UMC chief assures pothole-free Ulhasnagar before Ganesh festival with modern mastick asphalt technology

ULHASNAGAR: Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) has begun an extensive pothole-filling drive ahead of the Ganesh festival, using modern mastick asphalt technology to ensure durable repairs and smoother roads for citizens. UMC Commissioner Manisha Awhale announced that all major potholes across the city will be repaired before the festival. 'This year, we are using advanced mastick asphalt technology that offers long-lasting results. Our priority is to complete the work quickly so devotees and visitors do not face inconvenience during the celebrations,' she said. To ensure quality, accountability, and transparency, Awhale said contractors have been made responsible for the work for three years, meaning no pothole should reappear in the repaired spot during that period or else contactor will repair the same. She also pointed out that this year's pothole repair budget is ₹2.35 crore, significantly lower than the ₹4 crore spent last year, while still maintaining higher quality standards. The UMC said the repair process involves heating asphalt to 200 degrees, applying it in layers, and compacting it to create a water-proof surface. This method allows roads to reopen within hours and provides more resilience compared to traditional repairs. The work is currently underway across Ward Committees 1 to 4, covering roads such as Dadabhai Kamal Patrawala Marg, Sidhhi Vinayak Nagar, Chopa Court, Gol Maidan, and near Chhatrapati Shahumaharaj Udaan Bridge. The initiative follows weeks of public anger over deteriorating roads and political criticism aimed at the civic body. Large craters had developed across main cement roads during the monsoon, causing severe inconvenience to commuters. BJP MLA Kumar Ailani recently accused the commissioner of inaction, stating that despite his repeated requests, potholes were left unrepaired. He has issued an ultimatum for the work to be completed by August 17, warning that he would lead a protest outside the UMC office if the deadline was missed. Commissioner Awhale have deployed multiple teams and machinery to speed up repairs. They have assured that the majority of the work will be completed well before the festival begins.
