Man and woman charged with manslaughter in death of infant in northern Ont.

Police previously announced the arrest of 2 people in an infant death in Wiikwemkoong in May of this year – but the incident was from 2023. Two people have been charged in connection with the death of an infant in Wikwemikong First Nation in May. Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service began the investigation May 8, 2023, when an infant was brought to hospital. The OPP was asked to help with the case May 15. 'Assistance was provided under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch, with support from the Manitoulin OPP detachment,' police said in a news release Tuesday. 'The infant was pronounced deceased on May 16, 2023.' Two people from Wikwemikong – a 33-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man – have been arrested in connection with the case. Both are charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessaries of life. One of the accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Wikwemikong on Sept. 3. The other accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Wikwemikong on Aug. 27 for a bail hearing. Ontario Provincial Police have released no other details about the case and say a publication ban has been issued, preventing them from providing any more information. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online.
