While I will deeply miss the amazing team at South Greenville Elementary, I am excited to begin this new chapter at Sugg-Bundy,' Covington said. 'It's an honor to join a school community with such a strong sense of purpose and commitment to students. I'm looking forward to working alongside all students and staff, learning from what's already been accomplished, and growing together. I'm excited for all we'll achieve!' Tariffs impacting local flower shops ahead of Mother's Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Mother's Day is right around the corner (Sunday, May 11, if you forgot) and if you're looking to get a special mom some flowers, you might notice a wilt in your wallet. Most of the flower shops in Springfield have items imported from other countries, whether that's the soil or actual cut flowers. Because the bulk of the blooms are coming from overseas, you might notice a difference in your Mother's Day bouquets. 'They definitely have increased prices,' said Rcena Maness, a manager at Flowerama in Springfield. 'However, we knew that was going to happen.' The new tariffs put in place over the last few months have started to impact local flower shops. Maness said their prices have changed since the tariffs went into effect. 'They have gone up slightly,' Maness said. 'However, it's just leaving out a stem here and there. We can still do that $30 bouquet and still just as beautiful. Just maybe you get a little bit less than you did a couple of months ago.' Flowerama's cut flowers are not grown locally, they are imported primarily out of South America. However, the greenery that fills the rest of the bouquet comes from Florida. 80% of flowers consumed in the United States are grown elsewhere. Last year the U.S. imported $2.2 billion worth of cut flowers and greens, the bulk of it from South America. 'The fact that they can grow year-round gave them a natural advantage,' said Kate Penn, the CEO of the Society of American Florists. Penn says local, small growers have flourished since the pandemic. 'The consumer does want to buy local,' Penn said. To help ease the costs, Maness tells Ozarks First they prepared as much as they could before the tariffs were put in place, stocking up on items like vases. 'We did prep a little bit ahead of time with some hard goods and things that came from other countries,' Maness said. Maness says if you want to plan ahead to beat the rush of everyone trying to buy flowers over the weekend, their flowers do have a four-day guarantee. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Authorities in Southeast Kansas investigate multiple weather-related crashes

ALLEN COUNTY, Kan. — Multiple weather-related crashes are being evaluated by Allen County authorities. According to a press release, the Allen County Sheriff's Office is in the process of investigating two crashes, that sent one person to the hospital. Emergency crews responded to a one-vehicle rollover at 6:00 a.m. on February 5, south of Iola on Old U.S. Highway 169. The vehicle, a 2000 Jeep Wrangler, overturned after the vehicle lost traction on the icy bridge. The driver of the Jeep, a 28-year-old, told first responders his seat belt might have just saved his life. Less than two hours later (shortly after 7:30 a.m.), crews responded to another crash on the Highway 169 overpass at the Highway 54 junction. A collision between two vehicles, a Ford Explorer and a Nissan Altima, resulted in what you see in the image above. The driver of the Ford Explorer lost control as they crossed the bridge and veered into oncoming traffic. The driver of the Nissan Altima struck the Explorer. Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to remove the driver of the Altima. That driver, who only received minor injuries, was also wearing a seatbelt. Allen County officials say EMS transported the driver of the Explorer to a local hospital with unknown injuries. Related: Mechanics share winter driving advice for slick roads Allen County Sheriff Anthony Maness, reminds drivers to always be cautious, especially on elevated roadways and bridges. When temperatures are around freezing, and wet, bridges always freeze first. Maness says he again saw 'first-hand the effectiveness of seatbelts and airbags in reducing injuries and saving lives.' You might remember some of the icy conditions we received in January. A reminder that being cautious in dangerous conditions can both save lives and keep emergency crews available for response.
